2021 Where to Go?

Last week we met up with our holiday buddies and reluctantly agreed that a trip abroad this year was not likely.

It has though been a lot more positive since when considering what we may do in 2021 and there are two/three destinations in mind and a variety of ferry and route options.

The destinations are Spain, possibly going via Portugal, and Italy leaving in May and returning at the end of June-this gives good ACSI availability and gets us home for a family event.

If its Spain looking at somewhere like Marjal Guardamar then heading North to Alcossebre, Haro and Play Joyel.

As said we may head for Portugal, Lagos, to start with and then head on as above.

If its Italy our destination will be Lake Trasimeno but the routes to there could be via France, from Roscoff, via Hook of Holland or points in between, but most likely the Hook so we can visit friends near Arnhem-which also allows for a visit to Obelinks huge store.

We would like to visit one or two of the Romantic Road sites but not sure if we should drive it or just head for the Southern part, around Fussen, and day trip from there. We then use the Fern Pass, head for Camping Natterersee and onward to the Brenner Pass..

I have checked the Bavarian school holiday dates, and will try to avoid those as I presume it will be very busy-we have met the massed ranks of German campers in the lakes before and the problems of finding decent pitches are now perhaps second  place to being somewhere you feel you cannot be reasonably safe-but I am presuming that it will be quieter around Trasimeno than Garda.

I have searched CT for info, and looked at DKs and ADs sites, but would welcome any initial thoughts and suggestions.

I know its a long way off, and who knows what the situation will be like then, but is far more pleasant to plan in hope than just think about what we are not going to do now.

Thanks.

We have a trip arranged for Italy via Germany in Sep just a few weeks now.  It is now looking unlikely that we will be able to go as I am pretty sure that the FCO advice for France will change shortlycry.  If still ok to go on 1 Sep we will as we would be passing straight through with just one overnight stop near Sedan we will not enter Belgium.  So like you we are looking at where to go next year also May/June.  We love Italy and have been to Trasimeno twice.  It is a beautiful area for a holiday with lovely hill top villages and historic towns all very relaxed.  It is quite a flog down but worth the trip. We too do the Fern Pass then Brenner or Reich Passe (via Landeck) into Italy.  Be warned if using the Reich Passe there are very few stopping places for coffee/lunch etc but it is a toll free route.  Agree, Camping Nattersee is a good overnight stop with an an excellent restaurant adjacent.  Fill up in Austria before entering Italy!  We may head to Croatia having read AD's  reports and posts on his trips there.  Have not done the Romantic Strasse so leave it to others to comment.  We too got caught out by the Bavarian holiday a few years ago when trying to find a site on Garda now we take into account when planning; however, it is my perception that in the main they do not travel as far south as Trasimeno.

Enjoy your planning it is all part of the holiday.

Hi David, As you know we have considered Touiscampo before and, as you say, as we have not been would not have the same viewpoint as yourselves but, and it is a big but, its a long way to go just to 'see what its like' so its not a strong contender but a possibility.

We have camped in Spain at L'Amfora, Villanova and Playa Joyel and have enjoyed them overall but not been further South and a little concerned that there are no real draws other than the weather. The mass appeal to many Brits says something but not sure its what we want hence the request for thoughts and ideas.

Where is your now preferred Spanish site?

Italy would always be our preference but one draw of Spain is that we may be able to meet up with our friends, who are on Autotrail rallies, for a week or so.

I know you have been to Trasimeno, so thoughts on the area would be welcome, but I am thinking that having Cortona nearby, with Sienna not too far and the chance to sample some Montelpuciano Nobile will make for a good time.

Throw in the other en route possibilities of the Romantic Road, Innsbruck, and Garda and Trasimeno is the favourite at the moment but, as said, its a long time so plenty of planning time!

We last went abroad in 2016 and that year we did a round tour of Austria which we very much enjoyed. Italy is always a favourite of ours and I regret that we have never made it to Sicily, especially after watching the Montalbano series on TV!

One tour I would really like to do is Scandinavia, probably more Denmark and Sweden rather than Norway which we have visited by other means. Whether either remains just a dream only time will tell.

Corsica is fantastic, some of the best beaches we have been on and great scenery.

Thanks to those who have responded and apologies for being so tardy with my responses.

I think that I may need to be a more specific in my requests!

Hi comeyras, Sadly looks like you will be affected.

We have done the Fern once before, our MH holiday companions did not want to use a GoBox, and really enjoyed it with a overnight at Camping Aktiv in Prutz turning into a 4 night stay to avoid the end of the German holidays.

One thing we found was that to use some tunnels in Austria you need the vignette so we avoided them and the route from Germany into Italy was totally toll free.

We have not been to Nattersee but want to do the Brenner at least once and the site gets good reviews so seems an obvious choice.

The area around Trasimeno does look appealing but also now thinking this may be the chance to visit Croatia so even more options to consider!

Dont let me put you off Turiscampo its still a great site but I think we had maybe started to feel we owned the place and didnt like change

Hi David, I know the feeling about the change as we feel that about Bella Italia when the make changes!

I always start by looking at possible destinations and routes so when looking at Turiscampo, and the route onward, had considered the Cadiz area and Contil.

Now wondering if 2021 will be the time to visit Croatia so looks like it may be an AD inspired choice one way or another!

Hi David, One of my first things when looking at the options was to look at your Arrivaderci Roma story, and again admire the pictures!

I know it applies to many places but one of the reasons for considering just a couple of day trips to the Romantic Road is that looking at the many sources of info there does appear a sameness about the villages etc.

Having glimpsed Neuschwanstein, when we headed to and from the Fern Pass, that is a definite place we want to visit.

It reminded us of seeing Carcassonne the first time from the motorway and thinking wow!

We too would like to visit Sicilly and had looked at a holiday there in April and again, very tentatively, when things eased and it looked one of the 'safer' places but decided against it.

Hi euror, I am guessing that this was not following a crossing from Plymouth?!

It does look attractive but then seeing a bar, beach, sun and sea is!

If you do visit Croatia try and incorporate Plitvice Lakes into your plans. Bit if a tourist honey pot these days, but spectacular nonetheless.  Stay late or do the route in reverse to avoid the worst of the tour buses.

We like both Germany and Austria. Some of Germany can be a bit chocolaty box in looks but I find that very calming! The Romantic Road is 200 miles long from Wurzburg in the north to Fussen in the south so plenty of variety but it is a holiday in its own right. We went to Neuschwanstein many years ago without the caravan and it is quite a place and almost along side is Hohenschwangau. A short distance away is Linderhof Palace and Plansee so if you wanted to dip in you could stay nearby with plenty of attractions to visit reasonably close by. Even Oberammergau is not that far away and makes an interesting visit. I suspect the Romantic Road is easier to do in its entirety by motorhome?

Yes, best tackled from a local site. We used Camping Korana which is a big sprawling site. A lot of the terrain is unsuitable for pitching but if you’re prepared to go ‘off grid’ there’s lots of good options. There’s an on-site restaurant and shuttle bus to the lake entrance. On arrival use the shuttle to go directly to the other end of the site and work your way back to the entrance. Most of the bus tours have gone by about 3pm and that’s the best time to be there.

The drive inland to the lakes from the coast is interesting, lots of small villages still bearing the scars of war.

+1 for Sardinia, particularly the NE section above and below Olbia. Absolutely stunning beaches and turquoise water, but seems like the whole island is at the beach in high season. Very few concessions to foreign tourists or English language which makes it feel very authentic and Italian. Roads aren’t the best for MH touring but manageable, but locals can get a bit frustrated if you don’t drive as dangerously as they do!

Also like Camping Nattersee, but worth spending a few days there to explore Innsbruck, cable car up the Nordkette mountain and visit the Bergisel (Olympic) Ski Jump to watch the demonstration ski jumps. The close by Tirol Panorama Museum is amazing featuring an amazing giant 3D 360degree painting depicting Tirol history. Bus service connects Natersee to all local attractions. A great site for location, site & facilities.

Don't forget the Stubai Valley Tram from Natters or Mutters up to Fulpmes.

As we already have the ferry booked to Bilbao for next April I would hazard a guess we are going to try Spain again.laughing   I say try as we have been trying to get back there since our last visit in 2016, something always gets in the way.

For those who are thinking of the Romantische Strasse, as well as all the interesting places already suggested, there is also the 'Eagles Nest' and the 'Salt mines' we did them many years ago with our children. Might be back on our list again.

Neuschwanstein is a fairly tale castle, usually very busy with American tourists who always seem to know more about these places than the guides do wink it was a must for our boys as they were big fans of 'Chitty chitty bang bang' laughing

Some great ideas here although I also have Lagos Turiscampo in mind - maybe even this winter depending on things of course! I had a quick peep at it last year before having to make the mad dash back in March, and the reviews seem to be ok...  Cadiz also appeals. I am a winter traveller though as the high season roasts, so I may have to wait over a year!
