I agree that the cancellation date should be extended beyond 72 hours.....I think 2 weeks would be reasonable.
So you are lucky you seem to know 2 weeks in advance you or someone is going to be ill, your car will break down, your house flood, someone is going to die etc?
Please can you tell me the lottery numbers tonight when you look in your crystal ball

I would not like to think that people with these problems are driving amongst us, but the recent "bin lorry" scandal in Glasgow shows how easily it is done.

I really like the 72 hour period as we use the late availability section a lot. We don't get a lot of notice when a weekend becomes free so from a purely selfish point of view I'd like to keep it as it is.
2 weeks would be no use to me at all. Might help those with regular work patterns or those who don't work but not me.
I don't mind paying a deposit but I'd rather not.
I've got the other club for that sort of thing

I'm afraid that it happens unfortunately without warning, not all illnesses/attacks give prior warnings, that was the reason for my original post-not a 'muppet' but a possible poorly person.

The club says its does not record such data. However I am curious? Do people wander in or contact any other leisure organisation that they use and ask for such data?
Does anyone contact Toby's for example and ask how many people cancelled or how many no shows there were? Well I don't - I just use try and book a meal, if its full I don't start to get hot and bothered thinking it's all due to late cancellations, or no shows, or even no deposits. I simple find somewhere else. Or if I do get in with, well we're full but we'squeeze you in, or we've had a late cancellation I then don't spend my time there looking round at all the empty tables, I just enjoy my meal happy that I got in. I don't question whether Toby's is running its business well, I'm just happy with, and enjoy the end product.
The same applies to club sites?

but, what would be interesting to compare would be how many "no shows" or very late cancellations there are for Thomson/First Choice/Thomas Cook holidays there are when those customers have paid several months in advance........
Because all the quoted reasons for late cancellations above such as illness/car breakdown blah blah equally apply, but somehow I suspect (and don't know obviously) that when they have had to make a significant financial commitment they are a lot more resourceful in getting to the airport on time.........

yes and very true, but there is an essential difference in a holiday on a club site and with Thomas Cook? We have just had to pay the balance on our summer Thomas Cook holiday and it was in the thousands. Now obviously the difference between this type of holiday and even a two week club stay in terms of cost is huge, but even if the club charged deposits I could probably 'afford' to lose it for a summer holiday and could certainly afford to lose a weekend's club site deposit unlike the deposit for Thomas cooks.
And of curse I've taken out holiday insurance to cover myself if the worst happens.

I doubt that many cancel a booked and paid for holiday due to weather. The lack of any financial commitment makes it too easy to cancel late or simply not show up.
Incidently, I do feel able to ask the Club for statistics.......because I'm a member of the Club and pay a membership fee for that.

Of course you are able, but being a member why should the club tell you? I'm a member of various clubs, I pay my subscription to some vary large ones, I certainly don't feel they have to tell me anything provided they supply me with a good product.

But yesterday you said you didn't subscribe to the theory that paying deposits made folk less likely to cancel didn't you, or did I mis-understand? As I said then, if I was the sort to cancel because of the weather, if I'd paid a deposit, I'd leave it as late as possible before deciding not to go, thus my pitch would not become available for other members. That is the thinking behind the no-deposit system isn't it?

The thing is that our club affords us the ability to cancel or amend our bookings if our plans do not pan out for whatever reasons and I'd bet that the vast majority of us members do not take 'advantage' of this. Afterall, those very busy sites will always remain very busy even if I have to cancel for unforeseen circumstances. For the record though, I don't think I've ever cancelled, I have amended bookings mind having changed dates and sites on one or two occasions. It works and sets the club apart as a network from the samey commercials, a real bonus I feel.
