Ferry to Spain
We are travelling on the ferry from Portsmouth to Santandar for the first time. We are taking our car, caravan and two dogs. We will be travelling back via the Channel tunnel one month later. We are looking for advice for suitable places to visit with two adults and two dogs. Any ideas folks?

beaches, mountains, culture, cities, villages, long stay sites, quick visits??
theres a huge amount to see in spain, portugal and france in four weeks, but youll want to factor in some 'feet up time' too, wont you, so that will eat into your exploring time...
we are off this week, down through france to (nr) Valencia, feet up for a fortnight, then explore slowly the east/south coast of spain, back up and enter france at the eastern border and then take some time to make use of the warming french weather....
however, we have 12 weeks or so, so will have plenty of time for resting and exploring.....
fpur weeks gives you a fortnight in france and the same in spain.....not a lot IMHO but dedicated touring folk can cover much in two weeks.
we need much interspersed wine/walking/cycling time
a bit more info might get a few more tips.....good luck and enjoy.

Age of people? Age of dogs? Activity levels of both?

I am in my sixties and my wife is in her fifties. The dogs are eight and nine. We like to do plenty of walking 5 to 10 miles per day. We enjoy being in nice countryside, the mountains and the coast as well as visiting interesting cities, towns and villages.

We enjoyed the Picos area. The Cantabrian / Asturias coastline is also spectacular. The weather isn’t as dry as the Med side though. We’ve booked a similar trip to yourselves for the summer, but we’re returning via St Malo.
Have a great trip!

That's good. I wish we were. I suggest you do an internet search for family walks in the Picos de Europa area - which Pliers has already suggested. The walks which Google or Safari bring up on the Culturetrip.com website are worth looking at. That area is about a two hour drive from your arrival point at Santander.

Come up through the centre of France. Stop at Millau or one of the 2 campsites at Le Rozier in the Gorge du Tarn. Excellent walking up from Le Rozier onto the plateau to view the Vultures gliding down the gorge. These have been reintroduced. Walking is energetic but rewarding. The area around Millau and the Gorge itself has plenty to offer by way of sightseeing.
Then head a bit further north into the Auvergne region for a countryside shaped by volcanoes. Again plenty of walking and sightseeing.
If you fancy somewhere a bit different before getting to the hills then stop off somewhere near the Camargue on the Med. A quite unique area. You could then travel into the Luberon or Provence if the weather further north is poor. Wonderful walking around Gordes or thetry St.Remy de Provence and Les Alpilles range of hills. Visit places like Les Beaux or Arles or Ile sur La Sorgue or Avignon.
Have to stop as I'm being to drool.😀

Hi, Ron,
We live in East Lancashire, and since retiring we always travel down for the ferry the day before. The Bilbao ferry leaves Portsmouth at 12 ish, and we stay over at Rookesbury Park if we’re on that crossing.
The Santander ferry leaves later, and we’ve found Morn Hill more convenient. The wardens there have always been happy to let us stay a couple of hours after the normal 12 departure time so we’re not arriving at the ferry too early.
If you fancy the Picos, I’d recommend camping La Viorna at Potes, and camping Picos de Europa at Avin, depending on which side of the area you prefer. Both are in ACSI.
Both in lovely spots with good walking on the “doorstep”.
An area I also like is the region inland from Biarritz. I could witter on forever, but probably best not to.
I’m sure you’ll all have a great time whatever you decide.

The CL David is referring to is called Carefree Nurseries. We stop there sometimes when catching the Portsmouth ferry. It's only about 15 minutes to Portsmouth harbour. There's a large Tesco nearby where you can fill up if needed.
I agree with Pliers as well. You could spend a good week, weather permitting, in the Picos.
Enjoy your trip.
