What software are you running, Steve? Mine is iOS 12.1.1 but yours looks a bit different.

The phone acts slightly differently from the Pad, of course, but your older software explains the difference on the Pad.

Have you tried downloading ios12 by connecting your iPad to a pc Steve. Worked with my old one.

Steve, my phone is on 12.1.3 as well. This is Easy's link opening a separate window which will close when I use the back arrow at the bottom of the screen and it returns me to CT from whence I came.

Just checked the phone TW. It seems vagaries of CT is correct. It does give a back arrow. Which takes me back to CT as long as I don't explore the link. If I do then it no longer works and I have to close it.
It seems there is little hope of getting much consistency between devices, if similar ones with different versions of IOS handle things so differently
Not tried doing what you suggest TDL, I don't know if I dare. It is 6 years old and I hope to get another one or two before I replace it. Plus one of my Apps won't work in anything above 10.
Edit
Posted at the same time TW. That's the picture I get as well.

We cross posted, Steve. I think the issue you have is not so much with CT but is down to running older software on your Pad. Mine is perfectly consistent, albeit that the phone software always works slightly differently from the Pad due to the constraints of size and so on.

ET, the ‘smart’ in smart tv means it can interact with the internet & other smart devices it doesn’t mean it looks ‘nice & clean’👍🏻😊

Sorry☹️, it was your allergy to TV’s that had me convinced that smart to you will be the opposite of smart to the rest of us😬. It’s obviously your Lady that’s TV savvy then👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻

When I post a link into a post, what I do is this. Whilst still composing the post I highlight the link and then go to the link button in the tool bar. This opens the insert/edit link dialog box.(previously illustrated by Steve) The last option is to open the link in a new tab. The default is no so you have to click on the little arrow and select yes. It is perfect possible to copy and paste a link but without editing but it won't open in a new tab. By all means have another go and I will have a look at it to see where it might have gone wrong or where it has gone right!

I will give DKs method a go

seems a lot of faffing about compared with other method.

Can’t tell any different apart from having to open up the link box and click on yes box. Ain’t sure what all the fuss is about, sorry.

It is not my method by the way! It was how the forum was designed so it is the correct method for adding links to this forum! What has happened is that people have discovered that short cuts can be cut and pasted. However what cutting and pasting won't do is open the link in a new window. One example of why this would be useful. You have just posted a link. If it has been set to open in a new window I can open your link and switch between your comment on Club Together and the campsite you have linked to which would make it easier for me to ask you further questions whilst searching for information about the campsite. It is also likely that when you open a link posted in a thread you often look at several pages so using the back button to get back to CT becomes far more time consuming than adding the link correctly in the first place?

Apologies DK, I should have said “CT method”. After that I am a bit lost I am afraid in terms of looking between windows. I will try and remember to use link method if it helps. I didn’t realise it made any difference.
