Uncomfortable bed in new caravan
Hi,
Just brought a brand new elldis kensington with transverse bed which has a OZIO mattress.
This is the most incomfortable mattress we have ever slept on!!!! Just wondered if anyone else has felt the same regarding these mattresses?
Dealer says has had no other complaints but find that very hard to believe

Matresses are very much a personal choice - everyone likes a different firmness and style.
That's why bed shops have 10+ different options to chose from. So its totally reasonable to expect some people not to like what they get when your van comes with "one" choice
I doubt they will do anything about it - so a topper is a possible option.
I have one, its excellent. About £140 for a double-size one. I had a cheaper one before, but it was twice the thickness and half the weight - so as you might expect, it didn't last long.0 -
When we bought our Autotrail Cheyenne the mattress was in need of replacement. It is an island bed with a hinge in the middle of the mattress. I rang Duvalay and the woman told me that Duvalay mattress would be the same shape as the original. I ordered the mattress and it came in two separate peices meaning when we slept on it it parted. We rang Duvalay and complained that their mattress was not exactly the same. We then had to return the mattress to Duvalay at our expense and pay £125 for them to stitch it together and resend. The mattress still parts in the middle and Duvalay have gone quiet and refuse tro respond to emails.....As we spend approx 10 months a year in our motorhome we need a good mattress. My advice would be don't assume your new mattress will be as the original one, ask the questions..

We find most mattresses to firm for us so always have a memory foam topper on them, a good 2" one should solve the problem if the matress is too firm, however if its to soft for you them a topper IMO wouldn't make any differnce. You can of course replace
the mattress but do be careful about weight, some non caravan matresses are much heavier.0 -

many Continental vans now have multi zone cold foam mattresses which (i guess) are like having an extremely thick 'topper' type mattress all the way through.
our mattresses (set on sprung fittings) are only about 6" deep but are far more comfortable than the 'proper' mattress we had in our Bolero.
if adding a topper moves the comfort of your normal mattress towards what we have, then add one.....

We even offered to take it back to Duvalay for inspection at our own cost, but they were not interested!

Hurts though when its a brand new caravan but research shows a lot of makes use the same mattress on new models coachman, eldis and a few others. Must be cheap

Duvalay will continue to ignore as they know they will get away with it as the mattress is custom made which makes a court case more difficult! How do you prove that the mattress is uncomfortable? Those were the first obstacles we came across. Now we
can only advise not to deal with the company in question as a court case could be time consuming and expensive.We still have proof of all the communication sent to Duvalay regarding our mattress, but at the moment cannot do much about it! I gather that the CC legal team cannot help either?

You can have a made to measure mattress (even for an island bed) made by other companies, and they don't always cost an arm and a leg. You can choose the thickness of the foam (and probably visit and test it out first). See here for one such company, but

I suggest you do go down the small claims route but send the company a 'letter before action' with a deadline for response.Good luck

John Ryan Beds. They will make specific mattresses for caravans/motor homes. The site has lots of information about various beds and their construction (I didn't know bed construction was so complicated) and FAQs some of which may help you should you have
the need to go down the court route. They will also answer any questions you may have. I bought a bed from them, one word 'fantastic'.0 -

We have just bout a new swift and have a duvalay mattress I gave to say it's not the most comfortable
can anyone recommend a good quality topper, willing to pay for quality
Sleeping on a Duvalay mattress is like sleeping on a concrete floor with a 1" foam in between. When looking for a topper, go for one that has a high density as it will offer more support than a low density topper.

As per the bed, I apologise as there was supposed to be a smiley after the comment as I was inferring that your bed at home must be very uncomfortable if you consider a Duvalay mattress comfortable!
