Living in a house with no bathroom and a pump in the yard (late 40's). We went to my grandparents for a bath and were overjoyed when we got a new council house in 1953. The luxury!
My great-grandparents lived in a quarry cottage at Elterwater. They had a pump .... and a compost toilet in a shed, which was shared with the neighbouring cottages

We all had large open soft water tanks, about a foot deep, over the larder and coal store. There was a soft water and drinking water tap in the kitchen (no hot water!) All the local Dads and lads had to climb
up and clean the soft water tanks each year as they got filled with gunge!0 -

All we took onto the beach was a bucket and spade, a thermos and a few sandwiches.
Recently we took a surf board, a body board, two kayaks, a bbq, one insulated bag full of meat/rolls/salad etc and another with drinks, a beach shelter, two chairs and a rucksac with wet suits and towels!!!! Could have done with a donkey.
