Just returned from our 15 day visit to France. The vet in Carnac informed us about the Caterpillars which are deadly to Dogs. He shown us pics on his computer and the damage they can do is really upsetting. If a dog touches one the damage could be shocking. He did say what time of the year to watch out for them but we are not sure if he said April to June or dec to April. Anyone who is worried go online and check.

Didn't see any when we were there but then, not being a dog-owner, I'm not on high alert. We used to get them all the time when I had my apartment near Santa Pola on the Costa Blanca.

Had a colleague needed hospital treatment after changing a tyre. They do get squashed in huge numbers and if you change a tyre and roll the removed one through your hands (as we all do) then the spines and toxic bits get into your skin. Nasty.

Particularly in South of France, Italy, Spain you need to be careful if you change a tyre, wear gloves, our continental cousins are aware and have disposables with the spare wheel.

Dogs are very prone to squashing them underfoot and then licking the needles and toxins, again nasty.

The one's that are the most worst that we found in Spain build there nest in pine trees and when they leave the nest they all follow in a long string about two to three foot long. The nest is a white cone shape about a foot long. We had a string of them on our pitch in Spain and when I got them up with a brush and paper bag they shoot tiny needles at you that sting for hours after.  We had our dog with us and had to watch out for her when out walking.
