Ball tampering "Down Under"

Ball tampering has been prevalent since the advent of Cricket. No country has been immune but only recently the photographic evidence has meant that a few unfortunate teams have been caught red handed. It used to be having a pocket full of grit and rubbing it into one side of the ball which was common place. The teams are just a bit more sophisticated now.

It's just not cricket.
Ah, but it was!!
My view is never mind banning them for 1 match and fining them, they should be banned sine die, and that would then set an example to all other sides who might consider doing similar.

Have to agree.
A one match ban is pathetic. The Australian Prime Minister's speech was succinct and his dismay was clearly evident.
The one test ban is probably all that is required at the moment because I think there will be further repercussions. I wouldn't be surprised to see Smith dropped and banned for life by the ACB. Shame, because he's a superb talent.

Like Nellie & Jonray, I think that what has happened so far is lenient BUT I'll wait till after they get home to see what happens then. I might be wrong but I have a gut feeling that both of 'em will be lucky to get jobs washing sight screens in future!!

Why do you think teams that get caught red handed are unfortunate? Sounds as though you condone such activities.

As said previously Ball Tampering has been prevalent over many years. England has been in the forefront of this cheating such as the case of Atherton in 1994
England captain Mike Atherton was in the crosshairs in 1994 when he was accused of ball-tampering during the Lord's Test against South Africa. --- After TV pictures appeared to show him applying dirt to the ball, Atherton insisted he had only "put some dust in my pocket from a used pitch... to keep my hands and the ball dry". --- "Aye Right" --- His defence was that, in trying to keep the moisture off the ball, he was therefore seeking to maintain its condition, rather than alter it. There are varying accounts of exactly what Atherton told match referee Peter Burge, who chose a fine rather than a ban
Punishment: Atherton fined £2,000.
So the cheats have changed the character of cricket - It happens and some are unfortunate and get caught but many others get away with it. The rules should be applied equally across the cricketing world.

Not Out ! Should have been life without the option !!
But there again I'm Old School on this sort of thing.
I hate & detest Footy common taters saying stupid things such as "He took one for the team" as if deliberate fouls were permitted in the rule book ! They are CHEATS with nothing good to say for themselves unless it's " I'm retiring" and the same should apply in Cricket & all other games !!

What about the sheer stupidity of stuffing sandpaper down your trousers😭😱
My big bugbear is footy commentators saying so- and- so "won a penalty" Penalties are not there to be "won" they're in the gift of the referee for fouls in the area.
The one last night was nailed on but it took the VAR to spot it

Why not issue pre-tampered-with-balls to everyone?

Sob I sob saw sob on sob tv sob that sob the sob arch sob villain sob has sob given sob his sob first sob interview sob.
Great big jessie, did those nasty cameramen upset diddums then, never mind he'll have plenty of time to go and feed the muggers then.
Now the pressures on the lads back in Oz the coach has thrown his toys out & is packing up after the second Test Match. Probably realised he will now really have to rush to get his version in print first.

The regret and sobbing merely reflects their sadness at all the income they're going to lose. Pathetic. I'm sick of seeing all manner of interviewees blubbing and sometimes apologising for being 'emotional' but no doubt it's considered good T.V. by some presenters and producers.
Most high-profile sports have been tainted (ruined even) by T.V. and sponsorship income.
On Radio 4 today an ex pro footballer from the 60's was saying that soccer used to be a sport played by a team of enthusiasts for the team, but nowadays some sports are regarded solely as a route to a celebrity lifestyle and an opportunity for personal wealth.
It's a job to know whether one is ever watching untainted sporting events.

Such a shame that the regret and tears have come too late. Maybe thinking about the consequences before committing the tampering would have saved both.
I agree with Spriddler about what passes for top level sport these days. Our son was offered a chance for a team but we denied him as we'd seen others pushed and then dropped - the heartbreak they suffered was awful.
I'm cynical and expect the regret and tears is for the lifestyle and loss of earnings etc

Well the Sins Of Oz, have just received a 5==0 whupping from England +/- in the 50 over version of the game and nary a player with uber-shiny studs in their boots -- Brian's wondering if, to use that awful modern and untrue phrase, " Lessons have been learned "
ooops sorry for the typo that should, of course, have started :-- the SONS of Oz
