Sanef Toll Tag

Just received an offer from Eurotunnel for this.

any comments on whether it's worthwhile or not ?

we have motorhome and plan to tour 2/3 times next year. like the idea of not have to worry about having money ready and getting OH clambering out to feed the toll point.

if any motorhomers have experience does sanef get the weight classification ok every time ? Not sure how it would know how to charge accurately

The Tag is well worth getting as we found out this year -
    https://youtu.be/zRosz3EPtGM

We had the ATMB Tag at €3.60 for each month, or months, we used the Tag – all our Toll journeys were in July so it has cost us €3.60 so far this year.

Have a look around for other offers because all the Tag businesses in France want you to sign up – Eurotunnel's offer may be the best but shop around.

Weight of your MH doesn't affect the Classe you're charged - but height does – 3metres or less is Classe 2 – above that height you pay a higher Classe.

You can get a motorway tag from several sources as well as from Eurotunnel - from various French motorway companies, from their agents in the UK, and from the Caravan Club. Some of us just wait till one of them has a special offer. All of them charge different prices, some charge via a bank direct debit, and some via a credit card,  but they all work efficiently right across France. Mine cost me €3 postage but was free of start up and annual costs, and I only pay normal tolls plus €1.60 per month when in use. A good bit of kit.

The autoroute pay stations in France measure height pretty accurately but not weight. If your vehicle is marginally over 3500kg they won't notice, but if it's a tag axle, 5000kg  heavy motorhome then the standard tag is not for you.

We have had a SANEF Tag since owning a motorhome. Margaret would struggle to lean out of the window to either get toll ticket or pay so the Tag has been a blessing for her. As has been said there are various "brands" of tag which all do the same thing. One possible advantage of the SANEF Tag is that the website is UK based so all in English. Another thing worth mentioning is that with a motorhome, depending if you have a roof overhang you may need to experiment with the placing of the tag. I have mine at the bottom of the windscreen which works well.

Like MM said use the HGV lane that's what we do, they tend not to 'mess' around like some cars and the lane is wider and the barrier higher set so the' tag' gest read easier. Once you've built up some confidance with the 'tag' you can try out the 30kph lane, they work very well not yet done the 30kph just a gentle drive through the 'tag' get read easy as there is more distance between points soyou don't have to slow down too much.

Thanks MM- It would have helped me if I'd read the Sanef leaflet before posting on here (or if I'd remembered previous posts on tags)  Classe 2 vehicles should use non height restricted lanes.   Aarrgh!  pre holiday panic + old age creeping on!

    Thanks for the info.

Has anyone used the Vinci Autoroute's  tag?

EuroTraveller is yours a Vinci/ASF tag?

Their charges seem the same whether you apply from UK or France and much cheaper than Sanef. They have a website in English here which confirms you can pay from a UK bank account.

    Any info?

No mine came from ATMB when they were giving them away for free. I paid postage for delivery, but no set up fee, no annual charge, and they just charge me normal tolls plus 1.60 euros per month in any month I use it.

It looks as though a cheaper option is to use the ATMB  Liber-t service to obtain a tag, but it looks a s though the ongoing costs of making international debit payments might prove to negate the initial savings. Has anyone tried this approach ?

    Jeff

I think it would depend on what sort of bank account you have, some allow no fee transactions and I am pretty sure ATMB might allow you to have the payments taken out of a credit card account. I use SANEF as they have a UK operation so no issues with charges. They obviously convert at the current rate to them and I have never felt their exchange rate was unreasonable. OK their charges are a little higher but if you get your TAG from Eurotunnel, or the Club if they still do it, then that difference is reduced quite a bit.

Another advantage is you can hit (not literally) the 30 kph lane and drive straight through with very little waiting. No driving up to barrier and waiting for the 'beep'

Thanks Another David. I have checked my accounts and unfortunately don't have a free euro transaction option. It appears that it will cost me about £20 per transaction to pay via 'Swift' if I proceed with this option which will make the whole process expensive.

The Sanef tag, organised from the GB, looks to be more costs effective when paying the set-up and deposits!

    Many thanks for your advice.

Last year, towards the end of the 5-year warranty on my Hyundai iX35, I invested in a Sanef toll tag for use on French autoroutes. Superb! True it's a bit more expensive than paying on demand at the toll booths but the extra convenience far outweighs the extra cost. However I've just replaced the iX35 with a new Hyundai Tucson.

And hit an immediate problem! The tag has to fit within the mottled area around the rearview mirror of course, and on the new Tucson, that area is completely covered by the mirror assembly meaning there's nowhere for the tag to fit.

However with the help of my dealer, the problem is solved so for anyone else with the same problem, here's the solution. The black plastic cover around the mirror assembly is only clipped in place so, whilst it's a tight fit, the cover can be prised off with the aid if necessary of a screwdriver. Once the cover is out of the way, the tag can be wedged between the windscreen and the wiring. Simply clip the cover back on (it might need a few strong thumps!) and Robert is your Dad's proverbial brother!

We have a Sanef Tag - really useful IMHO.  However we changed our car last spring and although fitting the tag was no problem, we just didn't get around to it.  We kept it in the central compartment of the car (between the two seats) and whenever we come to a payage station Carol just got it out and waved it about.  It worked for us.  Kept meaning to stick it on the windscreeen but its still in the centre compartment.  laughinglaughing

I am not quite sure why SANEF say it should be fitted in the mottled area around the mirror. The only thing I could think of is that it is out of view as a security aspect. We use ours in a motorhome and it's right at the bottom of the windscreen and it works perfectly OK.

I think its because some cars have heated windscreens so the heating element wires may interfere with the signal.

Interestingly I was looking at dash cams today and fitting video from Halfords, it stated they must not be within the area covered by the drivers side wiper so I guess that applies to any toll device as well such as the SANEF tag or GO box, maybe another reason they say in the mottled area or maybe a French law?

Ours regularly came unstuck with the heat of the sun on the windscreen so we have it loose in the car pocket and I just hold it up near the windscreen when approaching the barrier. Works fine.

The clip for ours is always in place at the top of the screen, however the tag itself is in the glove box until we reach France them I put it on the clip, once through France its goes back into the glove box.

At the suggestion, earlier in this thread, that Sanef Tags could be obtained from the CC I decided to look online. There not being anything obvious in the 'Offers' section of the web site I did a search entering 'Sanef Tag'. Guess what I got?  A list of CLs with no connection whatsoever, as far as I could see, with Sanef !!   When is this website going to work anywhere near properly?

You are right John, the search on here is wayward.

But type ATMB Tag Offer into Google before 21 March 2017 and you can have a tag free of charge - just €3 postage and no set up costs or annual costs.

David, I have looked at the ATMB website and whilst it shows in English the offer of no charge for a new tag until 21st March the nitty gritty bits are all in French, only bits of which I can translate. I understand, I think, that the card is free for the first year but what happens after that? Do I get charged a subscription for subsequent years even if I don't use  the tag? What is the process if I decide to cancel after the first year and want to return the tag? Can you give me any help with these questions? Thanks in advance.
