Site Keys & Fobs (Coronavirus or not)

Being a former Paramedic & starting my working life as a Dental Nurse almost 40 years ago, the first thing I do when being handed the germ ridden toilet block keys &/or fob, is to disinfect them.

This is something I’ve done since 1st becoming a Club member nearly 20 years ago, as from my former professions, I know only to well that bugs & germs can be spread via these items.

I have suggested to the Club on their feedback questionnaires that the keys & fobs be sanitised/sterilised/cleaned after they are handed back in, then placed in a sealed, (recycled/biodegradable bag), ready for the next arrival. Failing that, the Wardens could hand the keys over with an unopened steri-wipe if the arriving Member wishes to sanitise the said items for themselves.

Personally, in the general pattern of life, I have no fear of germs and bacteria on such things. I suspect that, over the years, I have contacted most of them. This virus is a different matter however.

I just pop 'em into a bag & hang 'em in a quiet, clean corner of the van until it's time to return them. Seldom use the toilet blocks - I've got full Facility in my Motorvan wink --  Saves an absolute foooortune in wipes, disinfectant etc etc  innocent

From what has been said on the radio the USA numbers could be very misleading. As they don't have a free health service people have to pay to get a virus check, and there are millions who can't or won't pay for it, so the numbers infected is likely to be many more than the published figure. Also each state has it's own method of recording numbers and there's no coordination nationally.

My sister has just cancelled her Caribbean cruise, she was due to fly out 20th of this month. She was very impressed with the way P&O handled the whole thing. She is a serial cruiser so the prospect of another cruise later in the year is not something that worries her!!! Clearly exceptional times and I am sure the leisure industry will be judged on how they deal with the current situation viz a viz cancellations and movement of bookings.

As the fobs are required at many sites to activate the automatic entry/exit barrier for motor vehicles, I’m wondering if they’d still function from inside the bag hanging in the clean, quiet corner of your van, should you need to egress/access the site in your Motorvan?

Testing figures are no more reliable in the UK with people self isolating and not having either arrived from a hotspot abroad or been in contact with a confirmed carrier they are not being tested either from what I read.

As we progress into higher rates of infection from this virus please remember that not all contacting it will die.  There will be many who recover and I do hope there will be equal prominence given to their numbers as to the numbers of new cases and total cases by the media.  May not "sell as many papers" though.

I would trust the NHS 's figures more than those produced by a set of private companies spread over 50 states.

I would not trust any of the results, even as an indication. The UK are now going to test only those ill in hospital. Useful for diagnosis.

Before that tests were only carried out on contacts of those known cases which were few and far between and perhaps those returning from a hot spot and presumably showing strong symptoms.

Nothing to stop me holding on to the bag and waving the fob in the approved direction then hanging em on the hook again 'cos i can reach 'em from the driving seat - no problems laughing

well the science says that this virus will be a recurring theme and it would be best if we all caught it now so that we build up some immunity until such time that a vaccine is developed,

I know for some folk the virus could be a terrible infection, however, not a lot worse than a bad flu, and despite millions of people being vaccinated it still kills many people per year.

Does the science also say that it is best that we all cach it now as it will greatly reduce the cost of social care in the long run?

What I took from yesterday's Downing Street broadcast was that the same number of folk were likely to catch the virus, what ever we do, and the measures are just to delay and flatten the peak. Hopefully that should mean the NHS can cope and there will be a hospital bed and support available for the worst cases.

well we all have our opinions on how we should combat this virus, I believe today that all those involved are doing the best they can and i firmly believe we should all rally round and do our bit re washing hands, avoiding close contact etc.

Over the past couple of months many methods of attack have been tried and in the main proved to be ineffectual e.g. screening at airports was carried out in mainland China and Italy which has proved to be ineffective, complete lock down of cities but still the virus spreads at an alarming rate, only in China, if the numbers are to believed, are we now seeing a slow down in the number of infections.

I think the people like the Chief medical officer for the uk is between a rock and a hard place, if his science proves to be correct he will be a hero, if not, then he will get no thanks for giving his best.

So best we all make best of what is proving to be a bad situation.

What I gleaned Steve is that, due to the way testing has been carried out, is that the only real clue to the extent of local transmission would be the results from those who have been hospitalised. Information that I was not aware of hearing

ditto...and i thought it was a very professional performance by all concerned, as said . they will all get a kicking if they get it wrong but what is being tried in other countries e.g. Italy, does not appear to be working, so i am sure the professionals have studied this and devised an alternative plan of action they think may work, and who can blame them for that.

AS some 80% of the population are likely to be infected its not a case of "Will I get it" but "When"> As a vulnerable individual there is in reality little that I can do in the long term. We cant all isolate ourselves, life and services need to carry on and no doubt there will be lingering pockets remaining not for days, months but for years with the chance of catching it then. A pandemic was only waiting to happen and here it is.

I would say that is not true, and just more fake information that is being batted about, and having 2 daughters who are teachers 1 in the Uk and 1 in Spain who have first hand experience of coronavirus, a daughter who is a practice nurse and a son-in-law who is a doctor I am probably a litte more aware of the practises and procedures that are in place than some undecided

Given that, based on UK government statement we are 4 weeks behind the curve with regard to the rate of infection in Italy just ask yourself how the precautions in that country 4 weeks ago compares with our present strategy? The 'lock down' (press speak) in areas of Italy are only relatively recent and due to rapid increase in transmission,  such as we may well see in the next couple of weeks.

i believe that Italy has more of a tradition of 'multi generational' house occupation with aged parents living with their offspring and grandchildren; so if the grandkids pick up bugs, or their parents are infected in work, the ability for the infection to catch the [high risk] aged grandparents is increased and the living space decreased concurrently.

and you are only reading , half the story, no country in the world has managed to stop the spread of this virus, what the profesionals are trying to do is damage limitation, e.g. we know the tsunami is coming but lets try and spread it out a little bit so that our services stand a better chance of coping, hopefully by May /June the weather will have warmed up, there could be less people in hospital from winter flu etc so extra beds available. We also do not know just how effective personal hygiene will be in all of this, think positive.

The government has itself said testing will only focus on identifying people with the virus in hospital.

On the 12th March the government stated that 30,000 had been tested (my rounded up figure).

It also stated that: The UK is one of the first countries outside China to have a prototype specific laboratory test for this new disease. Healthcare professionals who are contacted by a patient with symptoms following travel to an affected area have been advised to submit samples to PHE for testing. Individuals should be treated in isolation.

My beliefs are based on statements from the government and healthcare professionals/NHS over the last few weeks. From what I have read from such sources I have concluded that testing - other than possibly of cases in hospital, do not provide a true picture.
