I must admit, when I had a Saab, you could only remove the ignition key when it was in first gear.

1st gear? I thought it was reverse gear

I am sure your are 100% right MolliesMummy no intended this to happen just a mad moment and there are very few of us that haven’t had one of those. Most of us make silly mistakes now and then, we are not negligent or deliberately doing these things it is
just as you say a slip up and fortunately no one hurt, he won’t slip up like that again but will still make mistakes like most of us do from time to time.

We always use parking brake on our Auto Jeep. Star Trek actor Anton Yelchin was killed by his Jeep rolling into him earlier this year. Tragically young, only 27 years old.Sad

There are stories on the news almost every week of vehicles taking off into water while occupied, oftem with tragic results. I wonder how many of these accidents involve an automatic transmission which has had an incorrect gear selected.

There is mention of a recall on the type of Jeep Yelchin owned, so could possibly be more to it than accidental. Ours has a handbrake, and as with all our cars, we just always use it.

So as well as illegally parking without applying the handbrake you are also one of the antisocial people that illegally dazzle the driver behind at night because you are too idle to apply the handbrake.

Where did he say that? I rarely use my parking brake, and never while at traffic lights etc, but if I think I'll be waiting a while I simply press the end of the transmission stalk & put it in Park.

Illegal to sit with your foot on the brake? Again, I doubt the illegality as when MB used their fly-by-brakes (SBC) when the car was stopped using 'HOLD' (foot off the brake pedal but held by the hydraulic brake circuit) the brakes lights would be on.

With respect, passing the advanced drivers test does not necessarily make you an advanced driver especially if you think sitting with your foot on the brake at night dazzling the driver behind is acceptable. All that is required in the Range Rover is a flick of a small switch and it even releases itself, is that really too much trouble

This discussion is getting out of hand and you need to read the rules of the forum. For what it is worth though I do agree that some vehicles brake lights can be dazzling and it is common courtesy to the driver behind to use the handbrake.

I can only find reference in the Highway code (114)

    Rule 114

    You MUST NOT

    • use any lights in a way which would dazzle or cause discomfort to other road users, including pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders
    • use front or rear fog lights unless visibility is seriously reduced. You
      MUST
switch them off when visibility improves to avoid dazzling other road users (see

      Rule 226
      ).

In stationary queues of traffic, drivers should apply the parking brake and, once the following traffic has stopped, take their foot off the footbrake to deactivate the vehicle brake lights. This will minimise glare to road users behind until the traffic
    moves again.

    Law
    RVLR
    reg 27

    And

    Rule 239

    • you MUST apply the handbrake before leaving the vehicle

I remember reading something quite a while ago when I was looking for something else that point sources of light (such as brake or fog lights) had a greater effect on loss of vision than an overall brigtness.

Certainly when faced with the driver in front keeping bright lights displayed once stationary, by turning on all one's own forward facing lights one can feel some of the tension ebbing away.

Generally yes, but when it states "YOU MUST or MUST NOT" it is law and refers to the relevant Road Traffic Act.

    Wording of The Highway Code

Many of the rules in the Code are legal requirements, and if you disobey these rules you are committing a criminal offence. You may be fined, given penalty points on your licence or be disqualified from driving. In the most serious cases you may be sent
to prison. Such rules are identified by the use of the words ‘MUST/MUST NOT’. In addition, the rule includes an abbreviated reference to the legislation which creates the offence. See an

There are a surprising number of cars that always have their rear fog lights on, probably because they can't remember where the switch is.

The highway code is not law it is a set of rules if it was law to use your handbrake while at traffic light's it would hasve a lasw number set by parliament so if your summons to court they will say what law number you have broken
