I think Pippah is the nearest David. Do you have a Safefill yet and which size are you asking about?

Hi Merve.  No I haven't taken the plunge yet.  I still have two Calorlite bottles with gas in, so it's not urgent.  I'd probably go for the middle size - it's the footprint that's the main problem with regards to getting it into the locker.  I want to get as near as I can to the weight of the calorlite bottles.

The current Safefill bottle looks to me to be the same bottle, as what was BP Gaslight and the diameter of those is 30cm. The heights of the cylinders is on the safefill site. For a low gas user I would have thought it was worth buying 2 safefill bottles. If you used the refillable as the main bottle and a Calorlite as a reserve I would imagine that this would last almost forever.

Hi David. When I bought my first in 2013, I bought the original type (middle size) and found the footprint slight larger than the Calor but it has made absolutely no difference to the operation. The strap holds everything nice and secure. I think you need to measure the mouth of your locker, the height and the width. My large Safefill goes in on its side and then straightens up to fit fine- the dia being the same. Once you get a Safefill, you'll wonder why you didn't do it before! All the best David.

I took an empty Gaslight cylinder being the same size as my Safefill along to see if it would fit the locker of the MH I'm planning to buy. Has to go in sideways first, so any backup cylinder will have to be something smaller that can be put in after the refillable is in place. Why do manufacturers fit such stupidly small locker doors?

Thought I would post the latest on my Safefill experiences. In Wales at the moment (non EHU of course) and as you know, Aileen has been causing problems with high winds. One of the blow up awnings on site suffererd earlier in the week by getting torn. The owner did nothing less than go home , repair it, and brought it back today and put it up- well done that man! However, they spotted us taking our Isabella Magnum down and came over to talk about the Isabella as they are wanting one for the quality. "Who's gas do you use?" I asked at the end of the conversation "I have 2 Calor Cylinders"looking at me quizzically Really? I opened my front locker and showed him my 20lt Safefill. I explained what it was and how it worked- that's another one that hasn't even heard of Safefill - now, he can't wait to get his hands on one realising the savings on gas to be made. - how many caravaners are like him?  just shows you how people are happy with what they perceive to be the normal- i.e.- Calor Cylinders. I gave him the literature on them- He must have been impressed- he called me a genius!! 😂😂😂😂

Hi everyone. Sometime ago, I wrote to the trade dept of the government complaining that the big LPG companies were using underhand tactics to try to put Safefill out of business. I have finally received a reply from my email on the 12th August - today being 14th September! I guess some things never change- Anyway, not only that but the reply was only to tell me that I had to write to another department called the CMA- the Competition and Markets Authority. Email general.enquiries@cma.gsi.gov.uk  I have redirected my email to the CMA. Even though now that Safefill has been accepted into the Red Guide, I have personal proof that Calor are still dragging their feet on this issue. Calor Gas own Autogas and the new information has not been distributed to all its Autogas customers, so we still have garages refusing to fill Safefill "because they haven't received instructions from Autogas that they can fill them" Calor are still, even now, quoting the old Sht 26 to try and justify their actions.

Guys and Gals of the CMHC, I ask for all interested parties, and there are quite a few, to please send the the CMA a strongly worded email regarding these draconian practices by Autogas (Calor). They (Calor and others) haven't yet realised that the battle is lost and along with it the war. Safefill is here to stay thank goodness for us and future generations. Please support this call. We should now be able to fill up where we like- it's getting better but it's still a long way from perfect so we need to put pressure on to get the changes that should have happened naturally. People power is the way forward. I thank you for your support.

Hi David,   I believe the Safefill bottle to be the same size as the original BP lite refillable (exchangeable) now at Homebase stores.  (28.00 this August).    I have two in my Valencia2, locker which I guess is the same size as the 3.   It's a little tight around the middle when closing the door, but plenty of height to get to the connection for ferries etc.

Like many though I don't use enough gas to warrant the cost if going over to safefill.   And too much politics around the refilling if them.

I do need to make some phone calls locally to check on the situation with regards to filling a safefill bottle.  Our current Calorlite is low and although I have a replacement bottle on "reserve" with a stockist, I am also thinking that if we are going to make the swap, the sooner we do that the better.

Great news Tigerman. More and more are welcoming Safefill. I believe refillables will be a major revenue stream for these garages that have seen the gas car market dive.

Just contacted Autocolour at Wotton Bassett in WIltshire (very close to Swindon Caravans).  They have confirmed they will allow you to fill a Safefill bottle.  The first time you use it, they show you how to fill and then you can do it yourself whenever they are open.

On the Safefill website is a retailer very close to me - it wasn't there a while back when i looked:-

Petrol Filling Station and SPAR, Cherry Orchard Way, Rochford, Southend-on-Sea SS4 1GP, UK

Has anyone used this for Safefill refilling?

If ok this makes choice for Safefill system a lot easier with this being so local.

Shedload, you won’t regret it. I do fill locally but I always check outlets where I am going. For instance, we went to the North Lakes not so long ago and found Ullswater Road Garage in Penrith filled Safefill. Wherever we have been, we can either fill up on route or near to our destination. More and more garages are coming on board now that the education is getting there. Garages are now seeing that the Safefill cylinder is a revenue stream. Let’s use them and encourage others to drop their predudice, educate themselves about Safefill and accept them at their outlet too.

Hi John. Shame they are still quoting what the OLD red guide says. UKLPG is an organisation made up of the ‘big boys’ in the LPG industry. They have tried every trick in the hook to kill Safefill off. They have failed but they still won’t lie down. Anyone reading sheet 26 may be excused for thinking that no one but a ‘ trained person’ can fill a Safefill cylinder, which is utter rubbish! They have the same fitting as a car and I don’t remember ‘trained staff’ filling gas powered cars up all day long. It’s just another tactic to throw yet another banana skin in the path of Safefill which will continue its march to full acceptance whether UKLPG like it or not!!

Merve, the link provided seems to go to the current 'red guide' on the Petroleum Enforcement Liaison Group (PELG) website. Page 61 covers LPG but still says not to fill portable cyclinders.  If this isn't the current one do you have a link to the most up to date 'red guide'?

    Thanks Merve.

Further to my finding local filling station on Safefill web site, email response from Safefill to share -

    • Thank you for your enquiry.
    • All the 'appointed refills', on our refill map, have been contacted by us and have agreed to fill Safefill cylinders. However, situations and policy can change so we always recommend that prospective customers ensure that they are happy with where they can fill and the refill situation. We have spoken to the SPAR forecourt fairly recently and they were happy to fill, but for your own peace of mind, if they are close to you, please call in and confirm this.
    • To explain a little about the current situation, regarding the filling of Safefill cylinders, we have attached a recent article, published by the PRA (Petrol Retailers Association ). The Red Guide, as mentioned in the article, is the guidance for forecourts so we are very hopeful, when this information is more widely known, that more refills will be available for Safefill cylinders.
    • We hope this information helps but if you require anything further, please do not hesitate to contact us.

I'll call in to confirm and let you know response. Noted comment about filling up on route or near to destination, but this is a bonus if it pans out. Anyway, looking good for a Safefill purchase.

May I be the first on CT to congratulate Safefill on their success in reaching the finals of the APEA awards for innovation! No more than you deserve Safefill- you have made it possible for thousands of campers, caravanners, boaters etc to access much cheaper gas via your cylinders. Thank you from one very happy customer.

Bad news for me.  I was speaking to someone last Saturday who was another convert to Safefill.  He also now has a Bailey van with side gas locker.  He has confirmed that you can't get two safefill bottles in the locker because of the footprint.  He bought two when he had a previous van and now just uses one. The question now is, can I get one safefill and one ordinary Calor bottle?
