Travelling to Spain for the winter

We are travelling with our caravan to Benidorm in October for the winter,  We are using the Plymouth to Santander ferry.  Totally new to this.  Any tips on routes, general tips and stopover recommendations would be very much appreciated.  Thank you.

    Good choice of ferry. It's on the best ship and it arrives in Spain at 1215 pm.,  which allows time to move on that day,  unlike the sailings with an evening arrival which can cause travel problems if delayed. Bon voyage.

    A couple of hour's drive east of Santander is Zarautz which has a very good campsite (its in the ACSI book). From there you can take the motorway across Spain via Zaragoza and on to the A23 to Valencia. From there it is a short run down the AP7 to Benidorm. There are not many sites when crossing Spain so pick your route carefully. The ACSI book is invaluable.

    Hi Christine

    I do this route at least five times a year and my opinion would be to steer clear of Zaragoza municipal which is a bit of dump and expensive as well, I have now found this site Campsite Bardenas in Villafranca (Navarre) which is now in ACSI at 19e and a really nice site with restaurant. Depending on how far you drive each day you may need another stop over in the Valencia area,  I would suggest Altomira at Navajas or Camper stop Betera both in ACSI, have you booked your site in Benidorm because you will need to they will be full from end of October.

    I am following this thread as also interested in winter sun! Have been abroad with motorhome but not caravan, which we now have. When you stop over on route for one night do you unhitch the caravan and car?

    We try not to unhitch, but the layout of the site, or the size of the pitch,  or the slope, or the need to drive out to supermarket or petrol station usually means we have to.

    A previous forum member mentioned the site at Bardenas as an alternative to Zaragoza.   I stayed there last November on my meander south.   It's a lovely site and if you can afford the time you should visit the Bardenas desert which is only about 15 miles from the site.   It's a fantastic place - another world.   See my picture.   I also stopped at Zaragoza and IMO it's an OK site but very expensive for what it offers.   From there I went to visit Belchite - the town that Hitler helped Franco to murder so many people.   The town remains just as the Luftwaffe left it in 1936.   You can see the result in my blog.
