For as long as we have been touring, Club Sites, and indeed some of the private sites we have used have always had children around with a tad more freedom than they perhaps get at home. Quite the norm to see youngsters around on bikes and scooters, and if the site had a field or central area, then other games taking place. If you prefer a quieter life, you go outside school holiday periods!

What is rather upsetting, not just on site roads, but generally, is the disregard that a few drivers have for other people's children. Despite having children riding along with them, some drivers have no respect for the unpredictability of other children, out and about.

Vehicle speed is easily controlled by the warden staff by ensuring that the CMC rules are complied with.

Indeed.  And as bicycles are vehicles then the rules regarding speed and direction should be applied to them as well as to motorised vehicles.  A pedal cycle being operated at speed can do a lot of damage to a pedestrian, as a recent court case has highlighted.

We always avoid those, not because we are OAPs, but because we keep a lot of stuff we might need in the car and prefer to have it easily accessible.

I would say less than 50% of Dutch sites operate in this manner

Been on quite a few with hedges and bushes MM. Totally enough to hide a youngster coming in the opposite direction. Then of course on some pitches cars are parked close to the road, so a youngster can come out from behind one very quickly and into the path of a car. I am not saying they should not play, just some of the younger ones need a little more supervision.

Ideally of course kids should follow the flow of the traffic and remain within the speed limits. I have seen few if any do that, most are traveling at least 10 mph. So even if the car is obeying the speed limit they are closing at a rate equivalent to the length of an average sized caravan every second. Unfortunately young children don't fully appreciate the possible results of their actions. So it is incumbent on us adults to do it for them. To me personally this means driving at an appropriate speed not exceeding 5 and being very aware. For the parents it should mean keeping an eye on what there offspring are up to and issuing guidance. Unfortunately for a few it is a case of send them off and forget, and therin  lies the problem.

+1. the thought of going back to the car in the car park as I've forgotten my glasses/phone/wallet/caravan key/some item of shopping/did I lock the car would not thrill me.

Btw I seem to doing that sort of thing a lot more often, old age and failing.... what's the word I want?

    yes caravan club sites

    from 3 upwards

I have never actually been told the speed, I am not stupid and I can read the signs that tell me the speed I should be going.

I have never been told to drive 5 miles an hour "because of children"

I am NOT disputing that people should drive at 5 miles an hour or the posted speed limit, that is the sensible thing to do when there are children/adults/dogs/tractors/lawnmowers around.

My point was never have the words been said to me "drive at 5 miles an hour because we have children roaming round"

like someone said the caravan site is not a nursery , you still have to watch your children and if you are on the other side of the camp site drinking how can you be watching your children?

its not them telling me the speed I have to go, it was the add on because of children. then getting on the site and seeing WHY they warned me.

I think you all are missing the point

I DRIVE AT THE SPEED LIMIT WHEN I AM ON THE SITE LIKE I DO WHEN I AM DRIVING ON PUBLIC ROADS

and on the flip side, very small children under 5 do not have the road sense that an older child or adult has

Children enjoying themselves on club sites during the school holidays! Whatever next?!!

Bunty - you've made this statement about "parents sat around drinking" at least twice now. I suppose it's too much to expect that you have evidence of this rather than just assumption? undecided

not everyone likes/wants children running around their caravan/motorhome they have probably spent a fortune on

its exactly the same as people not wanting their neighbours to have disco till the early hours of the morning

    Gangs!?

Pardon me for saying so, Bunty, but your posts smack of exaggeration.

Were you by any chance at Knaresborough when Kdee was staying? surprised

well if you mean did I take photos of them, well no I didn't, I didn't think I had to have proof

even if they were sat drinking tea, they should have their eye on their own children

I think if you go to any non-AO holiday destination in  the main school summer holiday you are likely to find children, even a CAMC site and, yes, at times they will be out of sight of their parents - children have to be allowed independence at some stage and a caravan site is probably a darn sight safer than many other places.

My advice, for  it's worth, if you want to avoid children in July/August is to look at some of the excellent Tranquil Park sites throughout the country. smile

Do you have children or grandchildren Bunty? I'm not trying to be personal, but the idea that children on holiday should be in direct sight of parents/grandparents is fanciful to say the least. One would hope that on a club site like Chatsworth there are sufficient responsible adults around to ensure children don't come o harm when out and about exploring the site.

Kdee, not knee. Have you not been reading the forum? You must have lived a very sheltered existence not to know where Knaresborough is.

Do you know, Bunty, you remind me of someone whose name I can't quite recall at the moment.cool

Looks like you're fairly new to the forum. Welcome to CT. laughing

PS. I see you weren't happy at Hawes either. You are so unlucky.

sorry Bunty I am confused, were they quote around the site as you first posted or around their (your) caravan/motorhome as you now post?

is it  cycling and scootering as in your OP or running as you have posted now?

No one, children or parents, should be running around anyone's else outfit and you should inform the parents and/or wardens if this is the case, but that's different to your OP.

    Also you say

its exactly the same as people not wanting their neighbours to have disco till the early hours of the morning

I've been on many club sites over 18 years and I've never had a disco next door or even heard of this happening but put that on one side for now, you are really making a direct comparison with the sound of children playing in the daytime/evening and having a disco next to you?

Are there fewer children on sites that don't have play areas etc?

Of course parents need to supervise very young children and I feel strongly that any one way systems should be observed by ALL.  I had a very near miss a few years ago even going at snails pace a child came out from behind a vehicle and definitely raised my heart beat - I saw him with bruises later with his mother and mentioned it to her - she was pretty horrified - as well she might be I did nearly squash him!

We would never get over damaging a child would we - and I seem to recall that the worst has happened some time ago - it shouldn't happen again.

Take a hint Bunty, if you are very concerned about your touring unit being damaged by the children of others, then a stress free holiday will be better obtained by either avoiding Sites during holiday periods, and some sites in particular, or go to AO sites where there will be no children. No point in spoiling your holiday being anxious about what may or may not happen, try and remove the stress level. Children are unpredictable, accident prone and even supervised, unplanned events occur.
