Short Seasons

i guess it must be economics, David, some sites here (including club ones) shut if they dont feel theyll get the footfall...
of course, there are exceptions and there are still plenty of open all year sites here, but overseas they seem to close a long time before you and I would see as the end of the season.
obviously, for MHers there are plenty of aires to supplement those sites which remain open, but if you need to find a campsite, the end of Sept looms large in the calendar, i guess..

We had a similar situation last year in the South of France. The site we were on was about a third full and we would have been happy to have stayed on a few more days. Talking to the young lady on reception she said it was difficult in France because of
employment law I got the impression that there was a limit for how long people could work on a temporary basis and she was off home to another part of France.David

I think the economics are a bit like restaurants on some Greek Islands. They open for two months of the year when they make all of their money. I think if you were able to see the books you might find that the staff overhead costs - reception, cleaners, maintenance, gardeners etc. - plus any other general season specific overheads might push the site into a loss. Every site must have a break-even occupancy.
