Not stopping but would like to pay to use showers

Hi, we have just bought our first motorhome after enjoying a 3 week trip around NZ in one. I am interested to know if it is possible to pay to use club site facilities if we are not staying overnight. NZ sites were more that willing to allow this for a reasonable fee. We are not too keen to be on busy sites in high season prefering to be 'wild' I think it is called. But I don't think I like the idea of not being able to have a decent shower (motorhome has a shower but we haven't tried it yet). I appologise if we appear snobby or antisocial but we both have stressful jobs and just want a bit of peace and quiet.  smile

    The CC don't.....

    The "Friendly Club" does.

    (Camping & Caravan Club).

It's a no to your question with the CAMC.

Perhaps a CL site with shower facility would suit you.

Unfortunately you won't be able to do that on club sites. But there are many, many CLS which have good shower facilities and would still offer peace and quiet. smile

as above, the UK doesn't do 'MH flexible' it does caravan fairly inflexible..

just popping in somewhere for a shower is a totally normal thing to do on French campsites that also have an 'aire' on site....

youd think, being a member of a camping organisation like cc would be the entry to the sensible system you seek, but the CC has gone all political and suggests having a shower at one of their sites means you must be wild camping and are causing nuisance and destruction all over the countryside.....of course you're not, you just want a shower and are happy to pay for it.....still no deal I'm afraid.

if I were you I'd test out the shower in the van, it might be perfectly servicable....

good luck, but the CC just isn't the organisation to turn to, to follow sensible ideas from other countries or organisations....

Agreed. You could even fall foul of by-laws by wildcamping.

Check out CLs as I think they could provide what you need.

There are a lot of people breaking bylaws with the amount of people wild camping in North Norfolk this weekend.  MH were like a rash, all over the place.  laughing

Might it be an idea to try the motorhome shower as it might solve some of your problems? We use ours all the time and we stay on sites. As suggested up thread CL's with facilities might well be you best option. At a push don't motorway service areas have showers for truckers? No idea how you go about using them but they may included in the overnight parking fee. Having said that I think I would prefer to have a night on a nice campsite rather than a motorway service area. I have some sympathy with the CMC not offering such a service as their sites are very busy at particular times of day so even if they did it would be under restricted access for parts of the day. Also not many sites have very much in the way of parking. Perhaps BB is right that the club don't want to encourage wild camping. It would be interesting to know how often the facilities are used on C&CC sites that allow it?

You can get showers for a small fee in most Leisure centres in England &  Wales. In Scotland even village halls provide them in rural areas. Not tied to sites to keep clean.

Out of interest, do C&CC sites permit the use of showers? I know that they allow MHs to stopped off and use the service points, which are very often at or near the entrance to sites but I wasn't aware that shower/toilet facilities were also offered.

It used to be the case that C&CC allowed use of all their facilities - showers, laundry, water etc for the given time. I assume it’s still the same arrangement.

Yes they do, the fee is for a limited time and use of facilities. Mind you, as on all campsites you'd need to get the timing right due to cleaning times etc. The C&CC are also using more facility door  codes due to wild campers helping themselves. As already suggested CLs or CSs might offer a solution for peaceful stop overs, with some research done first. smile

It's going to be a lucky dip booking a CL if you're looking for a decent shower.

I suppose there must be a CL out there with decent showers, and someone will be along to name them, but every CL we've ever tried has no or rubbish showers....

Obviously I'm not a MHer but if you're "off grid" for any length of time, how do you dispose of grey waste and toilet?

    I'm sure you could M.

But we tried a few over the years and as said, non existent or rubbish.....

I haven't got the time or the inclination now to go scratting around in a farmyard hoping there may be a half decent shower to perhaps save eight or ten quid...

I want a full fat site with gleaming ablution blocks, crisp hardstandings, manicured grass, smiling warden & lights on all night.....

And I'm prepared to pay for it........

    wink

Sorry all this talk of wild camping and showers do not make sense, when I go wild camping the fly's keep away, the most I have done is six days no washing or change of clothes dunk in a river if you have to. Wild camping in a motor home does not make sense.😎

I wonder if the user of a motor caravan could turn up at a site that had a vacant pitch; book in and pay for the minimum period (until noon the next day, usually); pitch up (sort of) and get the electrics charging; go of for a shave, a shower, and any other "s" activity they fancied; drive around and do the tanky things underneath; and then just drive off the site and away into the wild.

The warden might even be able to re-let that pitch later in the same day.

You could book a pitch, have a shower and then leave, but at Club Site prices it will be a very expensive shower!

In the days when most caravans and camper vans didn't have a proper bathroom folks coped in a variety of ways depending on their needs. Some used sites with facilities, some did the daily strip wash, some did the dip in sea or a clean(ish) river. Some, always kept down wind, relied extensively on wet wipes and Lynx!

I would try out your shower and see how you go. There are some very nice CLs out there with all facilities, but they will probably be busier than the remote no facility ones. Only you can decide what you want.

We don’t find the shower in the motorhome any good which is mainly why we don’t use Aires (not the only reasons). There are places in the UK where you can get a shower but finding somewhere to park could be the biggest problem. Try France; most Autoroute full services have shower facilities (for the lorry drivers).

Nothing wrong with wild camping in a M/Home if you are sensible. I work on the principle " leave as if you had not been there". I don't think anyone is advocating lengthy stays. I find the leisure batteries, toilet, fresh water lasts 3 days or so. So no dumping of waste or litter.

our fresh and grey tanks last for around 5-6 days even when showering in the van...

toilet cassette is likely to need emptying after 3 days...

some MHers carry two cassettes for this very purpose....

But what then? After say 6 days, you've run out of fresh water, need to empty grey water and 2 toilet cassettes, one of which has been sitting round for 3 days! Do you then look for a "site"? (Obviously, I'm talking UK, here!) wink

Anyway, debnian, has any of this helped? What are your thoughts now? Join C&CC, use CLS,  pay for a night at a "proper" site? It'd be good to know if any of our advice has helped. smile
