The lure of ehu

Sorry, it's not meant to be patronising.
We know people who do live off grid (partly because of the location) and manage very well with alternative power and boreholes etc.
It can be done - he manages very well - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Shepherd%27s_Life
Just interested in your provision at home.

Personally I think the suggestion by some that they're happy not to plug in is fine, it saves electricity and it should reduce site fees for those who choose to go without.
There was quite a bit of disappointment when the club insisted that everyone hook up for an inclusive fee at the National and enjoy the proximity of a noisy generator, to cover the costs no doubt.
Choice is a fine thing!

We spend time in a gorgeous cottage on Dartmoor that is almost off grid. We got there a couple of years ago to find owner in a bit of a panic. It had been such a dry Summer the usual water supply had dried up for first time in living memory. We just told him for us it was part of the adventure, he was so relieved, said that some of his visitors would have gone home, made his life a misery. An hour after our arrival he had a bowser of fresh water sorted and had arranged with a borehole company to sort out something on the farm, so it couldn’t happen again. We found the whole thing fascinating, all over Dartmoor boreholes were going in. Proof indeed that the climate is changing if the SW “sponge” is drying up! We had a glorious two weeks, never lacked for water for anything. All sorted. Hoping to get back this year.😁

maybe those worried about the clubs finances could think whether 16 amp is really vital.
16 amp is not vital but, I suspect, that the saving in electricity between a 10 amp and 16amp EHU is generally fairly minimal. The biggest power user will be heating for most. I have 1kw, 2kw and 3kw options. I choose 2kw normally but 1 kw on a 10amp site. Do I use less power overall than on 16amp site? I doubt it is significant either way.
16 amp is nice in a cold winter and sub zero temps in daytime I reckon. The only time that I am likely to use a 3kw setting is at times, such as last December, when I set up on site and went to Morrisons to shop and get a lunch.

who has said they are worried about the finances of the club? Have I missed something? is the club in financial trouble?
But cut the amp to 4 or 6 amps and who will want to come to a club site when non club sites offer 16? Or would they come in the numbers are now? I think that a cut to 4/6 will lead to real reduction in income and therefore real financial trouble.

I don’t think the Club will be cutting the amps, it knows it’s target market. It’s interesting on CLs though, when you get a “trying CLs for first time” visitor. Most adapt fine, but you do get the odd outfit every now and then that blows a fuse on a 6 or 10 amp Site. It’s only practice and a bit of adaptation.

👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻, He started a powerful movement did Merve. It’s good to see it helped you too. Power(solar of course) to you DD😊

There’s no shame in being helped DD👍🏻. I don’t have an LV but I followed the thread👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻😊.

I find that a shame DD. You could have helped so many people but by keeping it to yourself, they missed out including me. I have simply highlighted the possibilities of modern tech. When did you get your lithium? I and others would be interested to find out what your ‘well ahead’ means? Genuinely I am interested- Anything to improve my setup. Safefill have got cylinders in now but they are flying off the shelf.

I don't think that EHU is a premium service, more like the bare minimum

My comments on the other "How to thrive" thread are probably pertinent.

"It's beyond me as to why anyone would become evangelistic about the use of EHU or not; its just a matter of personal choice. Our setup allows for both on and off grid, what others do is entirely up to them."
Absolutely agree with that last phrase and how good it would be if folk adopted that mantra to all "areas" of touring!

Its really suprising that the worn out argument of reducing prices when it is getting more difficult ,so many say, over longer periods to actually get a pitch on club sites, and use the what is now accepted as a basic requirement of have EHU to the pitch

Couldn’t agree with you more Easy. The EHU is wanted by the vast majority of caravanners thank goodness but all I was saying is there is a sizeable minority that don’t require EHU. I suspect that the increasing use of the solar panel has increased the amount of nights off-grid but not to an extent where it will become anything like mainstream. However, if DD was to explain how far ahead of the game he is, perhaps more would be able to comprehend off grid caravanning?
