Coronavirus Worries

Just amended the Brittany Ferries booking we had for early June. Wanted to amend it before the balance was due.
Knew it had to be done, but feel quite gutted 😢, hopefully things will be better come September for the new booking but who knows...
Time for a beer, I think.

I think you are right, Freddy, or at least it's maybe wise to assume so. We had a cottage in the Peak District booked for May to correspond with the now cancelled Setter Rescue walk in Matlock. I've just applied to rearrange it for the corresponding dates next year. I can't see any point in assuming things will be back to normal any time soon.

I know that, Freddy, and can always amend the booking again, free of charge.
If I’d cancelled the booking I’d have lost my 50% deposit, £500ish.Insurance would have covered some of this but there’s an excess on the policy so amending seemed more sensible.

I’m naturally disappointed that we won’t be getting away to France this year, among other places over here. We only retired last year (the wife in December) and were really looking forward to enjoying our new van. Anyway, having accepted the situation, my thoughts turned to next year. The trouble is, the more I hear, the more I’m thinking that it might still be with us. Even if we can sort it for our own country, I can see it returning from elsewhere. As I see it, our only hope is a vaccine. Depressing ain’t it?
Still, the good news is I sowed some sweet peas earlier 🙂

Reality is an illusion, caused by lack of alcohol. Cheers!

I was faced with pretty much the same situation. I decided to cut my losses (the balance was due shortly). As it turned out, I lost very little, around £35 I think for the sailings and pre-paid sites. The Red Pennant is still in force, so could in theory be used later this year, but in my mind, I’ve written it off.

My only bit of "skin in the game" at the moment is the Dover/Calais ferry fare for early June. It was a "budget fare" which doesn't allow for refunds/amendments so I'm waiting until nearer the time to see if, under restrictions applicable at the time, a refund would be available. Otherwise I'll accept that, in the great scheme of things, other people have far more to contend with than a £150 loss.

We have a booking at a CL over part of Easter. I sent owners an email to enquire, that due to the governments advice to limit non essential travel would they be revising their T&C's and refund deposits. Following is part of their reply:
For your information we are still open for business and will remain open. Although we are receiving some cancellations, we are still receiving some new bookings. We will remain open and we personally believe that guests staying here on our CL are probably better off than at home, as we have no near neighbours and are situated in open countryside.
In fact, we have received enquiries from people wanting to come and stay to enhance their isolation and opportunities for social distancing. Our cancellation policies remain unchanged at this time.
So no deposit refund my booking will remain open, lets see what happens

EU Leaders have reiterated that, although Member States can close borders to protect against Coronavirus, EU citizens [incl. UK] must be allowed to pass to get home.No mention of accommodation en route though!
EU is also urging speedy measures to get freight through Border Controls as quickly as possible to both protect the Internal Market and to enable vital items to reach Shops, hospitals etc.

I will hang on for a bit and see what further advice I receive, i.e. self isolate due to age etc. If the owner still won't refund the deposit I will cancel late on the arrival day and of course their site will go into my little black book

I must say I'm a little surprised, not to say disappointed by that post, one.
I think you, like us, have been regular supporters of CLs in the past and I'd have thought that, if a loss of deposit on the users part allows those sites to remain available after this crisis is over, it is a small price to pay.
Apologies if I've misinterpreted (given the final emoji!)

Well now we know it must be serious!

There is some truth in what you say M but as a gesture of goodwill repayment of my deposit would be a positive step. The CL said they have people trying to book the site during the period we would be there so they wouldn’t lose any income

I can see your point there, if the CL turns out to be full, but new bookings don't necessarily imply that. I think, as a regular CL user, that the owner is justified if they are not in fact fully booked - it's pretty similar to what Morris Leisure are said to be doing on another thread and I'd have thought they are more likely to be able to withstand the strain than a CL owner..
Goodwill will mean nothing if, as a result of this crisis, that CL, and others, are forced to close.

We too are cancelling our planned trip in U.K., 2 CAMC sites cancelled, 3 CCC ones still to deal, with, and 1 CL, which OH e mailed this evening. She did not ask for a refund of the deposit, as we do intend to visit at some point, but asked if it could be held to use against a future booking, which they immediately agreed to do.
So a good result so far.

My sympathy and best wishes go to anyone who has family or friends who have been touched by this tragedy. I know that some CT members have relations in Italy and Spain and that some posters live in France, Spain and Germany where the virus seems to have hit hardest.
There are indeed going to be many people touched by this pandemic. Not being able to venture out in the caravan or motorhome or to the pub for a meal or pub quiz pale into insignificance compared to the numbers of people infected and killed by this virus.
