Whoopee -- two strange characters seen on the osprey nest at Loch Garten --
Oh Botheration !! It was just a pair of fiddling humans .
Sadly it seems that the RSPB et al have surrendered and accepted 2019 as an osprey free year at Loch Garten & have tidied up the nest to try to entice young O's to the nest. The Cameras are removed, the grass growing there has been removed and the 'cup' has been lined with, I think, peat based padding to avoid young, nervy birds from being scared off. Also the local area has a few trees growing which were not there when the first O's arrived. Apparently Scottish Natural Heritage may be approached to see if permission can be obtained to remove some of them, so there is less chance for predators such as goshawks and pine martens etc to hide in the immediate area.

Why on earth do we humans interfere with nature?
I was there 60 yrs. ago (approx.) when the birds were first introduced and successfully nested, rearing young.
Why do some busybodies in the RSPB seem to think that the birds want us to do their housework and cleaning etc.?
Leave it alone and it will either continue successfully, ad infinitum or become a failed site due inappropriate location or human interference.
For goodness sake leave things alone.

Surely the very act of re-introduction of them, by humans I may add, was "interfering with nature", as you said!! How hypocritical can you get!!
That interference has resulted in approximately 60 yrs of habitation at site by the Ospreys, so what is wrong with the present day RSPB helping the continuation of occupancy of the nesting site?

Just to help calm this down a little --
In the few days since the "nestwork" took place Ospreys have been seen on the nest, even bringing in a 'twig' or three. Without the camera functioning it has proved impossible to see if they are ringed or un-ringed BUT on site staff are reasonably sure that what they are seeing looks promising for occupation / nest claiming which may auger well for the future !!

OH THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, WN.
Sorry for shouting but you've just made an old man very happy .
Loch Garten site is, at present, undergoing refurbishment so the cameras are still down. Guess I will have to get my osprey pleasure from the posts you lot put on here. For which I thank you all

Sorry, a bit late with this but when we were down in Rutland two weeks ago there was a pair (well 2 any way) one on the nest and a second one on of the branches close by. We were much too far away to be able to see the leg rings.

Yes they're back, with the female Blue 35 arriving on 26th March. I can't see that there are likely to be eggs yet though. I'll have a look on the web cam tomorrow, if I remember.

Had a look tonight on the web cam and there certainly doesn't appear to be any eggs there. The one bird on the nest was looking round all the time, but I couldn't identify the ring markings.

ABM, reading the latest news from Cumbria Wildlife Trust the male partner of Blue 35, White YW arrived on the 27th a day after his mate. I've only seen one on the nest at any given time, but only look in occasionally.

Just seen that CJ17 arrived back at her Poole Harbour nest site at about 5:50 this morning.

If anyone wants to see great photos and short videos of the Ospreys at the various nesting sites throughout the country since they started to arrive back this year go to :-
community.rspb.org.uk/placestovisit
Then select one of the osprey location and from there you can keep picking different nesting sites.
Could someone please make the connection live as I'm unable to on my Kindle, thanks.

That's great, brue, thanks. From that page one can access lots of other osprey sites, the links are down the right hand side.

Have found another fascinating link :- kielderospreys.wordpress.com
It shows the daily track taken by one of their osprey, 7L/Aln, as she makes her way north from when she left France on the 11th April. All very interesting.
Help again needed with the link please brue, if you don't mind. Thanks.

Have found another website with lots of information on the UKs Osprey population..
ukospreys.uk/index.html
It would appear that 8 pairs already have laid at least 1 egg and a couple have at least 3 each.

WN, I remember you asking about the N Wales Ospreys. All 3 observed nesting sites, Dyfi, Glaslyn and Llyn Brenig have pairs at the nests. The first 2 nests already contain eggs, 2 & 3 respectively. The male at Brenig only arrived on 5th April so there should be an egg due any time soon if mating has been successful.

I was lucky enough to see this pair of Ospreys a couple of years ago at “Roundhouse, The Dam, Loch Doon, KA6 7QE, Dalmellington”. They are back again and their progress is covered on Facebook

I see that one of the Bassenthwaite birds (Green 5Y born 2006) was killed by a lorry by Brockholes on R.Ribble on the M6 on the 24th April. It would appear that it was taking up residence there after having previously been the breeding male at Esthwaite Water.

Brian, have you seen the other Osprey web sites apart from the RSPB one?
keilderospreys.wordpress.com
ukospreys.uk/minded.htm

Yes Nellie, I used the ukospreys.uk and it was nice to see the list on the right hand side, giving the numbers where known and the arrival dates etc but I did not use Keilder at all. I will save that to, I hope, cheer me up over breakfast which will NOT be fresh caught brown trout(s)
