steve, I'm agreeing with you....this sort of arbitrary increase just hacks of customers who remember (or have notes) their stays at regular haunts....

even JVB would notice that sort of rise at his go to site.....wink

I was looking at the price guide for Thirsk racecourse site for a 4 night stay. No problems with price and may well book it if its available but noticed that the Club have gone to the trouble of actually reducing the price at the end of the season for 1 measly night. Is this a marketing trick just so they can show a low "From..." price? Why bother for goodness sake.

Intrigued and having 10 minutes to spare I looked through the Price Guide (available from EG). There are 9 other instances of this happening, all for the last night, yet there are several other sites across the network that close on the same date where no reduction is given.

I think someone at EG is taking the proverbial.

Edit - Incidentally, the guide doesn't show prices for non EHU pitches.

But it's not bad for that area? I've just looked at a few sites near to the club one and one Riverside comes in at £24 pounds max for a couple but charges £3.50 for a child only to 16 and £2 per dog (club site is £1 per child up to 17 and, well you know what the charges for dogs are) so an average family with dog face an extra £9 per night. Additionally if you want access after 11pm you will need a Gate fob hire - £30 (refundable). No online booking either.

Also it is inferior as it is on grass (as far I could tell and IMHO of course). Additionally day visitors are charged at £2 and there is a minimum three nights in high season. Other sites are about the same

So yes perhaps not bad for the superior (OK delete if required) but certainly consistent and known quality (and cleanliness) of the club?

Oh and the speed limit is 10mph which might please some people

But I do think that is acceptable for a club, OK you would expect that from me, but looking at bookings over the summer on various sites a lot of other people think it is OK too, and of course the weekends full thread is also proof?

Maybs, CS, they're all too dear for the area, hence the low turnout. I can afford to pay £28 for a pitch but won't at Malvern. As WTG said, I think, sometimes value for money plays a bigger role.

...but is it chicken or egg.....?

customers (reluctantly?) continuing to pay nigh on £30 a night does nothing to send a message to HQ....who then line up the 2020 price list with the default increase making it £32+

in another thread (Galaxy) way back, someone mentioned (not quite tongue in cheek) default prices of £40 a night for club summer prices, we are definitely heading that way at a rate of knots...

adding 3 or 4 pct to prices that are ever higher, leads to the gap increasing at an ever higher rate..

as WTG posted, it's now 'value' that we look at and the club odffering hasn't changed much in the 10 yrs we've been members...no desire to provide much more than a pitch and a shower/loo, yet prices have spiralled to the level being discussed....

we, too, now have a good look around and will choose CCC, commercial, CL/CS or THS if available....

i agree sites may still be full for the most part, but i still get plenty of (encouraging) emails telling me that there are spaces at X or y and z.

Which is exactly what I want. Not really bothered by shower and loo but will use if available on site

indeed, but still does not answer the big question, why are people going and keep going to places where they say they do not get this value  for money (ie hard to justify the cost) ?

This is not aimed at you

I suspect that for a couple with two kids £29 a night in August is not exorbitant when you look at many other sites.

The £27 is of course August! In general many pay the cost of caravan club sites and presumably do so because they like the standards and the provisions or else one would assume that like some posters have said they would not use them other than as a last resort,

Sorry Corners, old chap, but Gullible is in the dictionary - Concise Oxford 1978 and subsequent editions.

Interesting thread though, been a while since we saw one this good.

That’s exactly the same reasons as we break the long journey south at Malvern for the night. What’s not to understand?

Value for money is all relative.

YRP last year, we paid something like £33 per night. Way above our self set parameter of £19 per night. But, we needed to be in York, we have a MH, it’s far cheaper than any hotel, B&B, we could do a nice walk to the theatre, our dogs were safe back at camp, fast asleep. Good value for money.

Bromyard Downs, an overnighter enroute to South Wales. We arrived at just after 6pm, pitched, dog walk, sleep, wash in morning, back on road for just after 9am. 15 hours on a pitch, £14. Reasonable value for money, great location.

Hurn Lane, last November, one night, pitched up at 7.55pm. Endured two hours of fireworks, no dog walk without driving off site, we were glad to see the back of the place by 9am in the morning, a total of 13 hours on a pitch. For which we paid something like £25-30, I can’t exactly recall, but the lovely Warden actually apologised for how much it cost! Worst decision of the year and very poor value for money from our point of view. Had we been a day later, we would have paid something like a third less. Valuable lesson learned.

certainly not the whole answer by any means, but when we started with the MH, we were given CC membership as a present by pals who were members....we also joined CCC to give us a further choice...

however, for quite a while (until our first foreign trip where we were enlightened) we thought campsite meant being on a club site....

once we found commercials, CL/CS, aires, ACSI, other stopping points we realised there was a world of choice and competition out there.

im sure there are many club members who enjoy vanning but are starting to be affected by prices yet are a bit apprehensive about choosing a non club site....so they grin and bear it (the price not the sitewink)

a good answer, but I've never paid for something I didn't think was good value, ok something substantial costing over a fiversmile

Perhaps, maybe... there are such people about but I didn't have AD as a grin and bear it sort?

I am equally sure that there are many 'vanners who have tried different site options and frequently choose CC sites. There are many folk with different wants.

There undoubtedly will be a few, however many will have come to caravanning from tenting. After 30 years plus of staying on various sites both home and abroad. We were very aware of the vast variety of sites available, it's just that the CC sites, particularly with a caravan, suited us. I am sure this will apply to many who have taken this route.

In this country we have predominantly used them for the last 14 years. As we move onto a MH I am sure we will try others, however the CC will remain a popular choice if there is a site in the right location.

I've definitely paid more than I thought reasonable on the odd occasion simply because it was where I wished to be and I did not fancy the alternatives. Case in point http://the-willows-abersoch.co.uk/

We caravanned for several years without belonging to a club. There were site guides around even back in those days before the internet so it wasn’t difficult to find sites. Then we joined C&CC to give us a better choice of sites and 30 years later joined this club to further improve our choices.

Therefore, we are capable of finding whichever type of site we fancy and, if we use a CAMC site, it’s in the full knowledge that others are available. Most times, in my opinion, the CAMC sites give the better experience and, as with most things in life, you tend to get what you pay for.

Prices on the Delux pitches look similar to service pitches at Chatsworth  and not dramatically more than service pitches at other CC sites. If the site is as good as it looks, I would be happy with the value, using our caravan.
