Planning on visiting the Black Forest for a few days early June. Never been to this area before. Can anyone recommend any  good sites with local transport links.

A lot of sites in that area include the use of public transport within the site fees, usually via a slightly higher tourist tax but if you make use of the transport it saves a lot of money.

We stayed at trend camping wolfach  couple of times.  Free train within the Black Forest area with the station 10 minutes walk away.  Lovely family owned site with excellent facilities

Some great Stellplatz in Germany, we stayed at Schluchsee over looking the lake in November, I would think it would be lovely in summer.

We are heading the same way around the same time. Our paths may cross. Is your avatar a good likeness?

This was the last site we stayed at in the Black Forest http://www.davidklyne.co.uk/regenbogen_camp.html Easy walk into the town and railway station, bus stop near the rear gate of the site. Supermarkets at either end of site!!!

We stayed at Camping Munstertal south of Freiburg. Marvellous site with excellent facilities and restaurant. Train station at the entrance to Freiburg. The site wasn't the cheapest but for location and facilities I would certainly use it again. Also good walks from the site either lowland or hill walking

    David,

Is this the same site as Campingpark Bad Liebenzell (ACSI)?

We are looking to stay in the area and need somewhere that we can walk to town/railway station as we prefer not to drive the motorhome off pitch when we are staying in an area.

It must be the same as as far as I know there is only on campsite in Bad Liebenzell. I think Regenbogen might refer to a group of campsites. The tourist tax includes local transport that extends for some distance from the site. Calw is not far away by train and has an interesting centre. Our visit to Bad Liebenzell is recorded in this Blog if it helps. http://www.davidklyne.co.uk/neither_here_nor_there.html

In the past we have used Camping Belchenblick at Standen, South of Freiberg.  I think it may have changed hands fairly recently, so it may be different these days.  Some of the pitches are on the small side, but I understand this is not uncommon on some sites in Germany.  I always tend to ring or book to make sure I ask for a large pitch.

We have stayed there a couple of times over the years. Perhaps the new owners won't be quite as rigid as the original owners? The site had one of the longest lunchtime closures on a site that I have come across. Having said that its an excellent location and the town of Staufen is quite attractive.

Thanks. Will add that one to the list. A small pitch is not a problem with the motorhome but we would never, ever, book a site!

You are not alone in not booking a site, hitchglitch.  Many don't.

Years ago, we hadn't used to book either.  As we go mainly during the main season and go to the main touristy areas, we tend to book these days.  One year we had to go from one site to another to find a pitch in coastal Provence - not what we really wanted after a long journey - so we started by booking just one or two sites.  These days we tend to book the majority.  It works for us as we usually know exactly where we are going and when.

On the Med. coast booking is pretty much essential even in June and agree that if you want a particular pitch then booking may make sense. If we like a place we will often take whatever is available then move to a better pitch next morning as people move out. Arrived at a site in Provence last year at 11.30 am and got the last available pitch. Had to wait until 12.00 as the Germans occupying it stretched their checkout to the limit!

We do the same as hitchglitch. We'll take the first available pitch and then move, if necessary, a day or two later to one that we fancy. Unless one has been to the campsite before and knows what to expect, I think booking ahead can be risky. We've arrived at many a campsite where we've said one night is about as much as we can take, despite good reviews from other people.

On top of that I've come across many campsites that will accept bookings, but refuse to take requests for a particular pitch into account. That can be annoying, especially when a campsite has an assortment of pitches, some of which are really nice, others that I wouldn't touch with a barge pole.

"The pitch" never bothers me much. I travel to visit places I want to see.

Thank you. Where are you thinking of for 'pastures new'? IF, and it hasn't been decided, we go abroad this year we are thinking of along the Rhine valley and northern part of the Romantic Road then into Alsace which will be pastures new for us.

Another vote for Camping Des Trois Chateaux Eguishiem.

Does get busy so may need to ring ahead. Pretty full by lunchtime so not much choice of pitch but as has been said before get on for first night then move pitch next day.
