I got my first car - an Austin Maxi (bought off the in laws) and engaging first gear could only be achieved by engaging second gear first - wonderful synchromesh! But it was 1750 cc and had 5 gears and could tow a caravan.

First car I ever bought at auction. Wasn't overly enamoured of it and sold it after six months.

Ya should have got a Princess !

I think it was Waxoyl that was sprayed into all the orifices! I did get good at filling, sanding and spraying wheel arches! Now they did rot in front of your eyes!

Also my first car. Horrible British Leyland rubbish.

I did the decent thing and put it through a hedge backwards.

aha, coincidentally I did the very same thing with a mid 70s Vauxhall viva. Totalled a hedge and knocked a small tree over, backwards. Not a mark to be seen on the car. I don't think it had crumple zones in those days

I learnt to drive in a three gear Ford Anglia (the one before the sloping back window), The gear stick was about three feet long. It was like stirring porridge.
