We saw lots of children on site during our last 2 weeks in France (just back) I seem to remember that this year the Bavarian 2 week break was later than normal due to the lateness of Easter this year. I think they didn't start the break until around the 10th June.
Some sites we were on were less than half full while others were very busy, 2 of them we were lucky to get a pitch.
We took ghe unusual step of phoning ahead to check.
Hope you enjoy your stay and don't suffer to much with the high temps forecast.

The Australian larrikin part of my character has enjoyed some of you guys having lively debates. I wasn't expecting that when I posted but long my it continue. We oldies need some excitement in our lives.
To add some context from my own experience: We took a River Seine side pitch in the Maisons la Fitte ACSI site (Which i highly recommend) a couple of weeks ago. We had visited the site twice before and happily paid the supplement for the full service pitch on the bank of the river. I didn't notice how much the price had risen over last year when I booked in. Whilst the standard ACSI pitch is 16 Euros per night, our pitch was 37 Euros and a massive increase from the 26 Euros supplement price of last year.
I tell you all of this because that is nowhere near the most we have ever paid, even for a standard pitch in England which was at the Riverside site in Plymouth. It is good business practice to charge what the market will bear but in England we pay a lot of money for piss poor product and piss poor service.
To balance that off somewhat, the price of food in France seems to me to be higher than in England and I'm not too sure that the quality is better. I also somewhat suspect that the French guys don't do too much online shopping. The price of shoes there is eye watering.
Never mind, the main point or question of my post related to whether or not we need to book sites outside of the traditional peak periods of July and August. I prefer not to do so as I love the freedom. What do you think?

We have just got back from 5 weeks in France and, as usual, we found that the sites favoured by Brits are on certain routes and in certain regions. If you are travelling South from Calais using the popular Rouen route then Bien Assise, Neufchâtel en Bray, and a few other sites I won’t list are anything up to 90% Brits. The Dordogne region is almost exclusively British and other popular areas are the Loire and Provence. However, we were on a site in the Lot Valley with no Brits and for three weeks in Gard, north of Avignon with only two British couples. On the other hand, it was 90% Dutch.

If you talking about these Sceptered isles then apart from the known honey pots I would say no booking req on club sites ,a quick perouse of the late availability pages will be a guide if the sites have pitches at weekend's then they wil l during the week, and that is even in peak times

Not so sure on that JVB!
The 2 CAMC sites we used in June at the start of our trip are hardly "honey pot"........Ayr and Garlieston......yet both were full during our stays. If we had just turned up then we would have been very disappointed.
If you are just looking to go to one site for a short time, and not bothered where it is, no booking may be OK, but if you are on a tour then there are not enough CAMC sites in an area to enable you to be sure you can be where you want to be without booking.
Pretty sure you booked ahead for all the sites you used recently?

And I thought motor caravaners were all for a sense of adventure, but then there are not many "cheap" places,,and England is full of them from over the border as they have started their school summer break as we have found them on most of the sites,
So you did not use the facilitie to tour
You now see where people "escape" to from both ends of the country

No booking required? You are so wrong, JVB.

Have you actually tried it is very possible as we have noted by useing the availability page, our friends with their motor caravan very rarely book , just call the site of their choice to double check availability the morning they are moving on, the only times they book is when a group of us are on a "meet"at a chosen site
Not that we would as I like, know when and where we are going

"Anyway, isn’t this thread in the Overseas section? Why has JVB66 diverted us into discussing UK Touring????"
Probably learnt from those masters of diversion in the UK touring section! (No names, no pack drill - you know perfectly well who you are!)

We onl book now as my sense of adventure has.waited as I have got older
And this thread seems to imply that at times booking is needed in other countries and getting more so and that is with all that space and as some say the many more sites than this crowded isle

Yes, it is possible but only if you’re not fussy where you end up. Why would I try it when I’m trying to reach a particular destination?
I speak of what my eyes and experience tell me. Site full boards are very much the norm.

That's surprising because both those sites have plenty of space this weekend...and next.

Not really surprising as the Scottish school holidays began on Thursday last week, so CAMC Scottish sites are now on peak prices. Before that more people, like us, were taking advantage of the lower prices.
Even some CAMC sites in England are now on peak prices, so we are now on CCC sites, taking advantage of the age and other discounts they offer, or using CLs.
There's a CAMC site not so far from where we are at present, that would cost us an additional £4.50 per night right now.

we are currently at Henley for the Regatta....as its a special event, we booked when we last used this site, last autumn...not surprisingly, the site is full.
we also had a few days to spare prior to getting here and wanted to revisit Oxford...I checked the Oxford C&CC site and we managed to get the last pitch there...
so, both sites booked in this mini tour as we wanted specifically to be at these two sites....and both would have been full had we not done so.
our tours here aren't particularly lengthy and if using club or commercial sites we will book....the THS sites we also use generally don't require booking.
i don't particularly like this situation as it prevents us from being as flexible as we are in other places but this is the nature of the beast here so we play the game like (pretty much) everyone else.
