Travelling in Germany & Austria
We're thinking of travelling from Calais to Vienna in early June 2020, then staying a few days before joining the CMC escorted tour 'Alpine Austria'.
Any tips for route & campsites in/around Vienna & stopovers on route would be appreciated.

Our usual route to Austria is via the French autoroute system to Metz and then onto the German Autobahn south to Fussen. (Some prefer to travel via Belgium and Luxembourg to save of tolls.) At Fussen we would head for the Fern Pass but if going to Vienna it would probably be better to travel via Munich and then join the Austrian Inntel motorway all the way to Vienna. When we last stayed near Vienna we used this campsite http://www.davidklyne.co.uk/donaupark_camping.html which is at Klosterneuburg not too far out of Vienna. Pitches a bit tight compared to the average Club site. The major advantage is that just outside the campsite is a transport exchange with buses and train right into the City Centre. Easier to suggest stopovers once you have decided on the route you wish to take. Austria is a lovely country to tour in.

RPybus, That sounds a great trip.
I will try to suggest a first night stop if you choose which of David Klyne's first day routes you prefer, and if you say what time you are leaving Calais, and how far you want to travel that day.
I always make an ambitious first day plan of that sort, but have to admit the plan always fails soon after lunch. At that point we just look in the site guide book and end up stopping somewhere else.
I hope it goes well. I am envious.

I took the advice of members on here when I travelled to Croatia for the first time. Depending on how far you want to tow each day - we were advised to do approximately 250 miles each day - and our first overnight stop was at Prumtal Camping in Oberweis, northern Germany (20 minutes from Luxembourg and very cheap fuel) Our second was about 30 minutes this side of Munich, Lech Camping near Augsburg (very easy to find off the autobahn and a filling station 300 yards further on) Both sites excellent. Vienna is about 290 miles from there. No tolls this route but you will need to purchase a vignette at the Austrian border. Enjoy your trip.

Thanks for the quick replies.
Our 'rig' is a Celtic Rambler, Fifth Wheel type caravan pulled by a VW Amarok, so small pitches & tight corners may be an issue, however, once pitched up we usually use the Amarok to visit towns & places unless parking is an issue in towns, then public transport will come into play.

Hi we did a 3 week stay in june stayed at Camping bettembourg in Luxembourg booked via acsi, bus stop outside the site. We travelled Calais via Brussels ring road avoid 7-9 am traffic worse than m25, about a 5 your drive. We went onto Camping lech Augsburg just of the autobahn 5 mins. Fantastic site as is Augsburg city staff wonderful good restaurant and facilities, it's in the venture abroad book. Beware though extensive roadworks for next 2 years South of Stuttgart for new hs rail link. We went onto Innsbruck Camping alpen Mark acsi again. Allow extra time on Munich ring road for roadworks. Don't forget to buy your Austrian vignette prior to border. Also we travelled on Sundays fewer lorries but the services were full of parked up lorries so difficult to find parking. Hope this helps. By the way on leaving Luxembourg cheap fuel at remich prior to germa n border 6 filling stations cheap beer cigs and coffee!!

If heading across Germany towards Munich on the A8 then the site at Bergen, Camping Wagnerhof should accommodate your outfit. It's only 10 minutes max off the motorway just passed Lake Chiemsee. You should be able to make Vienna in a day from there, we have once or twice. Can't recommend any sites at Vienna as we went further east down to Neusiedlersee.

RPybus, Having looked up a photo of an outfit like yours I am inclined to agree with Jonray's comments above. I don't think you can be as casual about choosing overnight sites as we are, so I had better back out of this one. Good luck.

I am not sure the site I mentioned would be suitable given the outfit size. It's not so much the accommodation unit but when hitched it needs a fair amount of room to get it into place. http://www.davidklyne.co.uk/Prumtal_Camping.htm mentioned above has some bigger pitches, and an excellent restaurant as well! This campsite near to the German/Austrian border http://www.davidklyne.co.uk/camping_bella_augusta.html has some pretty big pitches with plenty of room to move it into place. http://www.davidklyne.co.uk/camping_lindlbauer.html is another site with decent sized pitches and on some you can park side on. For an alternative for Vienna we did stay at this site many years ago which might be able to accommodate you https://www.campingwien.at/en/camping-wien-neue-donau/#lage-nd

We have toured Germany and Austria with large twin axle caravan for 14 years and without caravan before that for ver 25 years.
i have built a website to cover the caravan trips we have made.
https://www.joysofeuropeancaravanning.co.uk/
We always used ACSI Card where possible and always emailed a site 2/3 days ahead to enquire if pitch and entrance were suitable if we had not been before.
I would always suggest The Belgium, Germany to Austria route and can provide this for you with overnight stays.. we have stayed at Camping Tulln just outside Vienna with excellent nearby station for train to centre of Vienna.

Hi Richard
Our reply isn’t very useful in terms of where to stay near Vienna. However we just wanted to let you know that we did that tour this year and would say, without doubt, that it was one of the best holidays we’ve ever had. The campsite at Grubhof exceeded all our expectations and the excursions were fantastic, good variety of city and mountains. We drove through Germany from Zeebrugge so didn’t stay near Vienna. If you need to know anything else about the trip please just ask and we’ll be in touch. By the way, we’re hoping to do the Loire Valley cycle tour this summer. Has anyone done this?
