The lure of ehu

The cost effectiveness of introducing metered electricity would have to be considered carefully on leased sites. It was something I mentioned in a previous post (even if it were allowed by the site owners).

One thing is certain. This thread is doing its bit for global warming with all the hot air.
Touching briefly on the safety issue of gas/electricity. Many years ago I had a yacht with a petrol engine which several prospective purchasers thought hazardous. Yet they were perfectly happy with LPG cylinders which would make a far bigger bang in the event of a malfunction. Risk is often a case of perception rather than reality.

I think I may need to change my Calor cylinder soon. I've been using it since October and it must be nearly empty now. October 2017 that is!
If necessary, I can run almost all the electrics in the caravan off 12v - directly or by using a fairly big inverter. Microwave, hairdryer, espresso machine, electric blanket, kettle, etc as required but not the space or water heating. Were I fitting a solar panel now I would aim for at least 200 watts as one gets little out of a horizontal panel this far north in winter.
Has anyone heard of a solar panel that can be electrically heated to remove frost and snow?

Seems like a lot of work/bother to me when I can just push a blue plug in, the working out of numbers and ways to save a few £'s seems at odds to enjoying a break in my caravan. If someone wants to save the planet, save their pennies or live in the past when technology allows us comfort without working hard at it, then by all means go for it. Me, I'll plug in and put the electric kettle on.

Me too. The off grid purists will be pushing water purification kits next so that we are not tied to taps, water pipes and mains supply - another grid they will seek to free us from, so we can collect water from a caravan roof - just take a big water butt to collect it in. Free at last !

You are on to something there.
Based on the colour and taste of some "through the tap" water supplies that we have encountered in the UK we already need purification kits! I don't see that the stuff coming out of the sky can be much worse.
Almost all of us have an Aquaroll or similar to take on the role of water butt, so all we need is a guttering and piping kit to fit in the awning channel.

agreed, that's exactly why we have it....independence.
however, if you always go to a club site and are happy with their 'current' prices, why bother, indeed...

I look up to him, as he is a Caravanner...with an awning, But look down on him as he only has a Trailer Tent, I am a Motorhomer who doesnt need a Serviced Pitch........I know my place. An Awning pitch, so i have more room and can roll out my canopy without the tape measure coming out.

And as one who drives a converted mini bus I reckon I don’t even count.
On the other hand, I look up to no one and I certainly don’t look down on anyone.
Equality for all is my view.

I found a this quote from the C&CC on line:
"People would be more aware of their electricity use if we had metered pitches,".
"The caravans and motorhomes are getting more efficient, but the psychology is that if people have paid their extra £5-a-night for the hook-up, then they tend to max-out on their consumption. It's human nature, I suppose. People try to get their money's worth.
"Although the manufacturers are making the caravan more efficient, the psychology of the end user isn't the same."
I wonder which Club is going to blink first?

Was that an official comment by C&CC, PD, or just someone having a guess on their forum?
It's not worded officially so I assume it’s the latter. In that case, it’s no more authoritative or knowledgeable than the posts on this forum.

I note a lot of the comments published that are attributed to officials of the Caravan and Camping Club are couched in quite informal language.
Perhaps something to do with their marketing tag line of "The Friendly Club"?
