    Sorry I missed this post WTG.

    MOTD is Match of the Day! Along with more cultured stuff we enjoy lots of sport as well. Haven’t been to a live match for a while, but walking up the steps at Old Trafford, hearing the dull roar, until you reach the top and then..........😲 like Maximus Decimus Meridia v The Tiger! Brutal, but fun!

    Clarissa can be found for free on both YouTube and Daily Motion. Not the best quality, but it’s all about the actors.😃

    I know that OH has taken to watching a crime drama about a New Zealand copper. No idea beyond that.

    A Google tells me it is probably the Brokenwood Mysteries

    WTG, her are some other offbeat, very watchable films/TV dramas:

    Donovan Quick, retelling of Don Quixote story, set in Glasgow, with Colin Firth, brilliant.

    The Hour of the Pig aka The Advocate. Set in medieval France, funny, sad, risqué, again with Colin Firth.

    The Missing Postman, gentle offbeat TV semi comedy with James Bolam and Alison Steadman. 

    Wimbledon Poisoner, TV drama with Robert Lindsay and Alison Steadman, Larry Lamb.

    GBH, superb drama about corrupt politicians, set in Liverpool, again with Robert Lindsay and the brilliant Michael Palin. Very funny in places.

    Our Friends In the North, the series that launched so many great acting careers.

    Master of the Moor. Murder mystery set on Dartmoor. It’s a Ruth Rendell story, very dark, with Colin Firth and John Michie. Filming was done in and around Bovey Tracey.

    Melissa, with Jennifer Ehle and I think Adrian Dunbar, murderous thriller.

    I also enjoyed the BBC version of Ivanhoe, with Ciaran Hinds. 

    Jane Eyre......Timothy Dalton version.

    All much more watchable than the tripe that is on TV nowadays.😁

    Edit: just remembered another trio of brilliant Ralph Fiennes films, Sunshine, tale of Hungarian Jewish family, Quiz Show, set in 1950s America, and Strange Days, set on Millenium Eve.

    Last time I saw Sean Bean live, he was at Bramall Lane (Sheffield United’s ground) giving Neil Warnock some Anglo Saxon based instructions.......🤣 They had just been relegated.

    I do have a long lasting admiration of the work of Poliakoff and watch the DVDs of his plays / films repeatedly.

    Can't say that I watch DVD's but I have enjoyed his television drama's. Not to everyone's taste but I always find them interesting because you have to work at the meaning and nothing seems quite as you think.

    I think you have got the wrong one! That looks like Martyn Poliakoff the playwright is Stephen Poliakoff.

    The chase is my favourite.educational and light hearted.Pointless is,to me,absolutely pointless.!

    each to his/her own preferences.I find the chase worth watching and I find pointless to be irritating to say the least.I will not watch Peston as his way of talking to camera annoys me but I will watch re.runs of Fools and horses etc as I find the scripts and acting to be brilliant etc.etc.There is,in fact,very little to justify the cost of a tv licence!Which bit do you not understand?

    Pointless is very educational, I knew very little about the Periodic table before I started to watch the programme!!! I think it a fascinating insight into the  state of general knowledge. Younger people do very well with music but generally don't do so well with politics. Everyone (except me) seems to do well with sport and films!

    sorry,I did not realise that you were looking for drama!I assumed that the title "nothing on the box" was a general observation!If there is nothing worth watching then the tv licence is a rip-off (in my opinion)

    Ok. But in my OP I did write about drama series.

    You also wrote about a quiz programme and I for one had no idea that you were looking for personal recommendations whether for drama or not.

    I thought it to be a general moan about nowt on TV.
