Camping du Chateau at Eymet ticks two boxes - it has river frontage and is a short walk to town (reviews on UKCampsite.co.uk) - but if you want to be on the main Dordogne river or if you want an upmarket site with swimming pool and restaurant then you need to look elsewhere.

We stayed in Coulon last year has a canal running through it where people fish. There is a Club site just outside Coulon where we stayed & also a Aire de Camping Car in Coulon which was good quality & in the centre of Coulon. Next time we go to Coulon we will use the Aire it was far far cheaper & in a better location than the Club site. I know Coulon is a little bit north of the Dordogne but you could stay on the way down or back.

Thanks, I will have a look at both.

A nice site, with a pool, but no bells and whistles, is La Cabane at Vezac
Right on the river, and in one direction you can walk to Beynac, with its chateau, (which is visible from parts of the campsite) although only a few shops, market on a Monday; in the other direction to La Roque Gageac (a bit further to walk, but a nice walk). There is also Castelnaud within walking distance, again with a fabulous chateau.
Nearby (in a car) is Sarlat, very touristy, but worth a visit, especially on market day, Wednesday, although it gets very crowded then. Also Domme is close, we have actually cycled there from Vezac, of course in a car it's much quicker, and it's worth a visit.

We stayed at Les Iles at Beaulieu sur Dordogne which is right on the river bank and people fished from the site. It was a two minutes walk into town. There is more information with photos on my blog

We stayed here some years ago...

Booked it through the CC. Not on the river, but trout fishing in the on-site lake. It gets stocked quite regularly, so catching isn’t too difficult, and you can eat what you catch. I caught 10 one day, so gave some away.A nice relaxed atmosphere in a very pleasant location, but a bit out of the way. That said, it’s not difficult to get provisions. As I recall, there are daily bread deliveries. The on-site restaurant serves up some nice grub, with tables overlooking the lake.
