B4RN https://b4rn.org.uk/ = Broadband for the rural north. It’s a non profit making community project which started in Melling near Lancaster. There are several communities for different areas. We are part of B4SW  http://www.b4sw.uk/. Broadband for South Westmorland; three parishes that have raised enough money through investors, loans and grants to get where we are now. The main digging is done by volunteers and landowners have given the wayleaves. The fibre comes in ducts right  to the house, where it is blown through the wall into a router. The fastest speeds are possible with an Ethernet connection to a PC etc (about 980 mbs download and upload), but even wireless in a house with thick stone walls is a vast improvement on standard BT Infinity etc.

Its taken three years to get to almost the end our project and we’ve a Parish Party planned for next month.

The monthly cost is less than we paid BT.

And now we use a house phone that is connected to the internet, rather than BT’s wires. VOIP = voice over internet protocol. We pay a monthly fee, again much less than we paid BT.

Previously some parts of our parish had speeds worse than ADSL.

    Sorry for the long waffle!

Are you going to move your domain name away from BT as well? I use a web hosting company for mine. I did previously use both BT and Plusnet when they used to give you a limited amount of webspace but soon I outgrew the space available.

Not for the moment - our website is hosted with them, so we will stay put for now. I created the website with Frontpage (now very out of date), and until I do it all again with an online service like Wix etc I haven't the urge to change. We also have another domain (with BT but created with Wix, managed by my daughter in law)

Goldie, would you mind if I passed on the web site details to my cousin on the farm in NZ, you run such contrasting dairy farms I think they'd like to read about it! smile

I still use Frontpage for a bit of my website but mainly Expression Web although even that is a bit old hat now! But it seems to work for me. I use Fasthosts as they offer a fair amount of space for a reasonable price. Not heard of Wix but had a look at what they offer and it is interesting.

We’re still in Cornwall, and the sun is still shining! Another lovely day, stroll through Fowey via Readymoney Cove, and the dog chariot worked a treat! Going to be another stunning sunset this evening. laughing

Cycled along the Kennet & Avon to Devizes via the Caen Hill flight of locks. A beautiful day followed by a delightful pink sky.

A busy day getting four cows ready for a Dairy Shorthorn sale tomorrow. They're beautified and ready to go - Beeston Castle Auction if you're in the area. So the alarm is set for 04:00!

Meanwhile, we're dashing into town to see Peggy Seeger. I love her shows, we always come away feeling better than when we went in.

Hope you enjoy your night out Goldie.

We had the offer of free theatre tickets today for our local literary festival, had a choice, so have plumped for Sam Willis and James Daybell and "Histories of the Unexpected"...no idea what to "expect" but will give it a go.  smile

    Lovely day here to today.

More gardening this morning, we did get into the back corner. OH got the leaf buster out and cleared them away for me to get in and weed. Front garden now looking respectable again. I still ache all over but it has to be done as this weather is not going to last for much longer, then it will be to cold to do anything outdoors. I don't mind the cold but its not easy to garden when the ground is frozen solid.surprised

Tomorrow we will have to go into town, its Mum's 92nd  birthday on Friday, I need to find a present for her, not an easy task. Shops are full of Christmas stuff, haven't given it a thought until now.

We were going to the cinema tonight but changed our mind as both feeling to tired, film still on next week so will go then. We have 2 for 1 on Tues/Wed for cinema and meals, cant tell OH is a Scot can you laughinglaughinglaughing

After a good day yesterday meeting friends old and new, we left Cornwall and moved on to Devon and am now set up at the CC's Stover Site. Another beautiful shorts, t-shirt and sandals day, ideal for a wander round the country park after lunch.

Contrary to all the speculation about M/H's taking over club sites, here there are only 5 M/Hs on site compared to 35 or so caravans, and a couple of those appear to be on seasonal pitches.

Hope all that are going to shows thoroughly enjoy themselves, and I hope that you get good prices for your cows tomorrow Goldie.

Last night in the van, the time has absolutely flown by. The weather has been pretty much perfect, the wildlife visible, the beer on tap, what more could I ask for.  You really can’t beat the U.K. when it’s like this, blue sky and multi coloured leaves.

Beautiful day  here today.  Every leaf in the area seems to have been blown into our front garden and side drive in the wind yesterday so have been clearing those up as well as sorting out our winter woollies for our trip to N. Ireland at the  weekend. We went to see a live screening of Funny Girl at our local theatre this evening. What a fabulous show. Sheridan Smith is  amazing. I love live screenings.  So good to have the opportunity to see top shows locally. I hope everyone else enjoyed their evenings out.

Grey  and  damp  day  up  here  in  the County  Palatine,  alas.    Not  cold  yet  but  that's  supposed  to  be here  in  24  hours  or  so  --  nasty  blue  area  on  the  TV forecast frown.  No  nice  light  thro'  the  trees, JVB,  the  large  willow  across  the  road  had  a  good  trim  this  spring   and  yesterday  it  got  the  "Big Chop".  7  foot  fence  blocks  the  view  so  cannot  yet  see  if  its  been  coppiced  or  taken  right  down to  root  level.  What  ever  they  have  done  they'll  never  get  all  its  roots  out -  don't  think  the  council  would  like  the  road  being  dug  up  surprised

Not so bright here today but still ok to work outdoors, so 1 of the beds in the back garden was tackled this morning. I gave the big Buddleia a half way chop to stop it getting rocked with the winter winds. Then a tidy round of the rest of the bed loads of leaves from the Buddleia and the 5 Silver Birch trees we have in the back garden. Only got 2 more beds to do and the big border along the back of the house. Once its all done we can think about going away again laughinglaughing

We both got our Flu jabs this morning, we have to go to the GP's surgery up here can't get them done at the Pharmacy unless you are paying for them. The surgery was busy but they had 3 nurses on and each took a different age group so we only had a 25 minute wait. Unfortunately I have to go back again next week as I have to get the Pneumococcal, they were only doing Flu jabs today frown

This afternoon we went out to get something for Mum's birthday  got a variety of things which I think she will like smile also got a small cake.

Happy birthday to your Mum TG! I am busy knitting some fingerless handwarmers for mine!

Another lovely day here in Cornwall, our last sadly. Gorgeous afternoon out with MH down at Caerhays/Porthluney Beach. This is where a smaller MH comes into its own, down some tight lanes, but park up right on the beach side, lovely picnic, stunning views and a paddle!

We start to head North tomorrow, but Tavistock will be our main aim, with a CL somewhere in Okehampton area, so we can drive over Dartmoor. Our aim is to avoid the M5, but use other roads where we can and head up to Cleeve Abbey and Berkeley, then on into Cotswolds.

Titter of the day was a huge articulated lorry stuck just outside Par Docks, way too high for low bridge! Not English of course, nuisance for locals though!wink

A fine day in S.E.Dartmoor, but there was a cool wind blowing for some of the time, warm in the sun though. We drove up to Haytor Moor and did a circular walk taking in all the tops and quarries, ending with the short scramble onto the top of Haytor Rock its-self.  Lots of families out together which was good to see.

Have a safe trip up to Okehampton, tda.

Glad that you managed to get your flu jabs, TG. We'll have to arrange to get ours done when we get back home in mid November....hope they haven't run out of stock by then.

    TG

We had a speaker from a nursery at one of our pensioner meetings who said the if you cut it down to near ground level you will get larger flowers. What I can't remember is whether that should be the spring or autumn! At least cutting it down now won't have all the seeds blowing everywhere. Wish my neighbour would take a leaf out of your book as they all blow into our garden and I spend the next year pulling up seedlings!!!

We give ours a trim about now, again really to protect it and the stuff around it from the winds, then a hard pruning - cut off about the top 3/4 at about end of February. Seems to work pretty well! smile

Goldie sounded like a good price 😉. Lots of the diary cows in NZ are very spare and I thought they looked underfed 😲. But looking at your girl maybe it's the breed? I'm sure yours are properly cared for otherwise they wouldn't be prize winners 😂. I've been used to freesians and Holstein which appeared to be better covered. I expect she'd be pleased to be milked after the ring. Your milk or the new owners?

David, I was advised to take it down to about half the height at this time of year to stop it getting rocked with the high winds we get. If I was to leave it and it did loosen it when we get the snow and deep frost it can then get into the roots and cause it to die.

I then take it down to about a 2 ft in the spring time before we go away, we do get very big heads on it, it was about 9ft high before chopping it today.
