I had a nap this afternoon after lunch and since waking up, I've had two cups of tea in the awning. It's still grey and overcast but cool enough not to need the aircon.

Thanks brue, it's one of our favourite walks in this area. Not been to the force though for many years and unless there has been a decent downpore it can be disappointing. No we paid M, although it has gone up a bit since we last went ( £2.50 each), however they have improved the paths a lot, put in more bridges and lots of picnic tables. When you compare it with a lot of other attractions it seems a fair price. It used to be free Christmas Day, don't know if it still is. The weather is supposed to be nice again tomorrow Malcolm so we plan another good walk then, as Wednesday is forecast to be a washout.

Yes, best to make the most of the good weather whilst it lasts!cool

The forecast here says the weather will improve this evening, clear skies and sunshine but no sign of that yet. Also sunshine tomorrow morning, followed by fair weather and some cloud by afternoon.

As tomorrow is a day off, we may plan to visit some places locally as it could be a good day for walking as long as it doesn't get too hot!

Hahahahahaha, while this may seem terribly sad to most, I finally have a flushing loo! After several weeks of using a bucket to flush and numerous attempts to mend it (by me, ok k) I have done it. I had replaced the wrong bit several times (new fangled flush thingy). A friend suggested yesterday that I might be looking at the wrong bit.............

    i am sooo 😁

It was starting to get a bit too warm and muggy in the awning, since the wind has dropped, so I'm back inside the caravan again and just closed the doors, windows and switched on the aircon. Cooling down a bit now. There are patches of blue sky showing, so it looks like the forecast is right. Perhaps there will be a sunny evening here after all! In fact it's brightening up all the time as I type this.

The warden was mowing the lawn earlier so the grass is looking good, freshly cut and lush green, the greenery is all around us, so nice to have a grass pitch!

Well done. If at first you don't succeed 😉. It's good to attempt these things yourself, if only from a cost point of view unless you could really hoof it up 😲😲😲. Every day's a learning day and it's so satisfying to achieve something by your own hands. You're certainly being tested at the moment, hope tings are still progressing? However slowly it's still early days.

I do hope there's a decent maintenance fund for everyone's sake.

Listening to 'you and yours? Recently those who have bought local authority/housing association flats on the open market are being presented with some truly horrendous bills for communal areas as the LA/HA don't build up maintenance funds. One couple had just bought a flat and despite searches and questions were presented with a bill of £30,000 ish payable very quickly as their share of replacing the roof. They were already mortgaged to the max!

Still grey showery and chilly here. More like a winter day. Thinking about some heat definitely not cooling! The temperature outside has crept up 0.1 to 15c.

Passport forms completed and posted, form asks for mobile number and will text when received. Really simple and current passports included with the renewal forms and photos. If we'd applied online the passports would still have to be posted.

I prefer to spend my money on things I like and enjoy. I am perfectly capable of simple DIY jobs and more than willing to learn. The Internet is great for this these days. I remember my domestic science teacher, yes I'm old enough to have have proper lessons! Teaching us all to change/fit a plug on the basis it was less complex than preparing a balanced meal. My dad taught me the basics of car maintenance, neither he nor I had money to pay another in those days 😉. Painting wallpaper hanging and gardening. Always something to amuse and never idle!  If you couldn't pay you didn't have 😲.

    Hi Malcolm,

I refuse to pay someone, if by my powers of deduction, I can DIY.  Plus, funds are a bit tight at the moment and I would rather spend the £100 call out fee on a few nights away 😬

I have been to Screw fix today and bought some bargain kitchen taps ( which need replacing) so there is my next job. Might take me a while but..............

Also picked up some plaster: fortunately we live in an old cottage so the walls are not that smooth 😈

    I will get there 👍

I remember my Mum having a shared bill for a roof on her block of flats, very expensive although they'd all saved into a contingency fund. Good flats but the roof finally needed some work.

No, not the way it is usually done up here, bills have to be paid as they arise.

There is a "factor"  who deals with regular things like cleaning the common parts,  communal electricity, gardening, lift servicing, etc, and the owners pay a monthly amount to cover all that, and generally it is enough.

Insurance is arranged by them too, but each owner pays individually.

All other repairs are billed as they arise, small things in arrears, larger ones they get quotes and owners have to pay up front.  There is no common fund, owners need to make their own provisions.

You've just convinced me of the beauty of living in a caravan. When we bought this caravan £28000 paid for everything: new furniture, new bed, new washroom and shower, new kitchen, new microwave, new fridge/ freezer, new aircon, new heating system, new carpets, the list goes on. I'm so thankful that I don't have bills of £30,000 just for a roof repair!

How do you sleep at night with the worry of such hefty bills to pay?

Our son-in-law purchased an ex council flat when he first left home, he still has it, so is also a landlord now.  He has had some big bills, all while he was still living there.....new lift, total internal refurb of all common areas.....luckily the roof and windows were done before he purchased.

However the council here allow the owners to pay in installments, giving an interest free loan, so he has managed OK.

He has recently had to stump up for new smoke alarms, expensive type, but I was able to fit them for him, so that saved him a few hundred.

I also get to do the running repairs, if we are home.

How do you sleep at night with such an insecure future ahead of you Malc?  And you have said that your wife is a lot younger than you, so have you not given a thought to her future should anything happen to you first?  Is she not worried?  Thank goodness we are not all the same!

Unfortunately, a caravan, like a car or MH, is a depreciating asset, unlike a house or flat .......usually!

In this case, the tax man will foot some of the bill as she will be carrying forward a loss for several years, and fortunately she has made provision for a rainy day by having a regular saving regime.

Hopefully the bill will be less than a new caravan.

Fingers crossed KjellNN. I suspected things might be done differently up there 😉.  Goes to show always best to put something aside each payday to help towards the unexpected.

Well the fire is on in the lounge,  holiday dog bemused as they don't have a fire. Raining again! Send the kids back to school it was great til they broke up 😂😂

I think it can vary, depending on leaseholds and freeholds. In my Mum's case the flats were leasehold and there was a reserve fund for major repairs even though it still didn't cover the whole amount needed.

We have spent many happy times at Hardraw Steve. It is Mr H's home territory. We have spent New Year at the Hawes site and the walk to Hardraw and a drink and lunch in the pub was our New Year's day tradition.
