The Ospreys are back !!
April starts the season of 'Osprey hunting' for me .
So off to RSPB Loch Garten, on-line of course, and the sites up, just about, but no Ospreys as yet.
So over to Scottish Wildlife Trusts "Loch of The Lowes" Website and, and 
not one but two Ospreys & mating in full view of the cameras ! Its not the aged "Lady" but a new female now in residence, so we'll have to see if the old girl turns up at all. Well she is believed to be in the high twenties now, darn near Geriatric as far as Ospreys go ! I understand Rutland has a number of arrivals so I must keep watching Loch Garten for more tales of Bad Bird Behaviour !!

Just found this "Orphaned" post of mine from 2 years ago and it is just about the right time to resuscitate it.
The ospreys will be preparing to leave West Africa ( Senegal area) or even the south west of Iberia after, hopefully, a winter fattening up
for the breeding season in Northern & western Europe ! Keep your koi carps protected folks but enjoy the magnificent sight of Ospreys fishing when they arrive !!B

On Wednesday we were 'bird-watching' down at the Etang at Leucate in the Aude region of France, and saw two Ospreys fishing. It's apparently on one of the migration routes north for birds of prey. Let's hope they were birds heading back to Britain somewhere - either to ABM's Loch Garten, or to our Glaslyn site near Porthmadog in North Wales!

From the following it sounds unlikely to be headed for Britain - the British birds appear to follow a different route up the west coast of France, then across the Bay of Biscay. The 'live migration blog' shows one of the Rutland ospreys coming up the west coast of Africa:

The Glaslyn female Osprey (known as Mrs G) arrived back at the Glaslyn nest today! Another safe migration - let's hope her mate (known as Aran) returns soon too, so they can get started on egg-laying. Last year laying was complicated because of a number of useless or 'unfaithful' suitors, and a situation a bit like a Bryan Rix farce, but eventually Aran overcome all the other contenders, and got rid of their eggs. Mrs G laid two more very late eggs, but the two resulting chicks were raised to fledging, and although late starters they left on their first migration.

Can't get anything from Loch Garten at present
They were due to get "Fibre" in over the winter but, while that may have been done, they have had an appalling run of bad luck with the cameras !!I'm afraid its still not working, so I'm hoping against hope that it gets going before I head up there on Jolly Hollys or I'll be inclined to tell 'em that Bri's none too pleased !

Apparently the camera at Loch Garten is up and running ok BUT it does need particular kit to access it. !! Try "The Blog" for details !!
I've followed the latest advice & if you cant get a picture via the RSPB link Then go to CARNYX & then click on FLASH and all should then be well { it is for me anyway !! }
Anyway, EJ the female ( should not mention it but the lady is 20 years old this year ) is back & waiting for Odin, he long term mate. Come on boyo, get a move on !! Keeping the ladies waiting, indeed

As I've posted on the R S P B Thread Both EJ & Odin, the usually resident Ospreys are back at Loch Garten reserve 'oop north'
'Had a quick peep at lunch time & there they were, enjoying each others company
.Hope there are no intruders around at Glaslyn or Loch Garten this year ( Flirty Home Wreckers !! )

The female at Loch Of The Lowes last year was not ringed but the observer watching the Video recognised her from " A Fleck in Her Eye" !! -- his/her phrase. Now if we check the range, the average diameter of an ospreys eye, the pixel count ,, ,, ,, ,, ,, ,,
Well just let me say I wish I could afford cameras and lenses of that quality !!

There are now two nests under observation at Glaslyn. Mrs G and her new suitor from last year Aran are nesting on the original nest, and a second pair (including one of the 'Flirty Home Wreckers' mentioned above). have taken over the new nest site. There are supposed to be Live Streams from both nests, but I can't acess them this morning.

Just had a peep at Loch Garten Nest --- one osprey head & tail visible in a large deep nest of snow !!
I know the plumage is waterproof to a fair degree, but imitating a "Snow Bird" is ridiculous !!
Probably Frozen Trout for tea tonight, EJ !!

I got your Glaslyn site OK Valda, One on Nest, one on the Branch. But its not snowed at all as far as I can see -- but very sunny & noisy wind.

I still can't access the Live Stream - and despite clearing cookies, cache, rebooting, updating Flash Player, it's not working for me. Anyone else having problems? I just get an error message saying Error loading player: No playable sources found

No sorry, still 'Error loading player: No playable sources found' and that's on Chrome, Firefox, or Internet Exlorer. I have the latest version of Flash Player, and no problems watching the Loch Garden live stream, or the Cumbria Wildlife Trust webcam - just the Glaslyn one.
Any more ideas?

Got it now! Had to use Chrome settings, go through nine different steps, and changed the 'Plug Ins' settings to 'Ask permission'. It doesn't ask permission, but does now allow me to view the Ospreys - and Mrs G is currently pruning her feathers in full view.

There is a bit of a 'Brian Rix Farce' or a bit of bigamy going on at Glaslyn, with the male Osprey (Aran) having two nests on the go. He is continuing to take fish to Mrs G on the first Glaslyn nest, and she has three eggs, but he is also regularly delivering fish to the second nest, where a second female (5F) has now got two eggs! Today he has caught four fish and shared them equally between nests.
Anyone admire his stamina!????

Sounds like the female last year at Llyn Clywedog. Her mate was thrown out by another male and the eggs destroyed before a new clutch was laid. According to the warden the female used to go over Dyfi to visit her original mate. Will be interesting to see what the situation is in a couple of weeks when we are up there.

I occasionally [at different times of day] take a look at the RSPB live web cam of the Osprey nest @Loch Garten but to date have not managed to see any activity apart from head movements or slight wriggle. Does anyone know the most likely time of day when I might see more movement/activity ?

Poor fisher at Clywedog. I was there fishing yesterday and saw the Osprey try three time to catch a fish and failed each time. Never saw it going back to the nest with a fish. Perhaps it was scared of the tweeters posting abuse at it as they did at the Dovey Osprey project because one chick died.

Saddest of news from Loch Garten alas ! Male Odin has been driven away by young intruders, EJ the female has lost all 3 chicks now, not sure if one of the intruders will try to take over the nest & resident female
As we have said before -- this nature thing is hard to take at times.
