Hi,

Just brought a brand new elldis kensington with transverse bed which has a OZIO mattress.

This is the most incomfortable mattress we have ever slept on!!!! Just wondered if anyone else has felt the same regarding these mattresses?

Dealer says has had no other complaints but find that very hard to believe

Many thanks

No experience of them, but would mattress toppers help?  We don't have them as our mattress is fine, but friends whose mattress was also not that comfortable swear by the mattress toppers.

Matresses are very much a personal choice - everyone likes a different firmness and style.

That's why bed shops have 10+ different options to chose from.  So its totally reasonable to expect some people not to like what they get when your van comes with "one" choice :)

I doubt they will do anything about it - so a topper is a possible option.

I have one, its excellent.  About £140 for a double-size one.  I had a cheaper one before, but it was twice the thickness and half the weight - so as you might expect, it didn't last long.

When we bought our Autotrail Cheyenne the mattress was in need of replacement. It is an island bed with a hinge in the middle of the mattress. I rang Duvalay and the woman told me that Duvalay mattress would be the same shape as the original. I ordered the mattress and it came in two separate peices meaning when we slept on it it parted. We rang Duvalay and complained that their mattress was not exactly the same. We then had to return the mattress to Duvalay at our expense and pay £125 for them to stitch it together and resend. The mattress still parts in the middle and Duvalay have gone quiet and refuse tro respond to emails.....As we spend approx 10 months a year in our motorhome we need a good mattress. My advice would be don't assume your new mattress will be as the original one, ask the questions..

We have a Ozio mattress in our Mistral & find it perfectly comfortable. We used a mattress topper in our previous Unicorn Valencia, which we did find too firm. As Petertr says it's very much a personal choice.

We find most mattresses to firm for us so always have a memory foam topper on them, a good 2" one should solve the problem if the matress is too firm, however if its to soft for you them a topper IMO wouldn't make any differnce. You can of course replace
the mattress but do be careful about weight, some non caravan matresses are much heavier.

Another vote for a Topper. We got a memory foam one from Dunelm Mill and it changed the bed uncomfortably hard to just about perfect (for us).

Another vote for Dunelm topper but as someone else said if yours is too soft already that won't help.  Hope you get it right!

many Continental vans now have multi zone cold foam mattresses which (i guess) are like having an extremely thick 'topper' type mattress all the way through.

our mattresses (set on sprung fittings) are only about 6" deep but are far more comfortable than the 'proper' mattress we had in our Bolero.

if adding a topper moves the comfort of your normal mattress towards what we have, then add one.....Happy

And I thought we were the only ones with issues with Duvalay CS.  Our mattress set us back £500+ and we still have to have a topper.

We even offered to take it back to Duvalay for inspection at our own cost, but they were not interested!

By the way, where do people store their toppers once the bed is put back to seats?

I have mine strapped in a roll - so it won't go under the seats.  The shower seems the only option.  Or maybe the back of the car - which is inconvenient...

I would suggest that the product is not as described and they are in breach of the Sale of Goods Act. If they will not take any action to rectify a small claims summons should be the answer.

Duvalay will continue to ignore as they know they will get away with it as the mattress is custom made which makes a court case more difficult!  How do you prove that the mattress is uncomfortable?  Those were the first obstacles we came across.  Now we
can only advise not to deal with the company in question as a court case could be time consuming and expensive.

We still have proof of all the communication sent to Duvalay regarding our mattress, but at the moment cannot do much about it!  I gather that the CC legal team cannot help either?

We spent £700 and had to return it once at our cost and then £100 having it stitched together then pay £25 for delivering it. The mattress splits apart in the middle. I make comments on the facebook page which they duly delete... Would not use or recommend
them and funny enough as a CC warden I get asked alot of questions regarding all aspects of M/H or caravans and I duly spread the word with regard to duvalay

You can have a made to measure mattress (even for an island bed) made by other companies, and they don't always cost an arm and a leg.  You can choose the thickness of the foam (and probably visit and test it out first).  See here for one such company, but
there are plenty of others:  Made to measure caravan mattress

Mark - although your mattress was custom made for you it should still be fit for purpose etc. A mattress that splits apart in the middle sounds as though it is faulty and should be easy to demonstrate, whereas an uncomfortable mattress is more subjective.
I suggest you do go down the small claims route but send the company a 'letter before action'  with a deadline for response.

    Good luck

Have a look at this website,
    John Ryan Beds
. They will make specific mattresses for caravans/motor homes. The site has lots of information about various beds and their construction (I didn't know bed construction was so complicated) and FAQs some of which may help you should you have
the need to go down the court route. They will also answer any questions you may have. I bought a bed from them, one word 'fantastic'.

Top tip - If you get a standard size matress topper, then fitted sheets will fit - and you can roll it all up and put it away (shower enclosure!).

Otherwise, caravan beds might not be the right size - as ours arent.

Sleeping on a Duvalay mattress is like sleeping on a concrete floor with a 1" foam in between.  When looking for a topper, go for one that has a high density as it will offer more support than a low density topper.

The last two replies state how fantastic the Duvalay mattress is which makes me wonder why their beds are so uncomfortable at home?

The are numerous threads on different forums on how uncomfortable the Duvalay mattress is and wondering why caravan manufacturers have chosen Duvalay.  The after sales service is totally rubbish and I still have emails to prove this!

Where did I say my bed at home was uncomfortable? What does the bed at home have to do with the very comfortable Duvalay mattress in our Sterling Continental 570?

Internet forum reviews are a good source of info, but invariably people post negatives than positives on them. Or post only when they have a problem, and often don't update the outcome.

Did you get sorted for Norn Hill on your return as your thread

    'Unable to make a booking?'

in the UK Sites & Touring section, earlier in the week?

In case you missed it I thanked the staff member for sorting out the issue regarding the booking.

As per the bed, I apologise as there was supposed to be a smiley after the comment as I was inferring that your bed at home must be very uncomfortable if you consider a Duvalay mattress comfortable!
