Good spots all round. Went Red Squirrel spotting today in a couple of different locations but without success. Lots of young Thrushes about as well as Wrens.

The other satisfying thing at Minsmere we’re the number of Sand Martins occupying the nest site by reception/cafe 👍

Pleasant wander round the RSPB's Campfield Marsh Nature Reserve this afternoon. Heard ChiffChats and Reed Warblers, spotted a Large Heath Butterfly and a Four Spotted Chaser Dragonfly. Lots of other small birds along the walk way but much too quick to be able to identify correctly. Curlews and Buzzards flying over our site this evening.

If any members are within a short drive of the Avon Gorge, I highly recommend a trip to see the Peregrine Falcon juveniles honing their flying and hunting skills. Admittedly it is hit and miss if they are performing, but what a sight if you time it correctly. TOH and I went for a stroll around Durdam Downs yesterday and had the most spectacular display lasting for near 40 minutes. The 2 surviving female youngsters were spiralling and cascading through the sky and bushes within feet of where we were stood. TOH was totally surprised and excited when one came crashing through the bushes within 6 ft of her while overhead (10ft) the sister was waiting to continue the chase.

They were attacking shoots at the top of trees around us in mock attacks on prey and even tried to catch what appeared to be a large Bee. I have been watching these magnificent birds for a number of years now, but this was the best day I have every enjoyed birding.

Superb photos BM and very envious and would to see them, had the golden orioles flying about with the juveniles but not close enough for photos as I was hanging out the washing and last Friday when driving back from our local shopping town there was a hobby on the electricity cable but soon took off but a lovely sight to see, we were away a couple of weeks ago and only 30 minutes from here on a small site in the next department of Aveyron and whilst sitting outside the caravan we had a lot of black and red kites flying around also a lot birds still singing away in the morning and night did hear a nightjar but not able to see it and there were a lot of hornets flying over our pitch but not the Asian ones thankfully.  Friends of our had a nightjar fly over their pool whilst they were having a late evening dip also plenty of swallows but they do get a lot of insects by their pool.

Living in the Country is wonderful, at the bottom of my garden is a meadow beyond that is a wheat field, I love our countryside. However there is a downside-‘what have you seen?’ I’ve seen the seasons move by swiftly(too swiftly)😕, it doesn’t seem that long ago I was celebrating the snowdrops & daffodils, now the hay has been cut giving me a view of the wheat-a constant reminder of how quickly the harvest will be upon us. . .autumn then winter. . .Where did the year go😊

Great photos BM I’m so envious.  Guess you didn’t have any luck at Slimbridge?

RK, what sort of month do the Golden Orioles start their journey southward.

Saw the first field of early Barley harvested on Monday, the year is sure speeding on

    Thanks OP

I did respond on your thread regarding the Little Bustard, if that is what you are asking about.

Head and shoulder sighting from about 150 yds. Twitchers hadtravelled from all over to see just a glimpse. The warden told me that they arrived one morning at 07.00 to find a lady that had driven down from the north of Scotland overnight, but sadly for her the Bustard did not show that day or since.

Get yourself down to Baltic Warf and I will give you the guided tour of all things Peregrine.

Hi Oneputt according to my book it looks like August onwards for the golden orioles going south and they have been singing again this afternoon.  I have a good buddleja bush near the front door and today it has been covered with butterflies painted ladies commas silver washed fritillary marbled white and huge numbers of great banded graylings what a site but if you get near with a camera they all fly off must try a different idea best sighting of butterflies in any quantities this year which has been not a good one, butterflies is one of my wildlife interests as well as birds also moths and wild flowers and it has been a good year here for orchids had huge numbers of bee orchids on our field.

Thats a shame OP the juveniles started hunting and practicing stoops today chasing Jackdaws and Pigeons, They failed, but not by much. I have not seen this before but very impressive from such young birds.

We had a hummingbird hawk moth in the garden earlier, never seen one before , what a fascinating creature. Spooked my wife as she thought it was some kind of mutant bee (she doesn't like bees ! ) .

Not long back from our recent trip and it is wonderful to report that every single day that we have been out walking, and there have been quite a few, we have heard or seen a Skylark.

We reacquainted ourselves with some our neighbours this week. One of them told us not to venture into the woods at the back of us. A popular dog walk and nature learning area for the local primary school. Why, we asked? There's an Adder in it. He came across the snake when walking his dog, the snake was sunbathing. Unperturbed he took a picture of it on his phone. He showed it to us. It's a Grass Snake we both said. Are you sure? Yep! Oh bugger, he said, because I've told the school and they've stopped the kiddies going in. laughing

He's lived within a mile of his current house for nigh on 80 years and this is the first Snake he's ever seen. He was thrilled. Isn't it wonderful to find something new in nature to be thrilled about at 80?

We have a few compost heaps in our garden and also an old compost bin which we've had to leave alone. When we open the lid it's full of slow worms and there's a grass snake around too. Keep meaning to take a photo but they dive down into the compost when disturbed.

We live just around the corner from him and had Grass Snakes in our compost bin when we had one. We have seen one on a couple of occasions in the field adjacent to his house, the field he always walks his dogs in. How he has avoided seeing one is a mystery but he was happy enough. They do normally slip away if they feel any presence but I'm still a bit surprised.

Have had the young golden orioles flying about later in the evening and early in the mornings the last few days and they have not quite got the adult singing notes yet a bit more of a screech similar to Jays and Magpies. Had a red a squirrel run along the top of our wall the other day shortest route into next field. Not keen on snakes had a whip snake awhile ago go into the wall by the gate not seen it since and they like eating the  lizards and we had one of the bigger green lizards run front of the car got to the side of the road safely, went down the road the other day and had a male stag beetle walking in the middle of the road so got a branch and managed to put it in a tree not sure why it did not fly perhaps it may have only hatched out even made a local stop in his van to see what I was doing and very pleased he did not run over it.

You'll be making Oneputt go green with all that talk of Orioles, RK.smile

Nice to get a different perspective of local nature.

Edit - Do you know when hunting season in September starts? I know it's usually somewhere in the middle.

Hi Wherenext just looked up the dates and seems most of France starts September 8th for the hunting season, makes looking for wildlife later in the year a bit more difficult.

We still have the local toads calling at night and it seems not so many about this year as the local LPO unit usually put fences up to stop them crossing the road down by the local wells and sompes with notices warning you about them but not this year. The Orioles are calling again this evening whilst we were out watering the plants.

I’m thinking of travelling up through the Brenne during the second week of September. I’m guessing that hunters are not allowed into nature reserves?

As far as I am aware they aren't but it's France, so it wouldn't surprise me. You may find that some of the lakes will have been drained though. Fish is one the mainstays of the reserve.

You might well bump into us two there. Haven't sorted out any plan yet.

A comma butterfly has appeared in our garden everyday since Tuesday 😀. Haven't seen one in the garden for years. Delighted. It likes the lighter of our 2 buddleia. Still have plenty of whites and the odd small blue as well.

Walking the grand dog through the woods this morning they was dead unmarked shrew on the path 😢. I'd forgotten just how tiny they are.
