Agreed, that calls on keeping us informed and involved, another sensible management tool in the armoury of those on the ground, unusual or challenging conditions call for compromise, consultation and understanding from all of us. Afterall, we are renown for our ability to help each other, aren't we?

However, what I'm suggesting is that if there are two perfectly good hard standing pitches but one is better accessed by the caravaner rather than the motorhomer due to the conditions of the 'approach' to it then managing that predicament would be helpful to all. Both the caravaner and motorhomer would be accommodated perfectly well and both would enjoy their stay in the knowledge that neither will suffer the wrath of the conditions. Win, win in my book, that scenario probably wouldn't need prior consultation, just understanding, would it?

That's perfectly OK. But what if one pitch was HS and the other grass? If I arrived first with my caravan I would be annoyed if the warden said "sorry you can't have that as a MH is due in". IMHO it's tough for the MH.
It amazes me that we can choose a service or non service pitch, an awning or non awning pitch and even, on some sites, a pitch without electricity yet we can't choose HS or grass because it confused some members! I'm sure it wouldn't be confusing if it was rolled out nationally rather than on just the small number of sites it was tested on.

Is it not just a very small number of sites which have both? Think I've only ever stayed on one and then it only had a tiny handful of grass pitches in the grand scheme of things. These I'm told didn't 'come in' to use until the more clement months were upon us. Some, I guess, will like the option of grass so may be being able to select them may be beneficial to all.

So you had a HS and all was well.
What you're suggesting is a different issue from the topic of this thread.
If you are convinced that the scenario was contrived for the benefit of a friend of the warden you will obviously have taken the matter up with the club and I’m sure we will all appreciate hearing the response.

There are many that like grass until it has been persisting down for a week. It tends to loose some of its appeal at that point and particularly when said grass has been done to death by previous awning use.
There are many sites with a mixture containing a lot of grass pitches.

It would be interesting to know what percentage of pitches are grass across the whole network and the reasons why they remain so, is it preference by some? That may just help explain things and put things into perspective. I suspect in the grand scheme of things the number is very few. I might be wrong mind and being able to specifically book them would be helpful. However, if only these were available and I wanted to be in that area then given fair weather I'd go for them even with my motorhome.

If some all grass sites are able to be kept open with the majority of pitches available, it does seem that if there was more effort to provide drainage to grass pitches rather than bulldoze a few tons of granite chippings into a hard standing, then we might all get the pitch type we want /would like.

I'm not opposed to grass and will use a grass pitch from May to September. There's nothing nicer than walking on a grass pitch in bare feet on a nice summer day. I wouldn't contemplate grass before May hence the reason we choose sites wth all HS.

We've just booked several sites for a round trip starting next Saturday at Chapel Lane, then Bladon Chains ( for a visit to Blenheim Place before our Annual Ticket runs out), then Henley before finishing at Warwick. We don't know whether we'll get hardstandings, but we've booked non-awning pitches.
We are going to have to phone each site to ask for a blue-badge pitch or one not too far from the toilet block. Unlike the C&CC we cannot add this as a request when booking on-line with C&MCC. (Telephone requests sometimes get 'forgotten') On the other hand we haven't had to pay reservation fees!

".....and particularly when said grass has been done to death by previous awning use."
perhaps there's a an element of pitch protection that might be offered by preventing awnings from 'doing pitches to death'...
wouldn't this also be part of managing the site?

I remember those days and the problems wardens had trying to facilitate the members that were booked in,but then H&S and Iitigation was just an obstacle that site staff "worked round",with their on site equipment that mostly is not available to them now

I agree with AD, if we did get good wether for eating outside (it's never the same (experience) here, I certainly wouldn't want to be doing it on a sea of chippings....
chippings are for driving/parking on when conditions are bad, not for sitting on even when conditions are good...
this is one of the reasons that we don't tour the uk in the same way as we do 'elsewhere' .....there's just no ambience on a club site....
a nice well kept grass CL or THS yes....but with chippings all over the place, no thanks.....

I think I will change my profile to a motor home, might get a reserved pitch😎

Totally agree with you on that one BB. When we are away over there its rare that we even put down a groundsheet/mat. Its even rarer to sit inside and eat, there is nothing like sitting outside in the sun and shade taking your time to cook and then eat a meal, its just not the same over here. Love the smells that come from some of our foreign neighbours Boy are we ready for a trip over there just now

"Love the smells that come from some of our foreign neighbours"
Don't they have showers?

A few years ago while touring in the Motorhome in Aberdeenshire we stayed for a few nights on a private site attached to a country park. The site was beautifully laid out with glades and private pitches screened by small trees and bushes. All the pitches for Tents and Caravans were on very slightly sloping well drained grass.
The site operators, aware that heavy motorhomes might damage the grass in inclement weather,, provided a flat tarmac area just inside the gate in the high wall, which was large enough to support five Motorhomes with the appropriate spacings between. This made it easy to exit and enter the site every day without going near the grass.
To me this was the perfect layout for any site and a model which could be easily adapted at limited expense to many CMC sites in existence.
