Short term parking in France

We are planning to go to St Malo next year via the ferry and driving on to the site a few miles away.  Unfortunately, after we get off the ferry at 9:00, we have to "kill" 3 hours as we can't get on our pitch until 13:00.  We will be travelling on the D137
and E40 but the problem is we have a landrover towing a Conqueror 650 so I am worried that it may not be possibe to find somewhere to park-up until we can get on site.

Does anyone have knowledge of this route and whether there are service stations or other facilities on the route that can take a large outfit?

Thanks

Which site are you heading for? Most French sites aren't that particular about arrival times.

We are going to Domaine des Ormes. I have contacted them and they say they only have parking for 2  cars and caravans. I really don't want to turn up on the off chance with such a large outfit only to be turned away. I would rather park up and have a cuppa?

If you have the ViaMichelin ap. you can select parking places and petrol stations. Any on a major road should have adequate space for your outfit. Agree however that most French sites don't have silly UK rules about arrival times. Actually, it's often a good strategy to arrive early; you will get the best choice of pitches although don't arrive at lunchtime, it's France after all!

I am going to qualify the above by saying that we never booked, even in August, so I am not familiar with reserved pitches and fixed arrival times so I could be talking rubbish.

Try the big Carrefour hypermarket at La Madeleine commercial centre at St Malo just off the D137, drive around and look for a big space at the farthest edge. Stock up with tood and drink.

If that fails just turn up at the camp site,  go to the office, smile say Bonjour and shake hands, and if you are blocking the entrance they will let you in. It's not like a CC site.

I have been looking at viaMichelin on the web but can't see how to get the necessary detail.  I'll load it onto my phone and see how it goes.

    Thanks

We went to Domaine des Ormes - arriving in Caen on the night ferry, but the security staff on the gate took us to a fairly large temporary parking area inside the site, where we could hook-up and find our allocated pitch the following mornng.  Are you sure
this area wouldn't be available to you if you arrived early?

I don't think we've ever arrived on a site in France which had arrival times - were you actually told not to arrive until after 1.00 pm?

I queried this specifically with the site and they said that the pitch was available from 13:00 and that there was limited parking for two vehicles at reception. I guess this will end up being pot luck as to whether I find somewhere to park before arriving
or having to arrive early and see what happens.

    Thanks

Plan C. Go to Mont St Michel on day 1 - it's about 30 miles from St Malo ferry port. Park the car/ caravan with the motorhomes in the huge parking area there, take the shuttle bus to the island, and hike up the hill, and afterwards go to your campsite in the afternoon or evening.

Nice idea with one flaw.  We are meeting relations in France and have planned a day to Mont St Michel later in the week Happy.

    Cheers

What time of year are you going?

When we go (usually May or September) they would welcome you at any time that the office is open.

That's encouraging.  We are going at the end of May.

That's the problem solved then.  Just go to the site.

We usually holiday in May, and it's rare to find a site more than 40% full, never mind queueing at the door to get in!

I suggest you stop worrying and just arrive when it's convenent for you!
