Advice on sites

Hello there.  We are planning a trip to Venice this summer with a stop over in the Alsace region of France.  We are thinking of a 5 day stay at Camping Clair Vacances near Colmar.  I would appreciate any information regarding this site.  For our return we intend to have a one night stop near Radstat in Austria at Forellencamp. Information regarding access to this campsite or other camps in the area would be of great help.  We are also thinking of staying at Camping Aichelberg , near Goppingen in Germany for a couple of days.  Again any information regarding this site would help us in planning.  Any other advice on sites en route would be greatly appreciated.  Many thanks.

That sounds a lovely trip and sensible choices.

Google is giving me over 150 reviews for the Alsace site and surely that will answer all your questions on that one. There are fewer reports for the others but they sound to be good choices, and nothing is going to be critical for a one or two night stop, is it.

Good wishes. Hope it goes well.

We stayed at Clair Vacances some years ago and found it a delightful site, there are some pictures in this review I would recommend a visit to Colmar which is not very far away.

Re. your plans to stop off in Germany (on the way down I assume) and Austria (on your return journey). I'm sure both sites are fine for short stop overs. The Kärnten area of Austria around Villach is peppered with sites in beautiful surroundings and is well worth a couple of nights at least if you have time. I'm sure Dianne will give you some recommendations for these. I suspect the site east of Stuttgart is more of a transit site and there are more picturesque sites a little further south around Fussen and the Allgau region.

Have you decided on where to stay near Venice?

Hi....First can I thank you for your input...Having read David’s blog I think we shall book Clair Vacances.  If I give you our route it may sort out any confusion.  We intend to leave Alsace and travel through Switzerland using the San Bernadino tunnel and find a site near Lugano, probably the club bookable one. The next day we will arrive at Camping Ca Savio, Venice,  which we have used before.  For the return we shall use the Austrian route. We have previously stayed near Villach but this year we want to go further north, hence the search near Radstadt.  Another reasonable day will bring us near Stuttgart where we shall break the journey for a day or two and visit Kircheim and other pretty towns.  Two further days will bring us back to Calais with an overnight at Camping Officiel, which we know, near Arlon.  I agree that for an overnight stay the camp is not critical but it would be nice to know that the access is not narrow, steep or difficult.  Thanks again for any advice.

Good to hear you are returning to Ca Savio - we are due there shortly and did have a few misgivings re. mosquitoes but I've been told they shouldn't be a problem!!! We've got 3 - 4 day stopovers in Luzerne, Garda and Innsbruck on way in/out to break the journey. Enjoy your trip.

I assume you mean the St Gottard tunnel so you would go Colmar, Basel, St Gottard, Lugano. We try and avoid stopping in Switzerland due to the cost of sites and food but if it is a Club bookable I guess it might be reasonable. You can get through Switzerland easily from Colmar in a day but there are not that many options in Italy close to the border.

If you have the time I highly recommend a small detour to Locarno then on to Cannobio on Lake Maggiore which is only a further 9 km. The lake is stunning and you can easily drop back to Locarno and rejoin the motorway to Italy. There is a recent post on sites on Maggiore.

    Hi Hitchglitch

Indeed I do mean the San Bernadino tunnel...this is to try to avoid the heavy traffic through the Gotthard tunnel.  This route is a little further but it is a quieter run via  Zurich and Chur to rejoin the Gotthard route at Bellinzona.  The tunnel is only about 4 miles long and I think not that well known.  You are correct though regarding sites just into Italy, I cannot find any.  I also agree with you about lake Maggoire, it is lovely.

OK, understood. You can occasionally get delays at St. Gottard at weekends and busy times. Had a picnic once on the motorway whilst waiting for the traffic to restart! Don't give it much thought these days as we always travel out of the main season but we did get held up a bit last year. Of course the pass has been modernised so you won't get delayed for several hours because there is always that option.

We have stayed a few times overnight at Campaggio al Censo at Clara near Bellinzona. Nice little site but I think about 60 Euros - outrageous!

We have only stayed there once (we prefer Camping Miramare at Punta Sabbioni because it's in walking distance of the ferries) They seem to, on a weekly basis spray to kill the insects. I don't recall us having an issue. Despite what I said above I don't want to put you off as it's a good site with lots of facilities and an easy walk into Ca Savio. When we visit we just require a base from which to visit Venice.

The San Bernadino tunnel sounds like an interesting alternative route, have you used it in the past? We've used the St Gottard tunnel for many years but have only been delayed for more than about 30 minutes on one occasion (last August). However we've often experienced delays on the motorway around Basel. The San Bernadino route looks slightly longer but its good to try alternative routes. Sites just over the Italian side of the St Gottard route are limited and all will be fully booked in August. We tried about 6 sites for an overnight stop last August and none had vacancies. There were lots of French units in the area last year which is unusual. Our preference along the Adriatic coast is Camping Capalonga but it's not as close to Venice as Ca Savio although boat trips to Venice do run from next to the site.

Thanks for that link David. Very informative. This is our first trip with van to Italy although we have driven there before stopping in hotels etc. Getting excited as we are off in a few days time.
