Well my view AD but it appears what you alluded to is true from yourself?

...but it seems dissent is not to be allowed... smile

I don't know if children returning to schools have contributed to this significant increase in numbers, but I would suspect so.

Just out of interest I'm hearing from a number of friends still at the chalk face that many students in their bubble classes are being sent home to self isolate together sometimes with their teachers when one tests positive, and in some schools the situation is getting critical.

In my wife's school there were 10% of the children being sent home and 15 supply teachers in on one day, 5 or more being the norm. It is projected that at the end of the year most students will have missed out on some part of their year and the topics covered.

As they say it is not teaching as we know it, the students stay in one room or bubble, teachers teach from the front in their 'zone', no approaching students to help out, no marking of books, and hence no real checking of learning.

Because of all of the above It is being rumoured that centre assessed grades will be used again for exams in 2021.

I tend to agree with you Corners, I think the re opening of Education for all ages is undoubtably having an impact in different ways. The demand for testing has rocketed for young children, primary aged. In a normal year, we are the only couple in our family that doesn’t have regular or ongoing contact with young children, (ie we don’t have grandchildren, we don’t care for grandchildren to help out). We seldom get colds, cough’s, sore throats, stomach upsets, yet our siblings seem always to have something over Winter. Some of them still work as well, so pick up bugs doing the rounds there. I think it’s the household mixing that is driving up cases in most instances, unavoidable of course in some circumstances. We have a good number of teachers in our family, across the age range from nursery to sixth form, and they are having to be very careful interacting with their own family units.

It’s an difficult scenario for all concerned really. 😕

Two teachers from seperate schools who are also on our dog walk routes have said they have been advised that half term is possibly being extended to two weeks.   to cover for a national two week complete lockdown. unless the situation deteriorated and it is brought in earliersurprised

I read on the BBC webpage the other day that over 200,000 under 9s were tested for the virus in the first 2 weeks of September (three times as many in the previous 2 weeks) and only 1% tested positive.

Would appear that seasonal colds and other bugs are triggering a lot of this increase in demand for testing.

Some of the rules seem crazy. We here are not in lockdown with a 11  per 100,000 statistic number. We are told only to make necessary journeys. However anyone from a lockdown area with say 160 per 100,000 statistic can come on holidays with a great risk of importing the virus. Crazy or not?

I think you may be confusing those numbers with probabilities? They are not. The latest figures I can find is that the probability of catching covid is 0.001.

I haven't found anything to even suggest that anyone from a higher rate per 100,000 area will have a greater probability of infecting anyone in a lower rate area, it looks as if it should but it is far more complicated than that.

I think it's primarily being used as a guide to assessing measures to protect the UK population, David. Holidays, home or away, are not a priority compared with the health of the nation.

Firstly they are not my 'theories' David that I have thought up on a whim tonight, they are the established theories of probability. (Anyway you appear to make the usual error that a theory is an untested idea, where as in science and maths a theory means the opposite, it is a tested explanation that fits what happens in the 'real world'. Of course apologies if you didn't mean that.

The rates are indeed used as you say to control the spread but Fish's post was about the greater risk, risk implies probability, quote: great risk of importing the virus. One cannot say that the risk is great just because someone travels from a higher rate area to another. There is a risk but great?

I used to use a similar opening discussion when teaching exponentials.

I used to say what would people like, I'll give you a ten pounds every day for a month, or a penny on the first day, then two pence, on the second day, then four pence on the next day, then 8 pence and so on for that month, which do you want?

Of course they would do the calculations in their heads for one week and everyone goes for the the £10 pound a day. They would be shocked to see the amount the other way and how powerful exponents are?

There is a saying going round with maths teachers at the moment, we don't get the when are we going to use exponentials in real life comments any more sadly.

There’s an obvious flaw in statistics there.........comparing the rate of a country of x million, with a rate of an area of 🤷‍♀️. It’s certainly not an exact science.

people are knocking the measures put in place in the UK to combat this virus, but look around you folks, Marseille, second largest city in France, all bars clubs etc forced to close indefinetly, as a result of covid-19, Madrid, troops on the streets enforcing lock down, several ski resorts now cancelling their ski seasons.

I have just returned from 28 days on a site in Devon and very enjoyable it was, facilities blocks were not brilliant but adequate if you took some of your own precautions. Every sink had hand wash and hand lotion, every shower had a large bottle of sanitiser, block cleaned twice per day, entry was contolled by wrist bands, yes site is comparitively small compared to some club sites, but they had 3 x couples as wardens working a shift rota, which included on site small shop and reception, and several cleaners for facilities block and glamping pods.

On site swimming pool was restricted to 15 people, which i thought was too many, but most evenings only a couple of people swimming so was not a problem, children are the danger, fearless, and the very young do not understand social distancing, and being a child friendly person it is horrible when you have to tell them to stay away.

Site is privately owned, but does let, i think 6 statics to Hoseasons

Most areas we visited in Devon and Cornwall we felt perfectly safe in, a few such as Tintagel. we visted for 1 hour and left never to return, now that was covid madness of the worst possible sort.

Bude surprisingly was the area we felt most safe in, the swimming pool is fantastic and very safe, well it is 93 meters long and gets a fresh supply of sea water daily, and of course you could walk on Dartmoor well away from human beings, just got to control the dog as many sheep and cows around.

Would i go again, booked same month for next year, just in case overseas travel proves difficult, and i suspect covid madness will still be with us.

The restrictions that are being put in place through out the UK at the moment (it seems caused by those who still think they are inmune),are far less severe than in other responsible countries

As the professor from Edinborough University said on Sunday,no one in the infected countries ,really know how to contain this virus, until all the populations come to realise until a vaccine is available they are all in danger of catching it in some form or other

‘Who still think they are immune’ tbh JV that’s the whole truth-they are mostly immune being asymptomatic keeps them in the dark re virus, they are just vessels/carriers who then go on to infect others not so young🤷🏻‍♂️.

I will post this link here, rather than anywhere else, as this is probably more the “Covid” thread at the moment. Insight into the earlier attempts to set up Track and Trace. Fingers crossed this new attempt works more efficiently🤞
