We find that out of all our memberships i.e. NT, HHA, English Heritage, WWT. WWT seems the best value for money at £6.25 per month for two of us, we get places that we can visit all the year round without any part of their sites closing for the winter. National Trust tend to close their houses in the winter although the gardens remain open but do you want to be walking around a garden when its freezing cold outside with snow, ice or rain? If they wanted to close parts of their property, it would be better to keep the insides open and the outsides closed. Visitors surely want somewhere warm and dry to go to in the winter!
HHA seem to close down completely in the winter and English Heritage open on just winter weekends. Of course, Spring, Summer and Autumn most properties are open on weekdays as well as weekends. It seems a bit unfair to close in winter though when you are paying for year round membership.

Good!

RSPB sites are probably the best value because you can use your caravan club membership to get into them.

Don't forget though Malcom that many of the folk apparently working are volunteers and want some time off. Plus of course with the houses, if you have lots of damp breathing humans wandering about, you need to heat them adequately to avoid potential damage. That could well increase the cost of membership.

I am an NT volunteer at a property near York. The main reason for a short winter closure is to do some of the conservation and restoration work that can't be done with visitors in the house. The property I'm associated with is only totally closed for around 8 weeks and, as you say, the winter weekends are in November and December. We open fully again mid- February. I know a lot of properties vary in this though.

I am a EH volunteer, we work all through the year, but out in gardens. A lot of EH closures are to do with cut backs. Some properties are just not economically viable to open all week in Winter. Agree with heddlo about conservation work as well, some properties do need some down time.
Sorry about not checking re Chartwell Malcolm, I should have realised opening would be limited this time of year. I visited as part of a tour of historic places in Kent a few years ago. It is such an interesting place, perhaps just me, but I felt Churchill's presence all about the place. We visited in Summer, gardens were at their best, I would love to have swum in his swimming pond! And the little studio was a delight.

Don't buy one of them, Pete, unless you have Lots of bunnies round the boatyard
!!
Now I've just had a peep out thro' the windows & just one teeny tiny cloud out there in a sky that's darkening I grant you, but its still fairly light
!! Could it be that ( whisper it softly )
SPRING IS ON ITS WAY
?? !!

I absolutely loved Chartwell and wish it was nearer to us. TDA. I agree I also felt Churchill's presence about the place. It is so very much his house.

Today it was pack up the van at the end of a nice break, of course it was wet and gloomy
Jill with a J from CT came across to say hello, nice to meet her, shame we weren't staying longer.
Very wet journey lots of spray on the motorway, so many drivers not using headlights
.We dumped the van back at storage, it was filthy but will have to clean it at the weekend. Washing sorted and first loads done.
Nice photo of the moon.

We went to Worthing this morning and used the multi storey car park above M&S. Much cheaper than Brighton where it costs £5 per hour. Worthing only £1 per hour.
We visited HMV and bought two new CDs, one by Neil Diamond for £5.99 and the other by Ed Sheeran for £9.99. Total £15.98 spend through a contactless payment on my Tesco credit clubcard. Two pence short to get two points but at least I'll get one point!
After that we visited a grocery shop in the town centre and bought some karela and mango pickle. Then on to a mountain wear shop that was showing up to 70% discount. So I bought my wife a waterproof jacket. So all in all a successful shopping trip!

I also went to Worthing today Malcolm, I went in using my bus pass my reading glasses required a minor repair both cost nothing, I then walked back home to Lancing a 45 minute brisk bit of exercise good for my copd, cost nothing. No spend No points but very good for me.
:)😀

If it was Mountain Warehouse Malcolm, I hope you used your CAMC card for further discount! I once got a jacket from there heavily discounted to start with, and then they allowed me to use not only my CC Club card, but my OHs fire service discount as well! Result and a half!

Mixed weather for us in the Midlands cariadon. Rain this morning but it had stoped by lunchtime. Went out to get a little shopping around lunchtime, but still damp on the ground. Hope it will brighten up a bit tomorrow. Off to hospital tomorrow afternoon for a physio appointment as a lead up to my right knee replacement.

From Worthing town centre all the way to Lancing? That's quite a long walk, Mr. Route! At least it didn't rain!
