The Club are only doing what other holiday businesses do, in terms of a lot of the full facility sites and making the most of busy sites, at times they are likely to be well used. They do provide alternatives a lot cheaper for those who can manage flexibilty, which is more than some businesses do. Some sites are still £14 per night regardless of how many are in tourer, as are a lot of CLs, some even cheaper.

Ilfracombe site is £14 per night, possibly for all occupants of tourer?

£14 is for one adult. Two adults brings price to £18.50 according to blurb at top left of booking page. Children are free however.

    However it says elsewhere

Freedom for £14 (That seems to be correct price)

A great value all inclusive fee for a standard pitch, 2 adults and all children.

Which ever it sounds good value.

To answer IanH's question re school holidays for Whitsun, it would appear that most schools break up 26th May until 5th June. However not the Scottish schools as they do not get a holiday at this time of year, so if you want to be relatively child free you know where to go during that week wink me I'll be somewhere in France probably laughing

We had a midweek discount  at Hillhead last week which made it much better value.

    Thanks all- interesting replies.

Both sites are in Devon, we've been to Oakdown before so we know the only difference in facilities is the pool at hillhead. Both prices were for same dates, fully serviced pitch for 2 adults 2 kids. I'm sure Hillhead is lovely but for a family with school age kids this is a lot for a week in half term. I can and have found cheaper, it's just an observation that the club may not be pricing similar to market. Oakdown has won AA campsite of the year it could reasonably charge high commercial site prices but is still nearly 50% cheaper for that week.....

If the club can't compete then surely it should reconsider its pricing? Or is that the plan..... price out families or people on budgets or just savy people who won't pay more than market rate?

Yes they do yell money grabbing or what.

We will be elsewhere and paying no more than 19€ more like 13 - 15€smile

I wonder who uses the pool at Hillhead. If its a kids attraction then the pricing seems to drive families away. Perhaps they could fill it in and create a few more pitches and then reduce the prices  accordingly.

The site always seems to be heavily booked so the price must be competitive. I do not know how the other site compares but £50 a night is possible at some sites in the area. As with all things in life if you do not like the price you do not have to buy.

Well I've used the pool at Hillhead, there are two pools one for young children and an adjoining pool for older users. They are lovely small pools, warm and in the open air and included in the site price. When the site is busy certain times are allocated for use. The children's pool has good play equipment. Fully life guarded the pools are a real bonus but no doubt expensive to run.

I dont know Hillhead at all. Just out of interest, is use of the pool included in the nightly fee, or is it extra?

Perhaps  a  charge for use of the pool would help to keep prices more reasonable for the rest of the year,  and for those who want the location but not the additional facilities.

I have no problem paying for the provision of a toilet block/dishwash/laundry room, even if we mainly use our own facilities, but a pool is a bit special.

    Restaurant/bar/shop should be self financing.

Off peak the prices are quite reasonable for where it is,and the area, and on a par or cheaper than other sites with the same facilities in the area, the heated pool is not open all year, and prices in the shop and bar are not a "rip off" as found with other companies,                         We would go again this year but, other places have to be visited,       There was normally a large influx of Scots at begining of July when we usually went for our three weeks

That will be the Glasgow Fair Fortnight JVB.

There are other free facilities at Hillhead, the entertainment for children and adults during holiday times is included in the price (it's low key stuff and no-one has to join in.) Prices reflect what is available through the year.

Could think to visit in September, but not at around £25 per night for 2 adults.

Presume there is no mid week discount available then.

Would not use pool, nor are we into eating or drinking out much, so looks like we need to find an alternative.

It's very popular in September. After the school holidays finish the site fills with retirees! I expect there is a MWD a bit later, it certainly made a difference to the cost of our recent visit. The Start Bay site is in a pleasant spot, don't know if the prices are a bit better then?

Same here in June, 30 days in SW France, extremely large 250 sq m pitch with hedge border, 16amp fully serviced...even ethernet cable for free internet & wifi. Full facilities incl bar , restaurant, pool complex, spa, etc etc. and only a 10 min cycle  ride to the beach..all for 17€ pn. However the price does increase in July/August.

Overnight stop on way down at Durtal by the le Loire is 13€.

Note to self...Must ask David for name of the CL near Portsmouth he is using for the ferry o/n stop.

All of which has no bearing on the price of sites in this country, GTP, whether it be Hillhead or elsewhere. It is not comparing like with like as has been pointed out many, many times before.

Have you checked out Widdecombe Farm, no pool, but there is a bar, restaurant and entertainment. £21 for a fully serviced pitch over Easter plus £2 if you want to put up an awning. Even with a dog £2.50 a night it still works out cheaper than Hillhead. Its an adult only site though.

Looks like there is no MWD at Hillhead till October, so will have to look elsewhere as we  need to be back home before the second Monday in October.

We use Hillhead, not because it's expensive or cheap but because of where it is. We like the South Hams and Dartmouth so have easy access to that area. The nearest site to Dartmouth on the other side has now become a huge retail area so that's all gone. frown Hillhead is on an excellent bus route, we love the river Dart and we enjoy going to Steamer Quay and Totnes too for the same reasons. Other sites might be cheaper but that's the way it is. I wouldn't go abroad for cheap or expensive sites I'd go because I wanted to see a particular area. Personally I'm not a fan of big inclusive sites but Hillhead happens to be in a good spot. Equally for the OP writing about Oakdown, this is in East Devon and gives access to Sidmouth, Seaton, Beer and Lyme Regis. It depends where you want to go. smile
