Toilet cleaning - a question

"Moulesy: "Other" ways, Ian, are not necessarily "better" ways, they are just "different" ways.
I don't remember saying in my post that they were better - I presumed you meant that were all entitled to say why we prefer to do things 'differently' (in whatever way we choose).
And yes, toilet facilities are so important to us that if they aren't excellent we will move on elsewhere! We have done that on perhaps half a dozen occasions in thirty-seven years."
Val - you're absolutely right, we're all entitled to say why we do things the way we do. Neitherof us have used the word "better" - indeed, I pointed out in my reply to you that there are old and bad facilities and practices wherever one goes.
The fact that you've moved on 6 times beacause you weren't happy with the facilities ( that's 6 times more than us! ) is absolutely your choice though one I personally difficult to understand. (I assume none of those were club sites though! )

Tree huggers are one thing, but only in the "club" could you find "Toilet Huggers".
I'm pretty sure there are others on this forum who, in their youth after a good evening's drinking, were 'toilet huggers' as, with their head down the bowl and their insides threatening to leave in an upward direction, they tried to slow down the rate at which the world around them was now spinning!

I have only once left a site due to the toilet/shower conditions. That was probably well over 30 years ago when I paid for a few nights at a commercial site, drove on pitch, visited the toilets, hitched up, drove to reception and demanded a refund! Went elsewhere.
Visited the site at Flamingo Park Zoo many years ago and again over 30 years hence (Before Flamingo Land). On arrival you were given a toilet roll!! That gave a clue . We enjoyed our 3 night stay as it was lovely to be able to wander around the zoo in the evening after all the day visitors had gone. Large paddocks and, compared to the site, well kept. We used our own facilities.
Caravan Club facilities were always clean even if dated

Exactly, I consider myself to be a confident and competent caravaner/tower, having towed as north as you can go in Scotland and southwards, and feel completely at home driving abroad (having spent most summer holidays up to 21 in Italy). But, for me, a holiday is being in my van on site. The actual towing while enjoyable is time consuming. If I want a hot summer holiday in Spain then its a plane. Nothing about confidence.

I did find the comment about getting a few more years in to build confidence highly amusing seeing as JVB displays a 45 year membership sticker as an avatar.
It definitely isn't about confidence and all about choice. I'm happy with my choice to fly abroad and caravan in the uk. There isn't a rule book.
On topic I found the closure of the block for cleaning always seemed to coincide with my desire to use it so I solved that problem by using the caravan instead. I've been trying to remember if I've been on a site in the uk which keeps the block open during cleaning and I think the only one was a haven site. I suppose it's just the way it is.
More annoying for tent users than me though.

Once you have been caravaning a bit longer you will feel more like traveling further afield. It takes time to get the conference to take the caravan to far off places.
No problem for me with confidence as I drive much larger vehicles than a caravan. It is the "further afield" that creates the problem. If I wanted to go to the European continent it would be nine hours of travelling, plus required breaks and overnight halts, and whatever time it takes to get across water to Europe - and again the same back home. Add on an indeterminate amount of time for delays due to roadworks, accidents, just too many holidaymakers on the roads, strikes, bad weather and you will see I could be spending a week just getting to Calais and back.
That is not what I go caravanning to experience. However, if you want to pay me to do it my rates as a long distance intercontinental driver are available on request. It would help fund more time doing something enjoyable with my caravan.

yes it is a shame that some are ridiculed for their choice on not towing over there and have to justify their choices, and hence taking a topic off thread. As usual if you can't give good counter arguments it is easier for some posters to attack a person's choices - play the man not the ball thing.
Back on topic, who knows why the club closed for cleaning? Could be H&S, could be the best way to ensure they are kept to the standards the club is known for - see how many non club sites are often described as being up to caravan club standard, could be that's the best way with the set of wardens on site?
Whatever the reason, the club has chosen to work that way, the choice and method works extremely well. there appears from the above that a toilet is always available. But as always if you consider this short closure too long then don't use club sites?

Is it not "Motorhomes" that the rebrand is attempting to attract? Motor Caravans have been part of The Caravan Club since a date so far back in time some people were using horses.
My take on the "Closed for Cleaning" is that it is probably considerably faster and more effective to clean a block one cleaning process at a time rather than one item at a time. [This comment will not mean anything to those who have never done it.]

I must admit, we thought that this facility was a little on the basic side.......but plenty of fresh air while doing the necessary!

I'm quite amused & surprised by the number of members who must plan their holidays around the cleaning times of on site oblutions blocks .
Needless to say we use our holiday time while on site to explore the surrounding area & our main concern is the weather & travel so we get the maximum enjoyment while at our new destination .
Enjoy your holiday time , how ever you spend it ..........😉

Hi - sorry the site was White Water. And just to say, we were packed up and ready to go with van toilet emptied at the time. The disabled toilet was also closed as the lady was actually doing it at the time along with both men's and ladies entrances blocked off. My husband went at 10.30 and I went at 11.50 and neither of us were allowed in!
