Going to Spain for the winter - worried about gas
If you're going to Spain for a long winter holiday, and worried about exchanging gas cylinders or running out of gas, changing regulators, etc. , then I've discovered that you can get Spanish gas cylinders in this country from a Yorkshire motorhome dealership.
My last post about cheap motorhome hire was removed from the forum because I think it was considered advertising, so I can't provide a link to the company. If anyone wants details you'll have to email me on valdaathome@gmail. com.

Just make sure any gas bottles you buy are from the big two of Repsol or Cepsa, some of the other companies are regional but these two are sold by all ferreteria's, petrol stations and supermarkets throughout Spain. You may also find it cheaper if you wait till you get here to buy cylinders, regulators and pig-tails and the local Ferreteria's will give you the best advise and will deliver and sometimes fit.

So did I, which was why I posted a link to a Yokshire motorhome company offering very reasonably priced hire (not the same Yorkshire company as the one offering gas bottles). However, it was removed from the forum even after a few other people had commented upon it.

Perhaps it was because the advertiser offered membership of a different club!

I have just looked at your original post about motorhome hire. I don't know who moved it but in a way I can understand why because it did seem like a long advertisement for the company concerned. I think had you just made a post about good value motorhome hire and a link it might well still be where you posted it? I see no problem with you posting a link to the gas cylinder as its information that might be useful to people travelling to Spain. None of the posts about Safefill or Gaslow have been removed.

obtaining sufficient gas for a long term stay in Spain can be managed in several ways.....
getting a cylinder (and pigtail/adaptor) prior to departure (as mentioned by Val) and exchanging as and when, at the many outlets over there
obtaining same from local ferreterias as mentioned by Phil
getting any long term site to provide local cylinder at your van and exchange when required
use refillable system with appropriate adaptors...
i have a combination of two of the above.....a refillable 11kg Gaslow and a space in the same locker for a large Repsol/Cepsa bottle with pigtail and Jumbo adaptor already in place.
just gives me more options.
i could also make use of a site provided bottle if staying put for a bit..
might even get a bottle from Val's tip....
so, as my old boss used to say, more than one way to skin a carrot.

I would have thought that all the current moderators probably know that I'm an 'ex-champion (for what it's worth) and that someone reading my original post, would realise that I wouldn't post 'an advert' - just a recommendation.

Val I don't know the circumstances in which it was hidden but as I said it did look very much like an advert and in such circumstances who posted doesn't really change the situation however well meaning.

In theory this is true but this is Spain, just use the campsite address at the local Ferreteria's or even the campsite itself may sell you one, nothing is impossible where money is concerned.
Not brought one recently but contract costs around 20e and then the price of gas which is 16e at the moment so around 35 to 40 for start up.

I'm assuming they're full but couldn't see any prices (including contract?) on the linked webpage.
ebay usually has a couple of empty ones which you just exchange when you get there.

You don't have to have an address in Spain to buy gas. However you do need a bottle-2 ways you can do it-go to a BP garage & buy Cepsa and they will register you at a campsite or even easier go to a Rastro (sort of 2nd hand shop/car boot) and they will sell you an empty Repsol or Cepsa for around €8/10 euros. Then just take it to the camp shop and exchange it or any garage/gas shop that matches your bottle.
You can buy the Spanish adapter pipe which attaches to the Spanish Bottle & English Piping system for about €25 and away you go. Do not buy a Spanish regulator as this will impede the gas supply and your appliances won't work properly-you only need the adaptor.
I use Cepsa Propane and 11kg is €15-lot cheaper than Calor! I usually bring 2 full ones back with me to use in UK during the summer and hopefully they last!

To buy your first bottle (officially) you need a Spanish address. For those worriers (and there are a lot in the CaMC) it would seem to make sense to be equipped before setting off, rather than worrying about finding a second hand shop on arrival or where and when you can source a bottle of gas. This is one easy way they could buy their first bottle, all in English, and set off knowing that they won't have problems. Several people have said 'what a great idea and thank you' in emails to me - often they are first-timers who aren't quite as 'in the know' as those who've been many times.

Whilst cheaper than Calor (not difficult) it is still dearer than topping up a refillable system.
