Site Fees
Hi, just been looking for a club site in the south west and really fancied a visit to Hillhead until I checked the prices! £53.20 per night for a family of four on a serviced pitch - some mistake surely even for August.

Good point, Steve. We're talking Torbay in August and it's going to be pricey everywhere.
Hillhead has always been one of CC's more expensive sites because of its extra facilities and I suspect it'll be similarly priced on a like for like basis.

Have to agree Torbay sites in August are busy so Hillhead with its facilities is most likely on a par pricewise with others in the area offering the same facilities.
Apologies for being off topic & apologies to the OP nelliethedog for asking but were you nelliethehooker & if so is it now easy to change avatar details as many have said they were unable to do so not too long ago.

As TW says its not the run of the mill club site with:
an outdoor heated swimming pool and children's pool (Jun - Sept), playground, play area and an indoor complex housing a games room, shop, bar, restaurant and takeaway service for all the conveniences you could want. Hillhead Club Site also hosts a varied selection of evening entertainment and themed events,
All this stuff will incur extra expenditure for the club (how much does it cost to heat a swimming pool, the cost of bar and restaurant staff for example) and hence the higher site fees.
But I notice that despite the cost the non awning pitches are all booked up in August and for service pitches 19 days in August are already booked. In fact you won't be able to get more than three consecutive days if you try and book now.

Hillhead is fairly expensive all year. We were there in early October last year and it was just over £20 a night, for two people, on a standard pitch and the site was only about half full. Given all the facilities the site has it does not surprise me. You could save £4 a night by not having a service pitch? Perhaps look at the prices of sites around and about as has been suggested before deciding.

Isn't that the Isle of Wight rather than Torbay? Think of the ferry fares.

Nellie, have you looked at Ramslade - the CC site? It's not far from Hillhead and is situated between Totnes and Paignton. There's even a quick way down into Paignton although it's not suitable for towing or for most MHs.

No we are not the same. ntd has pinch my idea!!!!
N1805 I think that it's quite hard to change ones avatar name, you have to go through HO, although it's quite easy to change one's photo.

Hang on a minute.......I thought that the argument put forward by those who favour the CC above all else, was that commercial sites make extra money from all their 'extra' activities (shops, restaurants, bars etc) and that was why they can offer site fees at far better rates than the CC.
Now it seems that those same people suggest that Hillhead (a pretty ordinary site, as I recall) simply has to charge nightly rates of over £50/night because it has invested in shops, bars, restaurants etc.
How does thst work then?

Very good point Ian
Let me quote a comment made recently by one of our members who always criticises commercials such as Haven at peak times:
The CC pricing structure may not be perfect but in this respect it is doing exactly the right thing in offering families a reasonably priced alternative to the exorbitant costs of some commercial sites at peak times. It might not provide all singing, all dancing laid on entertainment etc but it does offer families who want a relaxed break at peak times good value and long may that continue.
IMO Hillhead is doing exactly this - copying the prices charged by others in the same area at peak times - because some families can/will afford it . Admittedly Hillhead might have similar facilities but where are the much lauded lower prices at peak as a reason for being unable to offer lower prices off peak

No problem, N. Just don't for get to save your changed photo. You might also have to clear your cache before it will show up as your new photo.

"...one of our members....
I didnt think you were a member "Ovaltineys" but only borrowed your sister's magazine?
But then of course we all know who you really are Burt, back again in a new disguise. Well, at least some of us do, CC HQ however.........
But carry on, please do...... hope you are enjoying the new website!

Ok, so maybe the price reflects the facilities, location and time of year. I was probably comparing it to our last visit to the area when we stayed at Widdecombe Farm , currently approx. £150 per week for a serviced pitch in high season! PS, to NTH here's a pic of NTD !

At random: Modbury Caravan Club Site in Devon is £22.30 a night.
Widdicombe Farm is £24 a night. (OK an offer for those that wish to stay for 7 nights is 7 for the price of 6 in order to attract custom)
So realistically little price differential there. Widdicombe offers a bar and restaurant. Guess which I would choose.

Widdicombe Farm is further inland and overlooking the by-pass as I recall. It's adult only and 4 adults plus awning on a service pitch seems to be £38.50 p/n or £270 p/w in high season. There's a charge for dogs and a booking fee. They want a deposit but I can't be doing with looking up the T&Cs. Yes, it is cheaper than Hillhead but it's not really comparing like with like especially in terms of location.

£24 p/n is for a standard service pitch which I think means just EHU. I quoted for fully serviced but the Premium is dearer still and don't forget the extras!

It's plain for all to see, Kjell, once you know what to look for.

FYI , I am not a member and my sister is.

Non members of the CC are allowed on here. Why is it that there are a couple of posters who are continually critical of any new member's CC status instead of contributing to what is being discussed on the thread. We should be welcoming new members. Not trying to push them away.
Site fees are site fees, no-body has their arm twisted up their backs to use a site where it is considered non value for money. They go elsewhere. So if you want to tour a certain area you research sites which represent value for money. Those may be Commercial sites, C&CC sites or CC sites.

Absolutely, choice is the key! What we do not want is all the providers to be the same, working to the same business plan, rules, procedures and same provision. This for me is where our club wins out, it is that very difference which attracts so many of us!

We have some very nice non-members posting here and it's good to see them. We also have some who are not what/who they seem but they provide entertainment.

They do indeed! Contravenes CT guidelines, but I don't worry as I can do nothing about it! Good fun making a spot though. As is the indignant rush to defend the barricades once a spot is made! Good to get that confirmation!
Apologies to the OP. Just never know where the doppelgangers are going to pop up next!

but which are the ones charging over £40 then?
