well prof John whatever his name today said that the virus was far far less contagious than flu, and he seemed to have a pretty good idea of what was going on and going to happen. I'll believe him.

Here is what one of the cruise lines is currently doing, quote:

o    For everyone’s safety, we will be conducting pre-boarding screenings for all guests, crew and visitors in all ports of embarkation. Further medical evaluation will be carried out if necessary. Please note: as part of these measures, guests and crew who have travelled from or through mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau within 14 days of embarkation will not be permitted to board our ships.

o    Following advice, we are also applying a further precautionary measure at this time; anyone who has travelled through or from some of the currently identified higher risk locations (please see our latest Health Advisory for current list) within 14 days of embarkation will undergo an enhanced pre-boarding screening to assess whether they should be permitted to board.

o    Individuals who, within 14 days of embarkation, have had close contact with anyone suspected or diagnosed as having coronavirus (COVID-19), or who are currently subject to health monitoring for possible exposure to coronavirus (COVID-19), will not be permitted to board our ships.

o    All guests and crew visiting our on-board Medical Centres with symptoms of any respiratory illness will be risk-assessed for coronavirus (COVID-19) and action will be taken as necessary.

Working with the relevant public health authorities, environmental disinfection on board will be performed in line with the highest level of hygiene.

    unquote.

Itineraries are also being changed to avoid high risk countries.

Much like this virus then! Only predictions!

As yet there is no anti-viral treatment for coronavirus, people with the infection can only be treated for their symptoms.

The WHO figures are 200,000 - 500,000 annually with a  peak of 560,000 deaths from flu. A University of Edinburgh study stated a 200,000 global number for 2019.

If the current projected death rate is now 0.5% - to 1% and not 3% of infected cases, together with this virus being far less contagious I can't see how the death rate exceeding your one million?

I'm not sure they' can predict when and if a mutation will appear or, more crucially, what that mutation will 'look' like!

It's interesting to note that the OP mentions Italy  on 1/2/20 in his opening post. Italy had no occurances at that time to my knowledge. The situation there is very, very different today and changing daily.

With regards to Coronavirus and flu, I am just trying to put things into perspective, not to alarm.....

They are only effective for dust particles. For protection against the virus you'd need medical masks which are individually fitting.

I was surprised to see 2 youngish people wearing dust protection masks on our flight from Madrid today.

Assume they removed them to eat and drink 🤔

Apparently these masks are only slightly effective in catching the wearer's splutters, coughs and sneezes but ineffective in protecting the wearer from those of others. The eyes are an entry point too so properly fitting surgical medical masks and goggles would be needed to worn to offer a significant level of protection.

in my book anthing that acts as a deterant is better than no deterant at all even if it means using kitchen role etc, but safest way if possible, is to avoid crowded places, so shopping could be kept to a minimum or done at off peak times, avoid crowded public transport, etc. i know some of these are not easy if you are working but if retired simply avoiding crowded places is a good start to keeping safe.

Well we have tickets for the League Cup final at Wembley, tomorrow.

    And we will be there!

( doubt if security will let us take kitchen rolls into the stadium,)

    🙂

And as the older generations are more susceptible to being worst affected by the virus then we have more ways of keeping "safe"surprised

If on a site and the barricades are in place t could well be one of us oldies staying away from possible carriers not being as some think "unsociable winkcool

Agreed, but it's the advice we get from 'authority' which helps write our books. Today on TV the suggestion was made that masks can actually increase the possibility of catching the virus, and therein lies the problem, contradictory and outdated info. being given. What is 'good' today is advocated as problematic tomorrow in several suggestions it seems. The point was also made that if the mask worn gave only a perception of protection then that was a good thing. undecided

The placebo effect can be comforting, help prevent panic.  It’s still a tiny risk in UK at the moment.

Good hygiene is crucial (a life skill?), a degree of basic immunity from everyday germs helps, avoid high risk crowds if possible (hospitals and doctor surgeries top our list, closely followed by anything with children! We are immune to dog bourne 🦠) Airports and cruise ships, big places of worship, shopping centres, all alien to our lifestyle, cafes and restaurants, takeaways and deliveries, non essential, won’t be missed.

Does concentrate the mind a bit though. What if......🤔

Our son, wife and 1 year old granddaughter live in Macau (next door to Hong Kong) and they have to wear a mask for shopping, travel, and some work places.  The baby obviously won’t keep one on!  They have ‘guards’ in the public park, which has recently reopened, and in the play area and you have to wear a mask to visit.  Only 3 children at a time can enter the play area and they cannot use the swings or slide (??).  Some restaurants have also recently reopened along with a few of the hotels.  Really hope it doesn’t get that bad in the UK.  They have 3 weeks holiday coming up and are unsure where to go, he had thought of Europe somewhere.  I’d love to say come here to see us but as we’re ‘oldies’ now what may they bring with them!!! 😱  We have 3 other grandchildren in Hong Kong and they are off school until at least after Easter, they are bored stiff!!

The Swings + Slides prohibition seems quite sensible to me, H, 'cos children tend not to carry Tissues, Disinfectant gels etc. We are regularly told that Door handles, bannisters, support rails etc can carry the 'flu virus and such like for quite a long period so should be regularly wiped clean. I don't suppose children's slides etc will be any safer in that respect.

I can just imagine three or four parents squabbling about which Tissue, / wipe / gel is safest  whilst the kiddiwinks stand there egging them on  !!  wink

Depends who you listen to or which articles you read. ffp3  might be effective to protect you but you would also need goggles as the virus can infect you through the eyes via your sinuses. They wouldn't stop droplets escaping should you already have the infection and so you could infect others even if you were wearing one and they weren't.

Not many I have noticed on the news programmes seem suited and booted,   apart from those  who are "in deep" with those diagnosed with the virus, so as with the many we have the next best that is available , as per the web sitessurprised

Wow Red Pennant is expensive.  We are one of the fortunate ones that still have ADAC (no longer available for new members) Their plus cover for both of us is about 100 euros for the year.
