No they grow big foxes in Cornwall 😂😂😂 Wardens here say there are lots of them about. They take over the site apparently when it closes. Lots of rabbits which could account for the size of the foxes.😉

Most mornings and sometimes during the day we see Munjac Deer when walking Rosa, today we saw one of our wood wardens, and he was doing another count as the deer population is now to be culled as there are far more than the area is capable of sustaining,as they these day have no natural predators

Visited Greylake Reserve nr Bridgewater today. Spotted a Marsh Harrier and an Egret, and a Reed Bunting on the feeder at the car park  before getting to the main hide. Very little activity there, although heard a Water Rail close by. Just as I was leaving there was a commotion in the willows behind the entrance and spotted Long-tailed Tits and a Firecrest, a first for me!!

    Hi Nellie

If you are still in the area, Westhay moore offers a good chance to see Bearded Tits near the island hide.

Hurricane Ophelia gave a rare treat to those in the Bristol area this morning.

Due to Saharan dust and other factors stirred up by the high winds, the morning sun turned very red.

    Quite a surprise.

The wind is getting a bit stronger now, but the light is very eirrey.

We had the very spectacular red sun this morning here in East Lancashire.

But now the wind is getting stronger, and too cloudy to see any sign of the sun.

    Take care, everybody.

Anyone on Baltic Wharf could take the chance to see the Red Deer in Ashton Court (Bower Ashton entrance). They are just beginning the rut, stags gathering the Hinds together.

Passed by earlier and heard the dominant stag bellowing

We had a blue sky morning, then a very strange orange/grey mist (associated with a very odd smell of a mix of spiced woodsmoke, and seaweed), then the orange mist lifted, and the sun appeared bright red in the sky.  We too tried to take photographs, and whilst it appears surrounded by red it doesn't show just how red the disc itself was.

Then the sun came out, and it was a bright sunny afternoon, and very warm, but then followed by increasingly strong winds.  Now the wind seems to have dropped again.  What an interesting day.

On the last day in Germany (Saturday) saw an osprey and a rough legged buzzard, too far for meaningful photo shots.

And now, for something completely different...wink

Using up old tomato compost bags to top up garden pots we spotted a resident already in place. So we carefully replaced the toad in his hole (or home?) and hope he continues to enjoy life in our garden.

The wind had abated for the day, so took a walk around Westhay Moore this afternoon. Rather cloudy, but nice to get out hoping for a sighting of Bearded Tits, but non found. Sightings included distant Bittern and Marsh Harrier, Kestrel and a couple of Egrets.

The only close up shots were of a flock of Longtail Tits and a pair of Snipe.

    Hi OP

How did the Crane spotting go, we had a few around the Slimbridge area but I do not know if they migrate. There is very little around at present, the only places where there is an abundance seem to be Chew Valley Lake and Slimbridge, I guess the swans will be returning soon for the winter.

Have you got your camera back yet and is all fixed.

Today was the day for Kingfisher spotting. We were sat at the Cross Guns, Avoncliff, having lunch today, with Moulesy & Mrs M, and spotted one at least 3 time flashing up and down the river. Reading other postings, in General Chat, they've also been spotted by two other contributors. It must be the fine sunny weather that's making them easier to spot.

Nice viewing, NTH. You'll find at this time of year that juveniles are being pushed out of the parents territories so there are more around and pretty soon some of the parents will be leaving their own areas if these areas are higher up rivers and making their way down to estuaries for the winter. Good news for us watchers.

BM - What's around the Chew Valley area at the moment as we will heading somewhere in a couple of weeks and that might be one of the places we end up at? Many thanks for any info.

Hi Had a pair of Hawfinches on the feeders today and yesterday a red squirrel running on top of one of our walls and 31st October we went to our local skip and had 3 wild boar running across the road all females  not something we see every day here in the Lot France.

We saw 2 female Goosander also various other birds & waterfowl/geese & some medium sized waders (too far away to identify) on our 1st visit to St Aidan’s Nature Reserve (RSPB) Nr Leeds Yorkshire a couple of weeks ago.  It’s a very large ex NCB opencast mining site with good footpaths, no hides, small reception area with drinks machine/chill cabinet snacks & tables/chairs inside & out.  We will return when next in the area  to walk around the Reedbed area as we only managed to walk around half the site this time.

N1805, if in the area then I would recommend visiting the reserve at Fairburn Ings, which as the Goosander flies, is quite close to St.Aidans and of a similar ilk.

Wherenext- thanks for the reminder about Fairburn Ings.  Some years since we visited there. Usually go to Blacktoft Sands  RSPB if in the area.  Went to St Aidan’s as we were visiting Leeds Armouries the previous day which we both found really interesting.

Just retutned from a short break around Glastonbury, so not totally up to date, but if you look on Avon Bird blog, there are daily Chew Valley reports. A couple of weeks ago there were over 40  Egrets at Herons Gate section of the lake. 2 weeks might see the Short Eared owls at Uphill near Weston super Mare.

The starling murmeration at Ham Wall is already quite impressive with upwards of 20000 arriving at about 4.00 between platform 1 and 2 and numbers expected to approach 750,000 in the coming weeks.

    hope this helps,

    where are you staying?

Ta, BM. Haven't booked anything just yet as not finalised dates or even where we are headed. It's either Chew Valley (maybe the site itself), but not yet checked out CLs with H/S, or over towards York or Goole area.

Knowing us we'll probably end up somewhere near the Solway Firth and go goose watching!

If you make it down this way, Ham Wall starlings are worth the visit. Hard to imagine how there can be up to 1 million in one place. If my maths are correct, that is 50 times what we saw this week.

Wherenext  - I do hope you & anyone interested gets to see this starling roost display.  Having seen this mass gathering ‘display’ of starlings in the Ham Wall area a few years ago we found the noise also amazing as they came down to roost in the reeds quite close by.  On our 2nd visit 2yrs ago we were not close enough to see them go down nearby but did see the stunning shape changing formations.  Good luck.

Just back from our trip to Naples, we were there for the football, but obviously went to see the main sites, and we're always on the lookout for birds.

Plenty of Italian sparrows and yellow legged gulls about, and quite a few wheatear, on the move.

We went to Vesuvius crater and saw what looked like water pipits. Unlikely I know, but that is exactly what they looked like, no vegetation up there, but they were running about on the crater rim. Any ideas as to identity very welcome. Don't have a photo, but will try to post one of a gull with Vesuvius in the background.
