Coronavirus: Stay or go

Yes I agree, a walk along the beach would be nice but I just walk from home in the afternoons but my mind is pretending I'm somewhere else.
What I have found is many different parts that I've never been to within an hour or so from home. I actually got lost yesterday at a place called Princess Ann park. I thought I was walking in the right direction (circular) but ended up about 2 miles from home. Still an excellent place and worthy of further exploration.

It is possible to have an insert in a magazine only hours before it leaves for distribution , as this can be done by the mailing house when they wrap it with the address label. So no proactive guidance for members from the 'Club' ?

I have yet to see a police officer around us. But I know where most of them will be.

What proactive guidance did you want B&A? I don’t see it’s the club's role to advise its members on Govt guidance which is widely available to all. The situation regarding club sites, bookings and so on was changing daily so was near impossible to publish in the mag even in an insert.
I repeat, Covid-19 club related info appears on this website and was emailed to us all. I really can’t see what else you need.
It's my personal opinion that the club acted irresponsibly in not taking the decision to close sites at least a week earlier than they did, and I have told them so in no uncertain terms, but that has nothing to do with print schedules and despatch dates of the magazine. Incidentally, not everyone chooses to receive the mag.

How does one, living in a tower block, exercise from home without coming into contact with many others doing likewise?
To drive to an isolated spot, with many fewer bodies about, is to be recommended, if not to say preferable!
During the day I see far more people walking, cycling or running down my street that I would over the wilds of Ashdown forest.
To hell with a politicians half baked ideas, I know where I will be exercising for the next 6 weeks or more.

It’s a good job we don’t all think like that! 😤

However the use of the drone, and the showing of it on youtube, has seemed to have the desired effect as there were very few out in the Peak District following it's showing. The Derbyshire police have not had to issue any fines or arrest those ignoring the instructions unlike other forces have done. Perhaps a short sharp reminder was all that's needed. I think that Lord "HeeHaw" will have caused more problems with this pronouncements than the actions of Derbyshire police. The comments by Stephen White won't have helped either, but seeing it's not his county that he was talking about perhaps that was behind his thinking, and those idiots that head out in their cars for a walk will head for the LD and not the Durham Fells.

I don’t see the trouble with someone driving at all, not even if someone gets out to walk in an area with next to no one there with a partner you’ve shared house & car with🤷🏻♂️. Yet it’s acceptable to go to a park to exercise where a lot of others will do the same. I’d say if the police fines anyone on their ‘cobbled together’ reading of the cobbled together ‘rules’ it wouldn’t stand up in court. Yes I know some new ways of fighting the virus have to be accepted to stop the partygoers & BBQ folk but it needs joined together thinking not borderline police state😕

Those first five words are part of the problem though, surely. We may all see things slightly differently but the message couldn't be clearer "stay at home, don't drive to exercise" - there'll be plenty of time for that when we're through this crisis, hopefully!

And so it's ok if while heading out to your place of choice for a walk you have an accident or even a blow out, and another driver, perhaps in a wagon crashes into you and the emergency services have to come out, what about isolation then? All because you consider going out in the car (for a joy ride as that is what it is) as "essential" travel.

I didn’t realise we were personalising it🤷🏻♂️. I was having an opinion not organising anarchy.

I could drive 2 miles to our local beach, a much nicer walk there than around our estate. In fact I could drive to any beach near me. So could everyone else around here, but they aren't. Because then the beauty spots would get crowded, and we would not be complying with simple instructions. We could all find 'reasons' not to do what is being asked but this is a serious, sad time let's not be difficult, let's just comply, considering what some families are going through right now Its not much to ask.

Of course. But it’s the rest (after the first five words) that counts. Staying at home doesn’t guarantee anything, avoiding contact (of any kind) does. I’m lucky enough to have an open park/field literally next door, so it’s no problem. For those stuck in high rise, very difficult I’d have thought to avoid contact locally, even indirectly (surfaces).

Agreed, Freddy, and it must be unimaginably difficult for those living in high rise blocks and congested cities to adhere to social distancing. I don't know the answer to their situation but I do know that for them, and the rest of us, the answer isn't just to jump in a car to get away from others.

Of course it could by why exacerbate the potential problem by going for a non-essential drive in the car? That was the reason for my post above.l

Whilst all that makes perfect sense on the surface the Police have been given unprecedented powers. With such powers there is always the risk of them being misused. I have seen numerous interviews today with Chief Constables and Police and Crime Commissioners all saying we want to police by consent and I am sure this is a genuinely felt thing. Whilst these new powers may well be needed it is equally dangerous to accept them blindly without criticism because at the end of the day it is our liberty which is being curtailed. There is a balance between the need to contain things in the short term and the denial of longer term personal liberty which goes against everything this Country is supposed to stand for. Just keep it in mind!
