Visited Saltholme RSPB reserve today.
Nothing spectacular around although we did spend a good 20 minutes or so watching hawking hirundines over the edge of a pond and meadow. All 4 of the normal species on show with at least 6 Swifts, Sand and House Martins and Swallows.

A fleeting glimpse of a kingfisher on the River Chelmer yesterday. They always seem to quick to get a pic. Snapping the dragonflies was bad enough.

Had a stroll round East Wretham Heath NWT reserve this morning and saw lots of these doughnut sized fungi. Growing in the short, rough grass typical of the reserve. Can anyone identify them please, my fungus identification book is at home. 🙂

Plenty of them about, Pliers. I too have picture or three of them. At least they don't move as one is taking one's phono!!😁

Had a wonderful walk along the coast of the Firth of Forth on a balmy day.
Rafts of Eider along with about 30 remaining Sandwich Terns with quite a few youngsters, Curlews, Sanderlings, Turnstones, 2 Red Throated Divers, a flock of 16 Red Breasted Mergansers flying in at the same time, a Whinchat on the dunes and to cap the day our first sighting this autumn of incoming Pink Footed Geese, a skein of about 50 heading in from the North Sea in late afternoon. Magic.

We had toads sleeping in our trainers, left under the ‘van, at Thetford Forest site, last week. Had to rescue them every morning.
And another fungus photo from me, taken this morning at Titchwell RSPB reserve. Think it’s an ink cap ....🤔

Had a heron swimming in the Great Ouse opposite the MH yesterday morning. By the time I'd grabbed the camera he'd relocated to the far bank and adopted the customary pose. Annoyed that I missed a water-borne shot.

They even reached the Wirral last year with a few overwintering on the fields at Burton RSPB site. They certainly live up to their name.
Edit - Brue, you're not getting your Cattle confused with Little ard you as Cattle Egrets do seem to be fairly new arrivals?

Great spotting, WN. We too bad a large skien passing overhead yesterday, although they were heading South East which seemed strange to me at this time of the year.

Sitting on the sea wall by Blackness Castle watching a few waders whilst having our butties during a bike ride was fortuitous. The tide was on the way in.
Curlew Sandpiper, Little Stint and a Spotted Redshank seen amongst the general waders. Within 20 minutes they were all gone as was the shoreline.

They have been around for a few years now. They are very numerous on the Somerset Levels. If anyone is in the area, They can be found in groups up to one hundred around Catcott Lows, Ham Wall etc. I visited Ham Wall last winter and there were at a rough estimate around 100 in the field next to the car park. Definitely worth a winter visit.

I obviously had a mental aberration last night!! Of course the geese that I saw were heading South to their wintering habitats, perhaps Martinmere. More skiens passed overhead this morning too.

Spotted a water vole rummaging around in front of my MH this morning but upon being disturbed by a dog walker, it disappeared rapidly into the long grass by the river. A rewarding end to our sojourn at St Neots C&CC site.

More Divers on the sea. Both Red Throated and Black Throated variety, the black still showing a bit of its summer plummage.
Impressive seeing the mind blowing numbers of Gannets still on and around Bass Rock, apparently there until the end of October.

We spent a lovely day at Walberswick while staying on Suffolk a week ago, however after seeing this Adder we kept the dog on a very short lead.
It is only the second time I have seen one and it didn't seem unduly worried by us.

Very early start from Sandringham Club site this morning to get to Snettisham RSPB reserve in good time for the 8am high tide.
Certainly worth the effort, thousands of waders flew over our heads, on to the reserve’s lakes, forming mosh pits of birds trying to get their spots on the shingle banks and islands. Then, an hour or so later, flew back onto the shoreline. Pure magic !
Then, just to make the morning a bit better, the resident white tailed eagle did a couple of reps over the admiring crowd.
And a crowd there certainly was. Didn’t bother with the hides, they were absolutely packed with people, many with very impressive looking cameras and sound recording gear. You could see the spectacle just as well from the footpath. I took a couple of phone photos, will try to post one.

Just checking out links to Snettisham reserve and spotted this photo of myself and OH enjoying the wader movement this morning. It was taken by Les Bunyan, a chap I’ve known for years, sorry I didn’t spot him, and he obviously didn’t recognise us. ( all birders look the same at 8am!)
And, yes, it really was that good 🙂🙂🙂

After spotting 3 young Goosanders twice on different stretches of the R Mint, today we saw at least 7 together just down stream from the Cowan Head Mill.
