Krk or Cres ?
We’re planning to spend a few nights in Croatia when we leave Italy in a couple of weeks time. We’ve previously visited the Istrain coast so this time we’re looking at the islands of Krk or Cres. Recommendations for sites and the adavantages of one island over the other would be appreciated. We enjoy cycling, walking and would like to be within easy reach of small towns or villages.

As you know, Cres and Krk are the principal towns on the islands (Otok) of Cres and Krk. The former is reached by ferry, the latter by toll bridge. For Cres we would recommend Camping Kovacine, and for Krk Camping Jezevac.
Both campsites are large with 1,000 plus pitches; however, in September only those nearest the sea are occupied. Those on the shoreline will have been booked by 'regulars' from Austria and Germany. You can still get a pitch with a seaview. The children will have gone , but there will be a lot of dogs!
A word of warning! Reception for both sites is about half a mile from the sea. You will be offered pitches to choose from before you bring your van on to the site. It's quite a trek down and back hoping that the one you select hasn't been taken in the meantime.
Both site are within easy walking distance of the town. You can cycle along the prom to Cres, but Krk is even closer. Cycling off site is another matter. The roads are narrow and mountainous in places.
Cres is our favourite!

I can only echo what has been written by ChasnCath - indeed, it was their postcards which inspired me to go to Cres!
We stayed at Camping Slatina - another large site and had a sea-front pitch which was stunning. Shower facilities superb and easy to cycle into the next village
I would also recommend having a stopover for a night at Osor, before moving south onto the Island of Losinj (it's joined to Cres by a 15m swing bridge) The villages of Mali and Veli Losinj are stunning and there's a choice of campsites

Thank you everyone for your valuable advice. Based on the above we may do a “mini two centre” visit to both Krk and Cres.
I’ll let you know how we get on. Thanks again, Dave N

As promised, here is an update on our “mini two centre” visit to Krk. I’m afraid we didn’t get to Cres, we’ll save that for another year. However, we did stay in two locations on Krk; Krk Resort Camping was just about the most luxurious campsite (facilities wise) of any we’ve ever stayed on. The pitches were immaculately maintained, the restaurant was excellent and everyone was very friendly. The short walk into the town was delightful. On a recommendation from an Austrian friend we then visited Camping Skrila in Stara Baska, a short journey south from Krk town.
Camping Skrila is in a beautiful setting in a very quiet part of the island. Not so good for young children since there is no pool or play area but the setting was stunning.
Thanks again for all your advice, we thoroughly enjoyed our Croatian holiday.
