Thanks for posting this up - but I see it does not include the Peripherique. To be honest driving in to central Paris is to be avoided if possible- much better to go in on the metro or RER.

As I follow up, I took a look at how to register - currently not available to non-French vehicles although they will have an on-line facility  to enable registration from January 2017.

I understand that it comes into effect from March.

Perhaps they will produce an English language application by then.....perhaps not!SurprisedSmile

PS It's suggested that other cities will follow soon!

It seems it's a really serious problem, looks like some of the cities in China!

The sticker is now in use in two Cities....this is the best English explanation I have found:-

    Click for Emissions details

PS I appreciate that some (very many) don't venture into cities but oddly enough some do so this may save a large fine!

Thanks for posting. It is too easy to be caught out by these sort of things and with on the spot fines difficult to wriggle out of.

Isn't there an exemption for holders of a BB?  If so, unless you display the BB how will they know that the vehicle is in that tax bracket?

This is the official French Government site. It seems that cars with Euro 5/6 engines should qualify for a category 1 (purple) sticker. (best to open in Chrome and use the translate option) However it looks as if on Euro 6 engines in the likes of Motorhome would qualify for category 1 sticker and euro 5 engines would be category 2 (yellow sticker). We might have to wait for clarification on how they treat motorhomes, my comments above are based on what standard vans would be so its likely to be the same. They hope to have a web page for non French vehicles open on the 1st February. We will also have to have confirmed which vehicle categories will be allowed in which cities. If it follows the model of Germany its possible that only the lower (in number) categories will be allowed but again we will need that to be confirmed.

Looking at the towns thinking about introducing the scheme seems to suggest that they will have the principal tourist routes well covered to catch any unsuspecting Brits. frown

    Hello everyone,

My name is Thomas and i'm the new Hazel (Travel Information Service Officer) we've had a lot of enquiries today regarding this new Low Emissions Sticker. Just to confirm currently the Vignette is enforce in the cities of Grenoble, Lyon and Paris.

In Paris you will only need to purchase a vignette from the Crit Air website if you are travelling into the centre of Paris from the Boulevard Périphérique. For Grenoble and Lyon again you will only need to purchase a vignette when driving in the centre of these cities. Currently there are plans to introduce more cities and we will continue to monitor these and will update our website and Travel Advice pages as they are announced.

I believe also that older vehicles are to be banned from central Paris during certain hours. As I’ll not be driving through central Paris I didn’t look for details.  Once was enough. Not sure but Info may have been from our Government website .

It's the autoroutes going straight through the middle of Lyon and Grenoble where it looks as though I shall need one.

I think he means Blue Badge scheme. Couldn't see any mention of it on the official French website but that doesn't mean special rules don't apply. It is a very new scheme so perhaps not all details have filtered out yet.

Do you have to purchase one for each city or can you buy one from the Government covering all the cities that need one?

Talked with BinL who lives in Orange, and apparently they introduced it in Lyon on the 12th December. However, he says when he went through on the Autoroute in January there were no signs mentioning you needed a sticker, so may just be the town.

    Hi,

l have quickly scanned the article.

We will be driving through Lyon in August which appears one of the three cities involved.

Thank you for flagging this up, l am sure l am not the only person reading this who could have been caught out by a heavy fine!

    Regards,

    Murdy.

    Ah,

That's what you get for scanning!

So you only need it if you driving around city centre streets 🙄I should have read it more carefully!!

The details for Grenoble, where the motorway also runs straight through the city, very clearly say that these vignette stickers definitely WILL be required for all traffic passing through.

Does that apply if you stay on the A480 which runs along the river, or just if you are changing from A480 to A41 which involves a lengthy stretch of motorway quality N road.

It is going to get very confusing, especially if you need a different sticker for each town. BinL says Avignon is considering it, so there are probably lots thinking of following suit.

The details from Crit'Air.fr say that for the entire Grenoble area the requirement for a vignette will include all the motorways within the area from the peage at Voreppe on the A48 on the north, to the peage at Crozet/Vif on the A51, and the peage at Crolles on the A41 on the west - and including the A 480 through the city.

I gather this is causing some consternation in France and may yet be modified.
