Free WIFI from CCC

all the cafes and eating places all had large signs proclaiming free wi-fi. Do people really base where to go to eat on this?
Likewise I've seen local buses with free wi-fi in big letters on the outside as somehow it's a big selling point.
Jings - it will be free toilets next!

for those that take long bus rides....and many do....having wifi just gives another option with which to while away the boredom of the trip.
we 'did' the service bus to Bristol a while back, and it had wifi....it's almost a two hour trip from home.
we sometimes use the 'flyer' services into London, again wifi...along with coffee, tea and snacks...with some tickets the drink is free, but the wifi is free for everyone.
its just another way to improve the service offering, no one is suggesting one gets on a bus just for the wifi.....
...but two similar services (busses, campsites) offering similar provision (location) but one has free wifi and the other doesn't.....might steer a customer to me and not the other...
just like bistros (or pools, bars, restaurants) might...

Most campers seem to have their Wi Fi needs covered with the use of mobile broadband modules and their computers tethered to phones, so I see free Wi Fi on the two club sites as an ever underused facility - I would rather see the Wi Fi repeaters replaced with closed circuit television monitors to catch the bad guys.

Most hotels and other Lesuire businesses offer free wifi so why not on a campsite? The 'club' is just a business with customers, just the same. People sort of expect some wifi cover now, not the standard to download films etc but at least to check emails and go on a few websites.

I have just received an email from the C&CC in which they state the current system will remain as it is except that now there is no charge. So on sites where they have a site wide WiFi, that can still be used as before. So they are not changing to single hotspots. Does this put the CMC in a dilemma?

I assume there is a cost to providing 'free' wifi? So if the club decides to do this where will this come from? Higher fees, or from somewhere?
Interestingly two post above show opposite views and needs
personally I don't have a preference either way as my mobile data serves me well enough, and you can access the club's website free anyway, but if pushed I would like to see money spent on better things, but the higher cost moaners might complain more?

why should it put the club in a dilemma? because it may fear it will lose out on bookings? people preferring to go to the CCC rather than the club, Is that what you mean?
Personally I think rational people will choose a site, club or not, based on other things, Wifi might be in there but down the list.

There is very little cost in providing free wifi when the routers/bridge are already there for another purpose, or have been "paid for" in the accounts by the write-down of assets.
Those of you who get their broadband from BT are probably aware of the BT-Fon deal whereby if one agrees to enable the seperate public channel on your own wifi router/bridge then one gets to use the tens of thousands of other ones through the UK and Europe.
A lot of the commercial instalations that use BT have this extra channel enabled, and it drives my girlfriend mad that my tablet is often logged-on and working before she has found out the name of the public wifi in that location, and its password. The tablet often hops from one to another as I drive through built up areas, and on some sites I've been able to use the Fon channel from a nearby house.
What I think is happening with the C&CC is that equipment is now paid for and they don't need to justify a charge for it. It may even save them money in wardens' time not being spent on giving out passwords and discussing queries. However, what happens when equipment fails? Unless it is the main bridge to their Internet connection I suspect that it will just quietly be switched off.

That’s interesting. I'm wondering if C&CC are rethinking things. For instance, I’ve just booked a chain of sites with them because there are no CAMC sites in the areas and the booking system, which I’ve oft moaned about, let me simply go from booking one site to another and also allowed me to book single nights on each site. There was no minimum booking period. Maybe I just struck lucky.
The downside was paying in full upfront but the dearest site I booked was still sub £20 in June with the old folks discount.

yes perhaps it is they who are in a dilemma not the club?

yes the cost of keeping things operational must be an ongoing cost?

Free, it is not. The cost has to be covered somewhere such as pitch fees and/or membership fees.

But a hotel or whatever has a smaller footprint than a large caravan site with 200+ pitches, so some form of technology is needed to get the wifi signal to everyone, that will cost money to install.
And the same logic could be said that as hotels have a tv in every room, should the club offer a tv set to all pitches?

Without knowing the reasons behind the decision it is difficult to know what has driven it? The C&CC have never seem to have mentioned the cost of installation as a reason to charge for WiFi unlike the CMC. Whilst this Club have always talked about the large amounts of money invested in internet services the C&CC have not as far as I know, and I am a member of both. The C&CC system seems to work as well as the CMC system and in some cases better. Perhaps, as illustrated in this thread, more and more people are using their own data rather than buying data in the form of WiFi from the C&CC they have seen diminishing returns on charging and feel there is something to be gained from doing away with the charge? What we have never been told is the volume of members actually using the service on CMC sites. If it's high then continuing to charge is justified.

What I mean is, does it put the CMC at a competitive disadvantage? Now free WiFi on its own probably not. However if you look at the package offered to C&CC members, especially those of a certain age there could be enough advantages in total to persuade someone to book a C&CC site in preference to a CMC site. The age discount will be an attraction to many, the ability to book a hardstanding pitch will be useful to many and I suppose free WiFi would just be icing on the cake. Currently the major advantage of the CMC, apart from having many more sites, is that you can book deposit free. However if that were to change, as rumoured by some, part of that advantage would be cancelled out. My choice of site is usually down to location and there are several locations around the country where I could elect to use either Club. We are going to Cambridge soon where both Clubs have a site. Of the two I prefer the open nature of the C&CC site but unfortunately it is not open when we want to go. Had it been later in the year they are in direct competition for my custom.

As I've commented in the past, I don't think it will be long until there is no difference, as they will have amalgamated the site networks.

as first preference for me every time

the age discount and booking a HS have been there a longish time and do not seem to have affected CAMC bookings, probably because of the quality difference for caravans/MH.

good post (you really DD?)

As we are members of both clubs and tend to take a fair amount of holidays abroad we moved to a mifi a few years ago, so far its been a good decision.
Why pay to use below par wifi when for the same cost or less you can have a good connection.

quick aside, TG, are you back from L? I'll drop you a line....
