Cost of CMHC sites- Hillhead

I know this is a popular topic but I have not personally experienced the huge unnecessary price difference between CMHC until I booked 7 nights serviced pitch at Hillhead June half term then friends wanted to meet at Oakdown, also serviced pitch 5star AA  gold commercial  site only difference was a swimming pool at Hillhead.... 2 adults 2 kids

Hillhead £404      Oakdown £227

We are a family the club says we're the future caravaners they want to attract, encourage. I accept one has a pool, they are not in exactly same location but facilities very similar. how can the club justify 50% more?

I think you should email the club and tell them what you've said on here. I'd love to hear the response. There are similar threads running on this subject at present. We all need value for money and best price possible.  How will the club know if no one tell them? They don't always read posts on here 😉

    Have a great time.

Bakers2, even when you write or email them you have to wait 20 working days for a reply, 20 working days is a month in my book.

And don't forget we still need to foot the bill for the wasteful rebranding.

Many here moan about the commercial site fees at peak times. Are the CC that far out on a like for like facility site (ie pools, bars etc). You also need to factor in that Haven for example quote their prices for 6 users, not individually.

Yes, I agree that Club sites are very expensive.

But the thing that worries me more about this thread is the mention of 'June half term'........please, someone tell me that they aren't invading June as well now! surprised

I agree it does seem on the pricey side when compared to the clubs other offerings. As we are retired we try and avoid peak times. However, as it is a long time from June to September we have booked a week in the summer peak  at Hawes, on a service pitch. I know it is in a totally different area, not even remotely sea side, but there are few similar sites in the immediate area, so you might think this would inflate prices. Despite this for the OP it would be £13.20 a night less, £92.40 for the week.

Please CAMC don't think of putting pools and bars clubs etc at other sites, if that's what it does to the prices.

    Agree with that, Steve.

We've been to Seacroft a couple of times but have never seen the swimming pool open. Seems like an expensive luxury, if it's only used a couple of months in the year.

We were at Hillhead last year in mid October. Lovely site and convenient for those of us that use public transport but I did think at the time it was expensive. I doubt the site was half full and was surprised there was no mid-week discount. I suspect that we are expected to pay for the additional facilities whether we use them or not?

We were there the same time as you, and have booked to go again in April arriving 19th for 9 nights 2 adults £160.00 with mid week discount. I think 7 nights was £127.00. We like the site and it's location. been there lots of times. As for the facilities we only use the pool when it is open not the bar.

Price wise Fisherman I see little cost differentials on most commercial sites that I might use as an alternative to CC sites on my tour routes

I can see a differential of £177 in the example in the op

Differential may well be less for me depending on child prices. However they are hardly like for like. Of the two I would probably prefer Oakdown but it does not have a pool, evening meals, or a bar. Not sure about indoor games area.

Swimming pools are seriously expensive to heat, treat and staff, outdoor one's very much so. Some of the cost wil be reflected in the site prices. Economy of scale is factored in as well, smaller number of pitches, cost is spread over less visitors. Whatever happened to using that good old fashioned free coastal attraction, the sea?

Never been to Hillhead - and not likely to at those prices! In fairness, as the OP says, Hillhead and Oakdown are in different parts of the county and Putts Corner, just down the road from Oakdown is approximately the same price, assuming we're talking about May half term (it's actually a fair bit cheaper for most of June!)

But the OP has done exactly the right thing - if the price isn't right vote with your wheels - there are loads of alternatives in Devon.

I suspect tho pool at Hillhead is Lifeguarded when open AD, certainly pools I have used abroad had no lifeguards in duty,

I think it is a difference in culture as well, overseas pools seem the norm whether at hotels or campsites, much like eating outdoors is more popular? i swam every morning before breakfast in Greece. Lovely way to start the day. Some of our best memories of Cornwall are of getting onto the beach fairly early, straight in for a dip, then out and up onto beach for breakfast cooked on little camping stove! Those coast side pitches abroad are certainly calling us!

When in such regions I have been out in the lovely hot sun and return to my apartment a dip before an evening tipple whilst sat with a crossword before going out for a meal is often called for by me. However it does not have the same appeal in the UK smile

You do get lovely weather in UK as well ET. We had two weeks on Dartmoor a couple of years ago in September, not a drop of rain (in fact spring that fed water to cottage we rented dried up!), we swam in the River Dart, cold getting in but glorious once you had! There are some stunning wild swimming places in this country, We have had some long very hot holidays in UK. Not guaranteed as much as abroad I grant you, but then look at last Spring on continent, in certain places it was awful.

how can the club justify 50% more?

Whilst Oakdown is 50% of the price wanted for Hillhead, the latter shows an approximate increase on Oakdowns price of 81%.

Can you also please explain IanH's concern about June half term as we would also be concerned about this. Is it in May, as Mousey suggests, or in June?

We too are shunning a CC site (Lady Margarets Park) next week as we can find an independent site for half of the price wanted by the CC. OK I know they're not quite the same as the site I'm heading for is an adult only one would quite happily have headed for LMP if the price had been right.

I think there have been quite a few comments from members about incorporating next week in the Easter catch all  Full Season rating band.

The more empty pitches there are on club sites, the greater chance there is of prices coming down. I won't be paying top whack prices, there are often cheaper alternatives available..

The Oakdown Site referred to in the OP also has the increased prices for the next two weeks. I suspect most do. Also for two adults on that site awnings are £3.45, dogs are £2.70 pitch £25.95 Children £3.35 a night

Hill head £32.70 Fi to Sunday. £26.35 in the week for two adults.  (kiddies are £1 a night)

So Hillhead looks very good considering the increased facilities and location and more so if you have a dog, awning or both!

Swimming pool at Castillo-de-Banos (Spain) was open the entire time we were there (Nov-March) and was cleaned/purified every day.  I never saw a single person using it!  The sea was actually warmer - though not particularly inviting. Now, in Canaries or Cyprus I would expect to swim in the sea on Christmas day  ..... but how do you get a caravan there?

Why would I? I was merely commenting on the prices quoted in the OP. Not interested in the prices for Hillhead or Oakdown. If I wanted to go to either of these places then I would check them out.
