    They spent years improving the road over the Simplon and the link via Domodossala to the Autoroute and it is vastly improved.

    For anybody with time on their hands who do that route, you pass quite close to Zermatt (a detour of about 30km). There is an ACSI site about 5 miles from Zermatt (no cars in the town) which has a reasonably priced minibus taxi into the town. From their you can get the Gornergrattbahn up to around 3500 meters around the Matterhorn. Simply stunning ( it not cheap!). If the weather is poor, give it a miss.

    Hi Ian, thanks for making me smile!

    Why? well you seem to be taking a lot of effort to plan the trip, for me its almost as enjoyable as actually going, but I did identify with you making a detailed explanation but,within the very last sentence, admitting the wife's influence!!

    Been there planned that etc etc.
